to the designers of this game:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0BoDxFqx2so

as for good reboots... well... lets see:
TF2 (seeing as how it's way different from the first, but keeps the basic idea)
Spiderman 2 (it introduced free roming web swinging to the series)
Prince of Persia (I havn't played it, but I hear it's AMAZING)
but yeah, that's all I gathered from aboot 5 minutes of thinking and Spidey and TF2 dont really count... sooooo.... yeah...

RIP Spyro the Dragon; you will be missed, old friend...
*sings* HE'S NOT JUST A FIRE HAZARD A-NY MOOOOOOOOOOOORRRRRRRE!!!

Spyro
you used to be cute and fiesty
the new you looks ugly and evil
i want it to stop
never ever ever ever ever ever ever do another game ever please Spyro
the third one was the last good one and even then it wasn't as good as 1 or 2

and as for reboots
hmm considering how drastically it changed both setting and the type of zombie
i'm going to say Resident Evil 4 counts as a reboot
and you know. it's actually a very good one

Eurgh, what console is that game running on? Also, why did they suddenly feel the need to give the lead character an extra chromosome [I have nothing against Down's Syndrome sufferers, by the way. It's just that Spyro has a very distinct resemblance to that particular condition in that screenshot]?
is it wrong that I:
A. laughed
and
B. AGREED with you?
...
yes, yes it is...
lol

OT: seriously designers, the fuck is this?

Resident Evil 4 was a good reboot. Castlevania:Lords of Shadow is an Ok reboot, damn good 3d Castlevania though.

With that being said, is every new Mario game for a new console a reboot since it changes drastically in setting and play mechanics?

*watches trailer*
oh, good, this will BOMB... okay, false alarm people... this is just a flashier Bomberman: Act Zero... this will fail and we can rest easy until SINO (Spyro In Name Only) arises again thanks to the powers of Gonad, Pillock, and Spack, the three dipshit game designers of old

That Spyro picture is pretty awful...but it still distresses me less than the new Dante design.

I don't think reboots are necessarily a terrible thing. I just think they should be reserved for games/franchises that haven't been seen in a looong time.

I don't know if I would consider Resident Evil 4 a reboot... I mean, it has a number in the end which would imply that it's more of a sequel.

But I can agree that Castlevania: Lords of Shadow is a reboot though.

Do you know any examples of good or bad reboots?
I have three game series that, you could say went through reboots, 2 unsuccessful and 1 successful (imo).

Crash Bandicoot died after Crash Bandicoot 3, not the character, the game series, it was sold by Naughty Dog, and the first PS2 Crash Bandicoot game was a disaster, it didn't pay homage to the original series. Likewise for Spyro, excellent series on the PS1 as well, again, not so good on the PS2, and I think this remake is almost a second attempt (I agree his face is a bit off, not pointy enough).

The third, which is sort of a remake, but not really, Rachet and Clank was excellent on the PS2, and was still excellent on the PS3, and I don't think there are any exceptions across the entire series, which is great.

And what do you think is the key to making a good reboot?
Well, I think you need to keep the character/s true to the series, whilst introducing new elements of gameplay and interesting stories, while of course improving graphics. So it can be a pretty hard task, especially if members of the team who worked on the original, and did so well, are replaced by an entirely new team/company/director/ect.

Who the heck decided Spyro needs to look like a gremlin?
Exactly what I thought!

Looks like a purple winged troll. No thanks, unless they make his snout longer, I shall not be keeping an eye out for this.

An example of bad reboot, DMC...now DMC: Origins or somesuch. Dante smokes, has black hair and is trapped somewhere. As if the other DMC didn't even matter.

I doubt any reboot is a good one.
This is a bit unfair. It isn't out yet. There could be a perfectly good reason for the new look, and he may even be back to normal by the end of the game. I'm not putting money on it, but still. If it can hold it's weight story-wise and keep Dante in his heyday of humor (DMC3 (and from what I've heard, DMC4) level), then it'll be a pretty good reboot in my opinion. Given the other games, I'm taking good gameplay as a given, because there's no hope if the screw that up.
He will have white hair again, this I know. But it's from a different writer (the other one stepped out). It somewhat ignores all the other DMC and Dante just isn't Dante. I would honestly not complained about any story as long as he would have stayed himself but he just looked and acted odd. Gameplay is not the issue as much as ruining a character that I really liked. I will await to see what it's like but I'm not really confident about it.

It occurred to me just now that this may not be a Spyro reboot. This may just be

'ActionFigures In Game!'

*Now WITH Spyro cameo!

From what I've seen, it doesn't really have a general spyro plot. Most of the action figures aren't even dragons. It's just a game with a quick spun-together playground that you can input action figures into. And they're using Spyro's inbred half-brother as a way to turn heads.

Can't say if it's a reboot, but I did not like Breath of Fire: Dragon Quarter. They took a brilliant game series and went, uh, somewhere with it. It wasn't like any of the previous games. You were timed, and basically punished for using 'dragon' powers. It wasn't fun. The character design was also thrown on its head. And it was inappropriately named (since it's the 5th game. Many people thought it Was game 4, which was sad since BoF 4 was pretty good.)

As for good reboots... uh... hm... Give me a moment...

...

Not a game, but I did like what they did to Doctor Who.

I saw the concept art...

...and I think he looks pretty cool. Although I have never played a Devil May Cry game so I have no idea if this change contradicts his character or something. (But it probably does, since so many people mentioned it)
