1. FTL is impossible (discounting the warp drive loophole) bending space, however, is not. Holding to that, you don't have to travel at massive speeds to move massive distances rapidly ie. Battlestar Galactica jump style.

Dark energy, which is the driving force behind the expansion of the univeres is FTL and is getting faster all the time. Sure we can't achieve it ourselves, but the speed of light isn't the fastest travel speed in the cosmos as far as actually traveling through space goes.

OT: It's either some kind of collission and the tail is the debris of that explosion, or some gaseuos anomally.

So gravity fucked it up.

It's quite obviously not a spaceship, although I've no idea what it is.
Don't be such a downer. It's obviously a giant alien fleet bent on wiping out all humanity.
OT: I wish it was something more, but common sense says no, it's just a meteor.
Besides, I don't even believe in faster than light travel.
Yeah, but what does FTL travel have to do with anything?
Well, canonically, the Reapers come every (insert years here) and destroy species that are advanced (i.e., space colonization, FTL drives, etc.)

Part of the picture looked like it had been clipped. Not sure if it's real but, if so Shepard will no doubt protect humanity AGAIN.

Didn't know dark energy is a real thing. Thought it was a Mass Effect invention.

I thought the Hubble was falling apart all the time. It is the opening monologue joke of the space exploration world.

Nobody panic, it's just a Starfury [http://www.b5tech.com/earthalliance/earthallianceshipsandvessels/earthfighters/starfury.html] on patrol, nothing to be afraid of.

Of course, it might be a Vorlon Star Dreadnaught [http://www.b5tech.com/vorlon/vorlonships/vorlonstardreadnought.html] instead, in which case we're all going to die, so you may resume your panicking.

Dark energy may not be real, but it's certainly a real-life theory [http://imagine.gsfc.nasa.gov/docs/science/mysteries_l1/dark_energy.html] with a lot of real-life physicists researching it.

Maybe they come in peace, or maybe we're all screwed.

Either way, lets see what it is, is it even heading towards Earth?

Bring it on, space mollusks! My biotic coven has been preparing for this since the first Mass Effect came out.

It does kinda look like that ship from the Citidel in Mass Effect, the Asari naval ship I think
Yeah, it does sort of look like the Destiny Ascension, but why would the Citadel Fleet's flagship come over here?

Probably just an icy rock, an asteroid with an icy surface. The trail is just the part of the asteroid which is icy being blown away from the object and illuminated by the solar wind, just like a comet's tail.

Not an expert, mind you. Just what it looks like to me.

Saying it's spaceship-like is a little bit like someone finding a picture of Jesus in a grilled cheese sandwich.

Unless maybe it IS Jesus.

Hmm... That debris trail does look kind of cross-li OHMYGODITSJESUSAMENHALLELUJAH!!!!1!!!1

I'm saying that aliens probably can't go faster than light either because it's impossible.
Actually, there are a few theories that might possibly work. Most notably, a warp drive. Basically (and please don't ask me to explain in detail, this stuff is bonkers)it creates a small area of space where the speed of light is faster than the one in the normal universe, so inside of the warp, you're still going slower than light, but to the rest of the universe, it's faster.

For more, look here http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Alcubierre_drive
Meh, still prefer wormholes. Bending the fabric of space-time so where you are and where you want to be are on top of each other just seems like a more convenient option.
