A more realistic FPS is wot they're trying to do, but some of them are just rubbish and start to get reli samey, but some are awesome - CoD4 was pretty realistic, in it's own way. However more realistic games can be awful, like the early Burnout games - but when they introduced the massive crashes and it was awesome.

I really want a good realistic FPS, but that would have to mean to would be easy to be killed and therefore less enemies and it would be reli easy
I agree. Burnout is easily my favorite racing title and the only one I can stomache. The only thing that would make it more awesome is pedestrians and people in the cars. Sorry, but I am a sadistic fuck.

Crash Mode with and my best friend = Families of five returning from Disney Land being crushed in a twenty car pile-up.

Atleast I won't have to fill in the blanks (though that is some of the fun of it).

And I totally agree with Bakery's premise. That would be awesome.

Oh, and you want hyper-violent realism... play Soldier of Fortune on the PC. I don't know how accurate the damage physics are, but I do recall blowing a man's legs off, and him screaming still alive....

So I shot his arms off... God I was a messed up kid.

Ya know, I've always wanted some kind of masochisticly realistic game, I mean, hey if I can't die in the real world then in my eyes it's still 'escapism'.

Still I think putting so much attention to detail actually is too much to ask for nowadays - what with development times and development costs and..demographic issues, and this "make or break" things devs have to worry about..and the costs..and costs...and..costs...
To once again pull a game off of my list:
Operation Flashpoint 2
http://www.codemasters.com/flashpoint2/
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Operation_Flashpoint_2:_Dragon_Rising

To pull a quote from PC Gamer:
"The ludicrous attention to detail presses hard on the 3d artists that make up the majority of the Flashpoint team; each with their own specialist roles. One artist has been tasked to building trees--leaf by leaf. Codemasters experimented with software to autogenerate their foliage, but they couldn't get the results they wanted.
Some artists spend their days equipping and texturing the soldiers. A soldier's kit has to be accurate: they work from acres of current photography and film footage. When the US. Army changed their camouflage pattern to a slightly more pixelated version, the artists just sucked it up and redid their infantry."
PC Gamer - September 2008 - Page 58 Emphasis added by me

The few teams out there willing to actually invest in a hardcore military sim game are almost universally dedicated to crafting the best product they can, and for good reason. Well done sims are rare these days, and when they do come out the sim crowd just eats them up.
For anyone that is interested in getting into simming, you're definitely getting into a great hobby, because it really does break away from what is traditionally viewed as "gaming." The sim crowds are packed with helpful, mature folks (though they can get kinda batshit insane) and as long as you conduct yourself well, you'll find yourself getting involved in a great community.

http://www.simhq.com/ is a great launchpoint for anyone interested.

At the moment ARMA: Armed Assault is probably the most indepth military sim game on the market, and is just insanely fun. I highly recommend everyone looking for a more indepth/realistic game, and for a break from the "omg lol I pwned u" crowd, check it out. The demo available on the website has actually got a lot of content in it so you'll get a good idea if it's something you'll be interested in.

Well good sir, may I introduce you to the wonderful world of Ghost Recon 1 (don't even bother with GWAR 1/2, those were arcade style travesties upon the Ghost Recon name), Operation Flashpoint, ARMA: Armed Assault, and the upcoming Operation Flashpoint 2 (which is is definitely shaping up to be the greatest combat simulator ever made).
Enough said.
Operation Flashpoint was one of the best and most realistic games I played. (My opinion) I loved how you could break your legs and the one hit kills. (Ok, so I know those things sound bad but you wanted a realistic game) I also loved the multiplayer maps and the verity of vehicles (ground, air, sea) you had access to as well as the fact that you could create enemies or alies and create there covoy or patrol routes. It made for some intresting gameplay. It's a little dated now however so you might want to wait for OF2.

When I shoot someone in the balls, I don't want them to just grab their groin and collapse, I want them to SCREAM with sheer anguish and unbridled pain.
See, me and this guy see eye to eye.

And when I hit a guy with a rocket launcher, I don't want them to just get blown away... I want them to turn into a pile of dude-soup on the floor. Who's with me?

You know, that reminds me, Operation Flashpoint should have been a candidate for scariest game (will update). The sneaking about, praying not to be seen and then blammo...that was great. I love all 3 versions (at least that I have) dearly and I only ever did beat it as the Russians (shrug). I'm permanently stuck on the last level of OFP original and forget resistance. Can't wait for OFP 2 and to try to get my hands on ArmA.

If the game was actually realistic, the AI was as smart as you and had the same health as you, then it would be impossible. You might be able to kill three guys, four if you're lucky, because your enemies would be your equal in nearly every way.
Real funny you should say that as the exact same thing happened when they first demoed STALKER Clear Sky. No one not even the developers were able to kill more than three of the four bandits in the demo.
I know, right. In the first STALKER, especially on the harder difficulty settings, you would have to face groups of 8 or 9 enemies, and they would just demolish you. You could kill one, maybe two, before they came up and trounced you. I think that was due more to a problem with some of the game mechanics than to the fairly good AI, but I'm not sure that that a game with that kind of difficulty is what we really want. It's just not as much fun.

And they respawned whenever you left the area. That was stupid.

Psh, Thief 3, the Shalebridge Cradle, on the hardest difficulty setting, without holy water, in the middle of the night is the scariest part of any game ever.

No, not just the scariest game. The scariest thing ever.

More realistic a game is. Less of a game it is.
It completely depends on your definition of a game. Which depends on what is fun to you.
So it's really a matter of personal opinion.
I would like to have a really realistic game. Like if you are in a city full of terrorists and you go around blowing things up they will hear you. And if a .50 sniper calibre ammunition hits you you are dead.
Maybe you like shooting around, and not be killed in one shoot because you will have to do it all over again.
But I like to think before I get out of a bush when there are 20 angry communists waiting for me to come out.
And it's really cool because if maybe you died like 100 times when you finally do it, you can torture the guy and you say: man it really was worth playing a realistic game.

Although maybe it's me but some hiper-realistic games would suck. Imagine an hiper-realistic sims. Mh... maybe... it would be cool...
The truth is i would love to play any hiper-realistic game just to try them and to see what's like.

I don't know because I've never played a lot of realistic games. Only realistic fps. And in my experience the more realistic the better.

What is your base in saying that the more realistic a game is the less of a game it is?
I mean what games are so realistic that they can't be enjoyed as games?

Red orchestra: Ostfront 41-45

now there is a game in which you need three people well used to the controls to operate a tank, close to one shot kills, inability to run over long distances, guns flying out of your hands, guns overheating if use too much. no HUD, no crosshairs, shellshock effects. but whats important is its still fun to play.

a pity the AI is crap. just play with other people fix's this though

thats what realism needs to be in games. if you take realism to far it does become detremental to the game itself.

again there will always be games within all genres that will be against realsim. e.g curse of monkey island and HALO that are still fun to play even though you can sit back and go "that is ridickulous" so IMO realism should be paid close attention to should be thrown out the window. no 50/50 stuff

A realistic war game in which you die in one shot and are penalized for firing a fucking 50 cal sniper rifle STANDING UP AND RUNNING would be an awesome online experience.
