As much as I'd love to have one of these, I'd be way to scared to own one. I'd be afraid of fucking something up, which I most definitely would do.
It's not like it's any more dangerous are easier to get then an actual gun.Sonicron said:Distribution of this item to the general public as well as possession of one without a special weapons permit or industrial-grade license needs to be made punishable with prison time. People who say they want this as a Star Wars toy or any other ridiculous reason should get an immediate reality check... this thing is not a toy. The existence of this thing is bad enough already, but the low price is the cyanide icing on the cake.
I am fucking scared by this news, let me make that perfectly clear. Instant and permanent loss of eyesight. Infliction of high-grade burns. Highly likely formation of cancerous tissue.
People, wake the fuck up. This is anything but awesome. This is terrible, and I am severely frightened at the prospect of the things that could happen if this item were to fall into the hands of irresponsible dickwads or, God forbid, a person with truly murderous intent.
Maybe where you live, I don't know the firearms laws in Canada... in many, many countries of the world - mine included - your statement is simply not true.Levitas1234 said:It's not like it's any more dangerous are easier to get then an actual gun.
Yes, for that most part I am wrong. I looked it up, there are lasers double the price that can hurt you. They are 1 Watt blue lasers that produce a lot of heat with in it's beam. However, like we both say, the laser is mostly fake. It is real, but not as dangerous as it was advertised. You could badly hurt someone but, you could not kill them. It is a lot less dangerous but still holds dangerous non the less.Insomniac55 said:I don't think it is fake. Exaggerated, perhaps, but a 1 watt laser is well within the limits of today's technology. Think about it. 1 watt is not much energy, it is the nature of the concentrated and highly directional light emitted from a laser which makes it dangerous. This laser will not kill you. It will not blast a hole straight through you. It won't instantly set you on fire from miles away.lonercs said:-SNIP
What it will do is give you instant, permanent eye damage from any direct exposure at close-ish range (I don't know the beam divergence so it's impossible to tell if this range will be 20 meters or 200). From close range it will cause small burns with ease.
Voltage has nothing to do with it. If your power supply can provide enough currant, you can turn 3v into 3 million volts with the right circuitry. Modern AA batteries (in particular, rechargable NIMH cells) can easily supply 1 amp for a bit under two hours, and (depending on the particular cell) are able to supply MUCH more in shorter bursts.
I've got a couple of LED flashlights which drive a Cree LED at about 3 watts or so, and these run off 2 AA cells. You don't need to give a laser much actual power for it to become rather dangerous.
