so i live in israel and our comics reading comunity even thou awsome (we won this years eisner award) is very small
so recently a guy i never heard about before created an event on the bigest stores wall (wich is prety much the page of the entire comunity) called "read comic book in public day" this is suposed to be a day when everyone read comics on the street and take a picture probably to make it a "loud and proud" thing but it was very confusing to me... you see i always read comics in public on the bus on the bus station in the park (when waiting for the buss XP) and in school why is that suposed to be a spacial thing? why should it usualy not be a thing to e ashamed of?!
what about you? are you ashamed of your hobies? (gaming comics etc)

EDIT: just to make sure were all on the same page aperatly this is a international thing... 2nd year this goes on so it has nothing to do with the fact that im from israel

EDIT 2: just to make sure everyone understands i am not ashamed of any of my geeky hobbies i love comics i play video games and D&D almost every week and im proud of that! the thread is about how rediciolous and pointless this day is... (just making sure after reading some commets...)

Was this yesterday? Cause I saw a woman reading a manga book on the train and it seemed out of place for some reason.

I'm not ashamed of my hobbies, no, but I tend not to do them in public for different reasons. My DSi, for example, never leaves the house because I don't trust the general public or Mother Nature with its safety. I only trust myself with that.
[sub]And I don't even trust myself that much[/sub].

But ashamed? Hell no.

I am kinda ashamed for gaming (because the white skinny geek with glasses stereotypes fit as well).

If it was up to me, I would do sports instead of gaming. But gaming is so much fun. And I am good at it, so I just enjoy it way more.

I don't see why I should be so ashamed of my hobbies that I should hide them from the public, but I keep getting weird looks when I challenge people to naked interpretive dance battles in the streets.

Seriously, though, no. I don't see why I should. Though I do get a lot of weird looks whenever I play my DS on the bus. Actually, I suppose I am a teeny tiny bit ashamed of playing my DS in public... but that's related entirely to the fact that it's pink.

Eh, I avoid reading my manga in public due to the stigma on it. While it may in fact attract the attention of the kind of girl I want, I don't want to be known as "that guy" and lose all chance of getting into a relationship. On the other side of things, I do watch Adventure Time and My Little Pony on my laptop in public so I guess it wouldn't matter much if I did.

Damn, I must be getting old because in my days, people used to choose their pastime activities themselves.
Must be a 21st century thing, I suppose.

I am a tad ashamed nerdy tendencies, for lack of a better analogy, I treat them like porn. I only entertain (or rather they only entertain me) when I know I'm alone, I close all my tabs with it when I feel someone is around, I get defensive when someone I entertain the idea of being entertained by it.

Basically, what I'm trying to say is, I love being a nerd and I am proud of it, when I no one is looking.

I'm not embarrassed. I will read anything and play my handheld systems in public, I really don't care about what random passerby think. This includes discussing MLP or any other "kiddie" shows in public. If someone brings it up, I just give them this look:

I really don't see why reading anything in public has any kind of social stigma, I mean what business is it of theirs to judge someones reading habits? I don't read comics, but I've read magazines and books before on planes, trains and busses without many people staring. Maybe it's just where you live or something.

Comic books in America have a history of being for the shut in crowd, the ones who are obsessed with comic books and follow continuity as closely as possible. If someone sees you reading a really obscure comic book, your labeled as a nerd. Its really a matter of how much you care about your image.

Again this is just an American's viewpoint, I can't speak for anywhere else

I wouldn't give a fuck really. But sadly, there are very little comic books here in Bulgaria, so I rarely have the chance to read any.

I can't say I'm ashamed of my hobbies. I routinely bring my PSP and/or DS with me damn near everywhere, often with an unusual import game as well.
If I don't have the games, then I bring a volume of manga or a comic book.

If I don't have THAT, then I just bring a few d20's with me and start talking with a nerdy lisp and see how quickly I can secure elbow room wherever I'm at. You could say that that's a hobby all by itself!

I don't see any reason to be ashamed of a hobby. If you enjoy it, don't be ashamed of it. That's not to say you need to rub it someone's face, but don't have shame in liking what you do.

Reading comics in day light isn't a bad thing. I think this guy is blowing this event a bit out of proportion, though.

Of course, it also is in the subject about what TYPE of graphic Novel you read, If someones sees me reading Manga, I will be snarked. If they see Scott Pilgrim, they'll say "Nerd, that's not japanese, a hur derp." If they see comic books, they'll... hmm, have not tried that one yet.

Anyway, That's neither here not there. It's still reading, that's what counts. Right?

the only reason people are ashamed of their hobbies is because they've been conditioned that way. People who think people shouldn't enjoy "nerdy" things can go to hell.
