Go play Arma II. When you get back then you are allowed to whine about realism in games.
Played the demo. It was absolutely dreadful.

I know that there are few games that can claim to be realistic - the oh-so-often-mentioned-in-this-thread ArmA II, for example. I don't play them, because that's not my kind of game - but i cannot really hate them. I do, however hate visual and thematic realism that plagues the gaming industry. People should probably start distinguishing between realistic gameplay and realistic graphics/themes, but i digress.

If asked politely, i could probably write a ten-page essay on why i hate brown-camouflaged US marines[sup]TM[/sup] capturing unidentified brown Middle-Eastern locales[sup]TM[/sup] and shooting at brown-camouflaged Arabic terrorists[sup]TM[/sup] backed by ZOMG EVIL RUSSIANS![sup]TM[/sup] and why i would rather play a game about gas-masked catlike repairman from the galaxy far far away saving the universe by means of killing a lot of baddies with a gun that shoots shurikens and lightning.

I don't get the whole realism thing as a selling point. I play games to escape reality, not embrace it. If I wanted realism I wouldn't be playing a game.

Some people really REAAAAAALLY like their games to be graphically superior to others. They get off on it.
I don't understand it, myself, but I've come across enough of them in my time that I've learned to just roll my eyes and move on.
I think this is kinda missing the point. Realism does not refer to just good graphics that look "real". Or, ar least it shouldn't. Looking real is just a part of it.

Plus, i think something else people are forgetting is that realism is not just for FPSs. There are other genres out there that can be realistic: simulators (they generally have to be, because they woudn't be simulators otherwise), strategy games and tactics games (anyone still remember the Close Combat series?), etc.

Also, i understand that some people play games for the escapism (heh) they provide, but not all of us do. So don't go shouting realistic games should go die. Some of us like them, and nobody is forcing you to play them. Just go play whatever you like, and leave realistic games for people who like those sort of games.

You'd rather realistic "2 bullets and you die" type games? Does anyone actually enjoy those?

Depends. MW2's "realism" can just go away. Proper realism can add a whole new challenge.

::NEWSFLASH::

MARKETING DIVISIONS USE BUZZ WORDS THAT ARE NOT ENTIRELY INDICATIVE OF THE ACTUAL PRODUCT.

PLEASE ALSO NOTE THAT YOU'RE NOT WORTH IT JUST BECAUSE YOU USE L'OREAL, AND IT IS POSSIBLE THAT GILLETTE IS NOT THE VERY BEST A MAN CAN GET.

"Realism" took the fun out of GTA IV

If I wanted people bodies to roll realisticly over my car, I'd hit them IRL!

Pretty much what he said. I don't play simulation games myself - I don't have the skill, the will or the time to make the effort, and I generally prefer other kinds of games - but I have a good friend that finds it fun to observe an enemy pratrol from a shrubbery somewhere for 45 minutes before launching an attack against it in ARMA.

It's not my thing, but if people like it then it's not my problem either. If you don't like what a certain game does, play something else - the fact that it's on the market probably means that a group of people like it and they don't need to be told how their games suck.

Talking about pseudo-realistic games like Call of Duty and it's ilk, "realistic" have come to mean "better looking graphics" as far as I can see. It's just a matter of reading "realistic" like "nice visuals" and accept the wrong usage of the word as another ugly little cottage in Market Department-town.
