Don't want to donate to Yahtzee? Don't. Case closed. Move along.

Not sure why you posted a link to some jealous youtube guy.
It's him probably lol. I dunno.

The way i see it is this is a scam. They are trying to scam money out of people for something that isn't even close to a necessity. If it works then they will continue to try this for sillier and sillier things. I couldn't care less if Yahtzee comes across the ocean. I'm not gonna see him and even if i were going to see him it's not worth donating money to. Sure i like his videos but not that much.
Just to let you all know, the video is correct about one thing: every "product" up to the $100 range is just a poster. You gonna spend 75 bucks on a poster?

5,000 dollars is probably a month or two's wages for most people (at least.) Did you work for a month or two to pay some guy twice ('cause the escapist pays him every week regardless) to make a 4-5 minute review about some game? And if I was an indie developer, why would I want Yahtzee to review my game? If he gives it a bad score and sales go down, what can I do? I spent 5 grand for some internet guy to whiz in my face. Nice going, me. Sure, he might like it. Yahtzee has really built his reputation as a guy who loves praising video games. :)
Oh good. Somebody who actually understands what I'm talking about. :)

I'm sure he would just laugh at you for thinking that sending Yahtzee overseas is worth $15,000. :)

Yahtzee is the only reason I check onto the Escapist everyday. I'm sure some of his more hardcore fans will donate - while the hell not? They're putting the option out there to save money! Why the hell not if people are willing?

I dont normally say things like this but, yeah, that guy on the video? He's an enormous ****.
Anyhow, getting Yahtzee to review your game isnt just for giggles, its a chance to get your shit put on the map. If anything, thats alot less than most advertising, and twice as effective. If you dont like his videos, which I could understand, brother, then dont donate. Its not like theyre forcing you, ya know? Other people happen to fans of his work and would love to get a chance to meet the man behind the show.

Aswell, lets not forget that this guy live on the other side of the goddamn world, shall we?
Overall, I think its just cause to donate a few extra bucks if youre into Yahtzee and PAX. If you dont think so, Youre entitled to your opinion, but other people do, and will donate, so the argument is moot.

haha, Just sayin, brother, the man has a loyal and loving fanbase.
Yes, but I could've got him to review a game for free, just by getting a bunch of my friends to nag him to review it. Yahtzee or not. I still wouldn't pay $5,000 for my game to be advertised, especially if I'm an indie developer. It just seems a little steep to me.

The way I like to look at all this is;

Is anyone forcing you to donate any money? No.

For the record, I did donate money for both this and Alison.

You know what they say about publicity right?

I think people should do what they want with their money and have shit fits thrown about it

Call me a callous asshole, but I thought the Alison thing was pretty stupid too. Sure I love EC and her work as much as any other fan, but I swear some one said that EC wasn't likely to continue without her. I don't see how that makes any sense if Erin and all those other upcoming artists are just as capable of producing a visually appealing show. It was even more a slap in the face to me to see that James is going to be profiting off of everyone's generosity by starting a publishing company with the extra money. I guess in the end it's all fair because I don't mind them being rewarded for their talented internet fame, but something about it just seemed like underhanded dealing to a bunch of sheep.
Well, as it was stated on the donation page. Part of the money raised was to hire the artists you're seeing. And I'm not exactly sure what he'd do with the extra money. The profit was already made. He could've donated it to charity. I think that would've been pretty cool.

Or he could give back to the community who so generously donated, like he will be doing. And I think that's pretty cool, too. And even cooler is that we, the fans who donated, will have started something that seems to be a really amazing opportunity for a lot of people. In essence, we created a publisher that gives people like us a chance to make and distribute games. To me it doesn't seem like seeking to make a profit from a publishing company, so much as giving people a chance at doing things they care about.

And maybe it's just personal taste. But when someone leaves a production for one reason or another, it never seems the same. Whether it's an actor leaving a TV show or an artist leaving a web series. And if I and thousands of other people can donate only $1 to keep someone we love around and able to do the things she loves, not just for us, but for herself. I think that's pretty cool too.

And if you want to look at the material side of things, I do get some cool swag, just like from a store. But with a much greater impact.

OT: Doesn't bother me, really. Doesn't interest me, really. I won't be donating.

As soon as I saw the whole gimmick of getting Yahtzee to PAX, I immediately envisioned someone at the Escapist losing their mind of how quickly the community pulled together to help Alison from Extra Credits finance her recent surgery, leading to the slightly greedy thought of "I wonder if we can do that again..."

Yahtzee is great at what he does but it almost feels as though the Escapist is trying to take advantage of the somewhat cult following he's gathered over the years. Though I wouldn't place the blame solely on the corporate end of the Escapist, I'm sure the folks at PAX and perhaps Yahtzee himself had a hand in this event.

Except that situation was totally different.

People simply donated SO MUCH MORE than was actually needed, and James thought it best not to just toss the money into his bank account and call it a day. He invested the money in a publishing company to help contribute to the gaming industry. And I had thought he asked for the opinions of those who donated before he did it, too....and if that's true, what part of what he did was underhanded exactly?
See? That sounded pretty reasonable. :)

I'm sorry but I can't get over the fact that you guys are having people donate money to send Yahtzee to PAX. Who would do that!?! I have nothing against Yahtzee at all. I find some of his reviews to be kinda funny, but I don't like him enough to donate money JUST so he can fly first class to Seattle. Why can't the Escapist use THEIR money to fly him to PAX? Why do the fans need to donate money?

When Allison Theus needed a donation, it was for an important surgery in her shoulder. That was for a good cause!

And on top of this, you guys couldn't even come up with good prizes! Bungie gave out great prizes for their 20th anniversary and for a much cheaper and better price, and 100% of those profits went to charities. Can't we at least be rewarded better merchandise than a poster? Also, who would pay $5,000 for him to review their indie game? He's made reviews for games solely because so many people request for it. If I wanted him to review my game, I'd just need to make it a good game that people would enjoy, and if I had $5,000 to generously spare, then I'd probably have enough money to make a professional game.

Sorry, I think I might have gone off topic, there :/

Anyways, here's a second opinion:
http://youtu.be/HFgOlx3qi_s

Please reply with your own opinion on the matter as well, thank you. :)
you know what, i'm actually kinda with you on this. I don't live in washington, I will not be going to PAX. Nor will anyone I know. Now if they want to do it, that's their porogative, but if anyone else wants to. I mean I'd have to donate $50 in order to get a bloody poster sent to me. and it wouldn't even be signed. While it is a good idea, they went about it all wrong. But then the escapist isn't really well known for their sound decisions.

I agree that I personally wouldn't bother donating but they aren't forcing you to and if someone wants to give their money for that then they can do that.

Also don't make threads like this or you'll get banned :S (I made a thread telling people to stop telling others to get PubClub, it got several pages then I got banned. fair enough I suppose)
Oh really now?

That doesn't seem like a very rational decision. It will only make me, and several others, lose respect for the Escapist. Knowing how the internet works, however, it will probably happen. :/

This may sound like little more than an echo, but it's true. The guy isn't forcing anyone to do anything, you don't have to donate anything. That guy, what was his name? "Asalieri"? He's acting like this money has been stolen from someone. No, doesn't look that way at all, and quite frankly it's none of his damn business.

It already worked. *slowly turning to look at EC*
Obviously for Allison it had a much better cause for think of it from their point of view:
"They donated pretty much x10 times what they were asked for Allison, just imagine how much they will donate to Yahtzee!"

You know, there's already a news thread for you to discuss this. And there's no need to ***** about it...last I checked, asking for donations never harmed anyone.
