For the life of me I've been trying to figure this one out, mostly because I am sorta trying NOT to see it as a whiny feminist attacking the closest man in proximity.
I could understand the Idea of a hate filled love song... But the whole thing seemed really bitter and angry though... To be honest, she only acknowledges that Yahtzee is witty, cynical, and smart. The rest of the song she spends bashing him.
I thought, "O.K, maybe it is all supposed to be ironic. The whole portion about where she states she would 'rather stab herself in the eye than go out with his mysoginistic mind' has a little IRONIC flash afterwards... It could all just be a joke."
-I mean the thing with the screwdriver could be a subtle drink reference.
But some of the ending just didn't add up to Ironic, funny, or love song related
-"Call me a raging feminist, but your on my black list, you really pissed me off, cause you put her down... I won't stand for it now."
I figured, O.K. this may be referring to a personal... incident? I mean, if you made such a HUGE deal about asking someone out it would not make sense to reject them while trying to win them over...
Well, maybe it is some inside joke between them I thought. I decided to check out their twitters.
Yahtzee "I resent being called a misogynist..." followed by some joke about hating everything and everyone that we've all heard before.
Mayes "you might not be misogynist but in my eyes you are making sexism/homophobia socially acceptable."
O.K... Once again for someone who is trying to WIN someone over this seems EXTREMELY counter productive. Maybe Yahtzee has stated somewhere his feelings towards it.
"Also, Rebecca Mayes either loves me or wants me dead. It's a little unclear."-Fullyramblamatic.
O.K, so if it's a joke Maye's target audience (Yahtzee since it was "for him") doesn't see the humor in it. Well maybe she said something on HER blog about it. Well, not yet. However I did find the article on Heavy Rain about her armpit hair.
http://www.gamepeople.co.uk/audioblog_rebeccamayes_22.htm
Tl;Dr? In short, she talks about how she refuses to shave her armpits because she sees it as making a "statement". Not to mention she posted those videos about women in gaming, no one knows what its like to be a woman, cool story bro.
So if it's not a joke, what is it? First off let me say I am a chauvinist and a troll NORMALLY, however this is not one of those cases. I don't troll escapist cause there is too much ban hammering, and despite being a chauvinist I LOVE Rebecca Mayes work (sure it's gimicky, but I like that... Myspace is already filled with too many idiots who write deep music).
Well music wise, I do like it. It's more complex than her previous works and I enjoy the melody throughout.
And lyrically I would of been alright with it (a bit whiny but different so it COULD work).
My gripe is the build up to this. It seems vindictive, petty, but worse of all like it was done solely for the purpose of attention. Declaring you have a crush, then building huge hype about how much work you put in to it, BEGGING for people to help you write it, then just attacking someone who hasn't stated (or returned) any interest in you is... Sort of pathetic.
"Well maybe she's saying she's interested in him but wants him to change." That wouldn't work, since SHE is the one trying to engage him. It's sort of a why like him is you don't like so much about them?
If it was her just writing a song about how she is not a fan of Yahtzee, this would just fine and maybe even funny and Ironic.
But how does doing THIS song prove anything? It surely doesn't help the case of Women's rights any... If anything wouldn't this re-enforce any prejudices a misogynist has about all women being sad, petty, pathetic attention whores who make up lies? Wouldn't it just be proof that feminists are irrational creature who go out of their way to find things to get upset about and then try and rally a mini army of supporters through deception?
Tl;Dr?
-Good song musically.
-lyrics are piss poor
-if it was a joke there is no proof, or she just bad at comedy (despite other funny videos)
-comes off like a pissy feminist finding things to be upset about and then trying to tell the world we should care because... she does?
-Counter productive to proving a misogynist wrong.
-Whats the point of asking a person out just to insult them?
-Why lie? Seriously, I'm a FAN of Mayes (Yahtzee's very enjoyable, but I like something I can see more than once).
-Seriously, what person asks someone out just so they can be a ***** about it later?
I Don't know, thought she'd have more integrity
