Starcraft.
beat that a long time ago, good game though
Unless you've reached A rank on iCCup you can't say you've beaten Starcraft...

Warning, any Civilization game is not an RTS but a TBS(turn based strategy), and those suck.
Saying that all TBS games suck is extremely narrow-minded of you and while the Civilization games are indeed TBS games (which might not be the kind of games you like), that doesn't mean they aren't great games.

Homeworld 2
Homeworld 2
and Homeworld 2. Its getting a bit on the old side, but it is still definately worth picking up. My favorite RTS game ever, I still play it some. You won't regret it.

It's a shame you don't want an RTT, because Original War is one of my favorite RTT games of all time, bar none. It has more in common with Command and Conquer than it does with the Total War series, or anything similar to that (in a sense that it is an isometric view, and the points below).

You can build bases, vehicles and whatnot, but the catch is in that game that you level up your soldiers in any of the four fields (soldier, mechanic, scientist, engineer) and when they die, they are gone for good (which is probably why it is an RTT rather than RTS). That may put people off who like to spawn hundreds of expendable soldiers but I love it.

But anyway, off of the top of my head (to name titles that others have not) I can think of Rise Of Nations, and Total Annihilation, both of those games are amazing, check them out.

In TA you are looking at having hundreds of units on-screen at once, if that does anything to sway you, but it is one of the older titles, pre-dating StarCraft.

What the hell is an RTT?

My personal preformance: Company of Heroes
Hands down the best RTS I've ever played in my life, and I've played a LOT of RTS-games.

Wait until Halo Wars maybe? Or Starcraft 2?
No and no. Starcraft 2 is turning out to be just a prettier looking Starcraft and Halo Wars, well, I'll just say that anyone who thinks putting an RTS on a console is a good idea is an idiot. (small exception to End War. maybe.)If you want to play some classic RTS's, I'd recommend Homeworld, Mech Commander 2, Populous: the Beginning, and Company of Heroes. There are others I'd recommend, but I can't remember many at the moment.

Here's a few oddball possibilities for you:

Homeworld 1+2 - no doubt available super cheap, the only decent space-based RTSes I reckon, does the whole '3D camera and formations' stuff really well, and the whole backstory's pretty dang good too. Not much base building but your trad RTS base is replaced with (essentially) a mobile factory. You can have really long epic battles. Also I'm sure I saw a completed Star Wars mod available for it somewhere online.

Rise of Nations - not aged very well, but again v cheap. Bases grow up around cities- you can only have X number of facilities at each city so have to settle new areas to expand. Can get quite unwieldy but is essentially solid with big tech trees to research.

The XCOM games - okay, so they're really turn based and squad level, but theres a lot of base building, tech tree and overall management stuff to do outside of the whole shooting aliens bit. Classic balanced gameplay- very tense and exciting.

Everyone says the Total War games rock, but never got round to it, also the obvious choice Starcraft- but I never really got into it either. Don't know why. Tried a bit of Universe at War recently- didn't wow me though those huge walkers did look great. Give me a SupCom Monkeylord any day!

Hope thats some advice, and I'd also add that this thread highlights the need to separate RTS and RTT games- a couple of years ago I'd have said theres no difference but I think they could become two really distinct genres- DOW2 vs Supreme Commander for example- not really the same type of game but I bet they both get called RTS

Meh, I tried. Safe assumption to say if you liked the original starcraft then the second one should also be good. I agree with you about Halo Wars on a console though... but Halo came out on PC, no reason that couldn't either

Rise of Nations and The Settlers series are both very good. They're more in the style of AOE then your modern/future style RTSs.

Cool thing about Settlers, is that you ahve to carry all the building materials from stores to building site before you can build! - Settlers 3 was on of the best ones, I think Settlers 5 starting going a bit AOE-clone-like.

I wholeheartedly recommend Red Alert 3, on the strength of the Vice President of the United States of America.

Dawn of War 2 releases this Friday, wait a few days, and get that. You liked the first, now play the sequel.

Company of Heroes is a fantastic RTS. Just enough base building to suit your needs (I would think) and it places a firm focus on battles. Seriously, the combat system is better than in any RTS I've ever played. It will be really hard to go back to the traditional Starcraft-style after playing so much CoH in the past year.

I'd also recommend Total Annihilation, but only the original. TA: Kingdoms is a pass unless you want a bit of a chuckle.
