Don't put too much thought into what you heard said over a game. You can be sure the speaker didn't.

I hate how popular this has become since Yahtzee started using it.
Just because Yahtzee says it does not mean that other people don't. He is a very literary person, and a funny voice-actor, but that does not mean that he is the be-all and end-all of the English language. It is a common phrase. /rant

Ahem... I suppose there's nothing more I can add to what has already been said... There's really nothing you can do but ignore them.

How often did you see it on these forums before Yahtzee started using it?

I can tell you without a doubt that it's popped up more and more, as with anything Yahtzee says, since he did say it.

I'm well aware that Yahtzee didn't invent the phrase and that people have said it before him. All too aware, in fact. However, one can't ignore the fact that it's increased in use since he publicised it.

Same with the "Short answer: No. Long answer: Nooooooooo~~~~~~~~~~~" thing.

The word '******' has been a part of the English language for nearly 700 years. It has served as an insult of some sort or another for about the past 400. It has been considered a slur against homosexuals, primarily in North America, for about the past 70. So really, people who think it's unquestionably homophobic to use this word to mean anything other than homosexual are not only overly politically correct, but also short-sighted and painfully ignorant. If this word were created de novo for this purpose, they might have a point. Considering the fact that it has only had this meaning for approximately ten percent of its existence, however, and then only in one part of the world, people who suggest that this is the only meaning it shall ever have just sound a little stupid, to be honest.

It's not homophobia. From its opening frickative to its middle gutteral to its closing tongue thrust, it's just too satisfying and fun to say to pass out of existence. It sounds like a put-down. It sounds like a very effective one, in fact.

I don't use it myself when I play games, because I know some people find it offensive. I also don't call people motherfuckers, douchebags, dickheads, pussies, or assholes when I'm online for the same reason. I don't find people who use this word any more annoying or hurtful than the people who use the words in the previous sentence.

Words change, language changes, and context is everything. Don't be so sensitive.

''A ****** is a kind of meatball. The mixture is shaped in the hand into balls, wrapped round with caul fat (the omentum membrane from the pig's abdomen), and baked.''

Source, Wikipedia.

All i've ever known a ****** to be really.
Gah! I hate those stupid Halo MEATBALLS!

But seriously, I think the reason they use that word so much is because it sounds so unpleasant in our society, not to mention it's discouraged from use. So naturally to insult someone you use an unpleasant word.

Though it's gotten old. I think we should go back to the good old days of calling people idiots and retards when they botch up a good kill. Nobody could get offended by that.

Why is ****** such a hated word? I mean, sure, maybe it's mean to call someone an obnoxious biker, but sometimes it is fully justified.

The simple nullification of said insult, is to ask why they're referring to you as a bundle of sticks, twigs or branches, bound together to use for lighting fires. Additionally, the term used to be used against women. Not homosexuals.
Also the elderly.

PhiMed, you would only be right if it weren't for the fact that 99.999% of the people using the word "******" are using it to mean homosexual. They don't know how long the word has been around, they think they're calling people they don't like gay.

Quite correct (for the United States); the phrase is meant to imply that someone is homosexual. While the same meaning is shared by calling someone "gay", both are intended as an attack on the others' masculinity, which emotionally causes the victim to act more aggressive to prove their masculinity... thus getting mad or upset. Once the victims of this remark (which includes damn near everyone to ever voice chat in a game) realize that an attack on another man's masculinity is simply the attackers' way of puffing out his chest, pounding on it with both fists like a caveman to assume a more alpha-male role, then the victims will not get mad or upset, but instead become competitive. A competitive male is more likely to assume the alpha-male position than a taunting male. Note that a taunting male is not competitive, thus already proving that he is striving to force out any competitive males, and has already proclaimed himself to be a smaller, inferior male.

The alpha-male is the one that gets to mate with the female's as per the female's choice. Remember, if someone calls you a "******" or "gay" and you have not, women want to have sex with you and not him. Grats!

I'd say it's more because of the force behind the word rather than the actual meaning. Shouting "F*cking ******" just seems heavier and more releasing than "asshat" or "noob" (of which the latter simply sounds geeky). We have a similar phenomenon in Dutch - some people swear with "kanker" (Dutch for 'Cancer') simply because it's such a good word to lose your anger in. Screaming "KANKER!" simply feels more releasing then sounding something like "Loser!" or "Homo!" or what have you. I reckon this is because of the two K's and R in the word, which make it sound fairly vicious.

On the serious side of this, people just have this ingrained belief that homosexuality is a bad thing because of years of this being the social norm. People who are either insecure of their own sexuality, a bigot, an imbecile, or an 11 year old who is too young to know what a real insult is, feel that calling people out on their sexuality, even if their accusations are completely false, feel that they are having a big effect on the feelings of the recipient. Until society as a whole accepts gay culture for what it is, we won't progress past this, because it will always carry negative connotations. As long as something labels you as "not normal in the eyes of society", people will use it as an insult. It just happens that "fag" is a nice simple word that even the most determinedly moronic internet user can grasp the pronunciation of.

And to your question of whether it can replace an actual point, in their minds it does, because if you are insulted then they are now superior to you. Sadly, this is why "your mum" and "your face" are still equally popular comebacks during what was previously an intelligent debate.

Your point would carry a little more weight if the OP had not lamented the fact that this word has taken the place of a catch-all insult. He (or she) wondered out-loud why homosexuality is equated with negative qualities. My point is that this is not obviously the case. This word is often used to mean "you're stupid/incompetent/obnoxious", rather than "you engage in sexual acts with people of the same gender as yourself." Similarly, referring to someone as an asshole doesn't necessarily mean you believe they are, in fact, the exit point of a coelomate's alimentary tract, calling someone a scumbag doesn't mean you believe they are actually a used condom, referring to someone as a ************ doesn't mean you have personal knowledge of their acting out of their Oedipal complex, and calling someone a dickhead doesn't mean you believe they are indeed the glans of a penis.

Your point would also be more valid if you had the ability to read minds and surmise the intentions of the people who use this word online... who you've never met... who are separated from you by distances of several if not hundreds of miles... whose faces and gestures you have never seen. Wait, you don't, do you? What am I thinking now?

This is the result of societies degrading and falling back from upward development...
Lot's of people grow smarter in every way...
But an even larger portion seems to grow only in their and others own stupidity...

Clicker is also very right in saying:
It's just a word that people (idiots) use as a substitute for other insults, because when they use it, not only do they insult you, but also make themselves feel better about their heterosexuality.

I think you folks go to deep into it. Someone who'se mad at you and calls you a ****** isn't going to think "He's homosexual and I'm heterosexual therefore I'm better". Sure, there's some people who consciously use words like that (real homophobes), but most people just swear to release their anger, intimidate or show their dissatisfaction.
