Reboots you actually like

Seeing as Reboots are generally looked down upon and usually for good reason, I'd like to express the question which is my thread title: What Reboots do you actually like?

I'll give my own. I recently finished Tomb Raider 2013. It does annoy me that it's the prequel to Tomb Raider and it has the same name. I'm also annoyed that I find the story of TR 2013 more interesting than most of the original series, but I really enjoyed it. Yes it's well and truly stuck in the AAA industry's 2013 mindset and it may as well be a Tomb Raider mod of Uncharted but I found it's gameplay to be fun, the story mildly engaging and even found the characters quite engaging when they aren't busy being plot devices. It helps that I finished this game before I tried Uncharted 2 which I find to be the much less preferable experience, otherwise I might have been put off it.

I've also bought the Strider reboot with Games for Gold, and I'll try that out for more than fifteen minutes soon enough.

I really liked the DMC reboot. I honestly had way more fun with it than DMC3 which was boring as fuck. I'm sorry but flow breaking nonsensical find key > open door > repeat forever area design has no place in a hack and slash game. The reboot definitely recognises and fixes this with some genuinely fun platforming.

The reboot still had the old problem that DMC never manages to have decent enemy visual designs. DMC1 started with you cutting up non-threatening scarecrows followed by a giant spider boss fight and it never managed to improve much from there. The reboot has very striking environment design though which looks awesome and the combat animations are beautiful. I never get tired of the standard two Rebellion combos (another way it beats DMC3) the ending hit to both of them has Dontay throw himself off balance for maximum impact not giving a fuck that it would put him in a really awful combat position realistically speaking. You can switch between every weapon in the game in a fight, albeit you need to use the D-pad which might be a tad difficult in a fight but it's better than leaving half your stuff behind for no reason (eyyy DMC3, nice to see you again) and even if I hated everything else, the visuals and the combat can and will carry the entire game for me.

The story is a nice re-imagining of Vergul and Dontay's origins (I even forgot that they were going to end up fighting up at the end) Dontay isn't as bad as people would have you believe, seeing as his total dickhead ways disappear post mission 2. The dialogue is a bit wonky and occasionally bloody tasteless, i'm not sure how much the devs are playing off as ironic or if they genuinely think this is good dialogue. I'm not even going to try to defend the Succubus boss fight for example.

"Fuck you"

"Fuck you"

"FUCK YOU"

Truly a delightful exchange, a masterclass of video game writing. Dante had bad jokes that were still somewhat funny because they were cheesy whereas Dontay just swears a lot and makes bad pop culture references. Hey I never said the reboot was perfect.

Going to be completely boring here. Yes, Tomb Raider. But I'm easy to please in some regards: Beautiful looks? Check. Solid gameplay? Check. Stuff to explore, not being tight to rails? Check. And then, with regards to the franchise (from what I remember) No more SuperMeatBoy-ledges of deaths by-the-dozen? Check?! Yay!

I can then easily overlook the more, uhm, awkward bits Hey, Sam. Uh, what's up?

The Dark Knight trilogy and Casino Royale, if movies count. Although I find movies have a much better track record for successful reboots than video games.

The Sands of Time trilogy, though admittedly the games before then didn't have much of a connecting story.
Mortal Kombat.
Wolfenstein: The New Order.

let's get the easy answer out of the way, yes Tomb Raider (2013) it's probably my favorite game of the last console generation, it was a glorious game that brought back everything I love about Metroid and Syphon Filter. Can't wait for the sequel :D

as for other reboots, I'm gonna get a lot of hate but DMC. Dante was just likeable to me this time around. Instead of a douche emo cool guy wannabe we just got a bro douche and the combat system was fun. Also having Yahtzee as Vergil was a brilliant idea

XCOM: Enemy Unknown, I didn't even know this was a reboot until I red it on the website, but goddammit was this a good game :)

Ninja Gaiden for the original X-Box was amazing. It set the bar for what action games should be, even today it's still an awesome game that everyone should play. Story was confusing as hell but man was the gameplay good

BloodRayne: Betrayal, not as popular as any of the other games I've mentioned but the game was awesome. It was hard as balls but the combos you could pull of and complete screen domination was just a blessing to do. Also the story while predictable was fairly entertaining. I never played the old Bloodrayne games so I don't know how they compare :(

Double Dragon Neon, everything that was good about the 80's plus Skeletor as the main bad guy. Only a communist wouldn't enjoy this

Agree on DmC. Combat was very well thought out. Not super challenging but almost puzzle like in how you needed to string together attacks to get past certain combinations of enemies.

But the number one re-imagining is of course ....

Metroid Prime!

Didnt like much about Tomb Raider, the best parts of it (platforming and puzzles) were barely present but when they did show up outside of those linear segments I really enjoyed it. The most fun I had with the game was finding the collectibles.

Then we got XCOM: EU that was fucking awesome but I never played the originals so I cant really comment on what it does better or worse.

The same with Jagged Alliance BiA, not as awesome but I still enjoyed how the combat worked even though I know a lot of the fans dont.

DMC:Devil May Cry, Tomb Raider and XCOM were all very solid reboots.

I enjoyed all of them equally.

Ninja Gaiden for the Xbox, and then it's re-releases and the second one (third one, not so much). That game was amazing.

Tomb Raider, as everyone else has already said.

I enjoyed XCOM, but I was also disappointed in it. The combat was fun, but the story was just...meh. And when I saw the ending, it just kind of killed the game for me.

Chalk another up for Tomb Raider 2013 it managed the impossible make a Tomb Raider game I enjoy and Lara Croft actually somewhat likeable.

Ninja Gaiden on the xbox was also excellent but slipped up more and more with each main sequel.

Double Dragon Neon is also great brought back memories of playing the original so many years ago.

I am probably missing a load but these 3 are definitely up there for me.

The new Strider game is absolutely fantastic. It treats the source material with enough reverence to feel like it belongs without feeling like a game you've played already. Brilliant stuff and I only hope it is just the start of a new beginning for the Strider franchise.

Prior to that, I really liked Ninja Gaiden for the Xbox (NG2 was pretty good as well, better in some ways, worse in others).

Prince of Persia 2008. I really enjoyed the game and wish they hadn't canned that particular series, especially after the setup at the end. I loved the Sands of Time trilogy (except Warrior Within... I hated running around blindly trying to find the path to the "correct" time-thiny to continue the plot. Loved the music, though) but 2008 had its own thing going and I was into it.

DmC was fantastic. Great music, great platforming, great combat, great performance (on PC) and some really cool level/boss design. It had some problems (forced red/blue weapon usage), but I still remember it fondly. I haven't played any of the old DMC games (never had a PS2) so I'll probably try DMC3/4 at some point... maybe my opinion will change.

Games wise, I liked Tomb Raider and DmC a lot. Never played either of their respected franchises before, although I have seen Let's Plays of the other DMC games. I liked the more realistic approach to Lara Croft and her struggles, even if the mystery/story of the game was too predictable. DmC was pretty good all around, and the story I thought was a lot better compared to some of the other ones. They just need to focus on a bit more world building.

Other wise, Battlestar Galactica the re-imagined series is one of my favorite tv shows of all time, despite the fact they wrote the last two seasons on the seat of their pants and not planned out. Movie wise, probably the new evil dead. Didn't see the original, but I found this new one to be pretty OK all things considered.

Shadow Warrior looks great, although I'll have to wait until it's on PSN or I get a better PC. Would you believe even Blood 2 chugs whenever I pull the trigger?

I was just a bit too young to have watched the original, but the Dukes of Hazzard with Johnny Knoxville and Sean William Scott was great imo. Same goes with Knight Rider but that didn't last long :(

Wolfenstien (not the New Order) was fun, not great, but fun.

I'm honestly having trouble coming up with reboots.

I'm going to be real original and say DmC: Devil May Cry, Tomb Raider and XCOM: Enemy Unknown.

DmC: Fantastic looking game with a beautiful aesthetic, satisfying and intense combat (on higher difficulties, the three you get at the start are too easy) and a killer soundtrack to smash demons in the face to. I actually really like New Dante and Kat, although Vergil is definitely the star of the show. The DLC Vergil's Downfall where you get to play as him is great too. The story while dumb is highly enjoyable.

Tomb Raider is a blast to play, Lara is so fluid and responsive in combat. Yea it's kinda ridiculous that she's able to comprehensively take down so many dudes but boy is it fun. I'd go so far as to say the gameplay is more enjoyable than Uncharted 3's, although the story isn't quite so good.

XCOM: EU is an awesome strategy game, challenging on high difficulties and making your decisions have real ramifications (especially on Ironman mode). As time progresses through the game you get attached to your regular troops as they go up the ranks and take down more and more aliens. It makes their loss when they get one shot by a fucking Cyberdisc or Muton Elite all the more gutwrenching.

Okay, I didn't know this was mainly about video games when I clicked it, so I'm gonna post my other stuff here too, but I will be sure to think about video game reboots that I have enjoyed as well.

Gamera - Gamera did 8 films throughout the 60's and 70's, but his 1990's reboot trilogy was AMAZING. Some of my favorite films, not even just favorite Kaiju films. Just...favorite movies in general.

Godzilla - Yes, I really liked the 2014 Godzilla. I think this was a really well done film in a reboot of one of my favorite franchises.

Persona 3 - While not really a reboot of the series, Persona 3 really shook up the series and made it VASTLY different from the previous games. I know it's really just a sequel, but the game changed so much that it may as well be a reboot.

Devil Summoner: The Raidou Games - Much like the previous one, Raidou Kuzunoha vs. The Soulless Army wasn't really a reboot, just the third Devil Summoner game, but again, it went with such a different tone in gameplay and story that it's basically a reboot.

XCOM: Enemy Unknown - ...it's a good game. That's really all I have to say.

Shadow Warrior 2013.

When I first played it, I was only expecting a shooter similar to Painkiller or Bulletstorm (Flying Wild Hog is composed by ex People Can Fly devs), I really wasn't expecting much story wise, or even the lenght of the game. Oh boy, was I surprised. The gameplay was spectacular, the graphics were incredibly nice, with a great variety of scenery and colors (I really dig the modern japanese setting), the story while being incredibly cheesy and nonsensical, I really liked it, especially Hoji, even Lo Wang himself was actually pretty likable, even if at the beginning he starts as a complete jackass.

Also pretty lenghty too, 20 hours to finish it, epic boss fights and a ton of weapons to blow your enemies to tiny bits, I also liked the combo system for the sword, though a bit clunky on Mouse + Keyboard, was actually pretty tight with a controller.

So yeah, in my book, THIS is how you do a reboot.

Also the Thief reboot is a guilty pleasure of mine, yes, it's not as good as the previous games, yes, the sound engine is broken beyond repair, yes, the story is pretty bad and yes, the traverse system is clunky at best. But still, I really enjoyed it, I pre-ordered it, so I got the Bank Heist level and I absolutely LOVED that level, definitely reminded me of the better previous games.

I'll hit up all the cliche titles:

Battlestar Galactica - Yes, some of the plot twists were stupid and the ending's attempt to be profound felt forced. But otherwise I thought it was a damn fine show.

Dr Who - Not sure if it's considered a "reboot" or a continuation. But the New Who does the old classic show justice despite all the common gripes about RTD/Moffat's writing.

The Dark Knight Trilogy - Unlike many people, I was not a fan of Burton's "Batman". It just seemed so...80s. In contrast, Nolan's update had a more epic scope. And I've always been a fan of Christian Bale, so I was stoked when he'd been cast. And it just feels like a win to have an Oscar Winner playing Batman.

Dredd - The movie stayed absolutely faithful to the comic and Karl Urban was AWESOME! For God's sake, movie people, please make another one!

Godzilla (2014) - I liked it. Garreth Edwards captured the essence and spirit of what the King of Monsters is all about.

Don't know if it was necessarily a reboot, but Deus Ex: Human Revolution was a fantastic game. Not perfect, no, but it was a great stealth game. Shame the boss battles sucked, but the rest of the game was a joy to play.

Another one for Tomb Raider, I loved that game way more than I expected to and am eagerly awaiting the sequel.
That said I can't really judge it as a reboot since I've never played any of the previous games in the series. I just felt it was an excellent game on its own.

I find that is the case with alot of things... I like alot of reboots to things I was never very interested in in the first place, I just enjoyed them on their own merits. I don't fault fans for being annoyed that the title of what they like is being plastered on something that may be radically different from what they remember(For example 'Tomb Raider' really isn't an appropriate title for this game considering what it is actually about).

Still whats in a name? They could have thought of any other generic title and the game itself would still have been excellent.
