I have always felt that kids should be able to play any game their parents choose. However, if the kid then goes and kills someone, the parents are to be punished severely.

Hey, I've played the same games he does, except I started at age 13. Didn't hurt me in anyway. Okay, so I've gained a little weight, but I've jogged it off. Self-control is the key.

My parents let me play Command and Conquer games at age 8, I'm not that screwed up. I understand the desire to not expose males to that kind of violence though. Ultimately, if you can harness it towards exercise rather than more games, it is a very good thing.

Because of that I now need to post that I do not believe that video games cause any sort of violence. They are simply a symptom of the underlying issues. Not all people who enjoy violent video games are violent but I would hazard to guess that many violent people enjoy violent video games or other media.

Those sound like the kind of games i played when i was his age, and I turned out fine.
My parents were okay with it as long as I didn't develop violent tendancies which I didnt

I've seen too many situations like that to count. And yet, our society never learns... parents are never the problem. It's always the evil M-rated game that, somehow, their kid, got access to.

'course I was playing M-rated games since I was a wee lad. I got my first M-rated game when I was 13, my mother got it for me, Fable, I believe it was.

As long as the kid isn't going around shooting people because he saw it on Call of Duty, then I have no issue.

Hell, I was playing fucking Unreal Tournament when I was 6, so I grew up around that kind of shit.

The kid said his favorite games were shooters. Big deal. Fuck, lighten up for a bit.
yupp

doing mortal kombat fatalities..ohh..since i was about 5 or 6?

of course i mixed it up with mario and some ninja turtles and eventually pokemon..

but resident evil scared the pants off me as a kid. but was oh so much fun to play!

really i dont have a problem with this at all, like someone said, as long as the kid isnt a freakazoid who goes and shoots up a school, i have no problem with it, i know lots of kids who are MATURE (maturity does not equal age) enough to play the game without it affecting them in any possible way.

and all that crap about "aggressive games cause aggressive kids"

oh really?? pixels cause a kid aggression?

that kid was already well on his way to being mental in the head.

not all gamers are like this, in one bit, but the ones that are were well on there way before they started video games, and if they weren't, it was not CAUSED by video games in any sort of way

so you bet your ass my kids are going to be playing some damn good games, regardless of rating.

i know tons and tons of hick friends of mine who have shot and killed animals/wildlife when they were kids with real guns..and they've turned out okay, but apparently shooting pixels with a mouseclick/controller is going to cause massive aggressiveness in children..right...

I think I find the likelihood that his parents aren't very attentive to his play habits and aren't investing a great deal of time in their child is probably more disturbing than the games themselves.

(And yes, I know that's a supposition on my part, thus the term likelihood. But seriously: do you think the greater likelihood is that the kid's parents are being fully attentive and have decided to let him play based on a careful evaluation of the child's maturity?)

I was at EB once and there was a ten year old complaining that God of War 3 was a rip off and that he did not want to get it anymore. His Dad was justifying the price saying it is brand new and that he would pay for a bit of it.

.............

I am absolutely serious

The only questionable game on there I can see is Saints Row 2, but only because the character you play is so undeniably brutal, when compared to any of the GTA characters.

As someone who just started playing M rated games a year ago when I hit 17 I can definitely see the merits in telling a child to wait for the right time to play them. I'm quite honestly surprised by the amount of people that seem to believe it's ok for kids to be exposed to these levels of violence at such a young age. Maybe if we stopped waving it in their faces kids wouldn't be so desensitized to violence. That's just my two cents on the matter.

Ugh, I'm getting flashbacks from the thread I made about most irritating logical fallacies, one of 'em being correlation is not causation. I played GTA3 and the like at age 7-8, no supervision. Now I'm 15 (turning 16 in a few days) and I'm one of the calmest guys you'll see. And even if a kid plays violent videogames and goes around on a shooting spree (with a gun he got from... somewhere, seriously where do kids get those guns from?) that still doesn't mean the games did it, he was probably like that before he played them.

What obsession?

Over-reacting about some kid who said his favorite games were Modern Warfare, Gears of War, and Saint's Row? I could see that right now.

It's not like the kid came up to you and said, "HEY! I JUST GOT A FUCKING 100-KILL STREAK ON MW2, SO I'M GONNA GO SHOOT SOMETHING AT MAH DADDY'S!"

Besides, it's the parent's fucking child, so let them raise him however the hell they want.

If that kid can stand violence and his parents made sure he knew the line between video games and reality, and that killing is bad in real life and it's just a game made for fun, and he completely understands that, then let him play the games. I played violent video games when I was 6! However, my parents were a litle strict about SOME things. No games where you killed innocent civillians, no nudity, no sexual content, but the whole violence and blood and and gore thing didn't bother them, because they knew that I could handle it. I haven't murdered 1 person in my life!

It honestly kind of pisses me off how overprotective my parents are, and I'm against your view. I think if their parents let 'em play the games, then it's their decision. Actually, if and when I have kids, I'm going to let them do kind of whatever. Do your parents have a lot of restrictions on games, music, etc?
Hell Yes this right here!!!!^^^

See, this is why I listen to punk. Especially stuff like Green Day, because they're always ragging on the government and authority in general
( http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cDBlqu6KF4k ). And they use strong language. It's more the fact that I'm getting away with listening to the explicit version than the language itself. Kind of the whole "sin with a grin" thing, y'know?
