Total Annihilation - This game was ahead of its time when it came out, so I don't know why people frown on it for being older than Starcraft. Only two sides: The Arm and The Core. Only two resources: energy and metal. That's where the simplicity ended. As the Commander, you could do anything from attack enemy buildings or defend your own to building military structures and reclaiming parts of the landscape to help with their construction. It was quite innovative and offered hundreds of units and buildings, whether on land, under sea, or in the air. I'm pretty sure that everyone has their favorite method of going about and kicking ass in this game. My big thing as The Arm was air superiority. I would make a whole mess of Brawler gunships and have them patrol the skies or make surgical strikes on enemy resources. Anyone in their way would be WRECKED very quickly. It was the originality and sheer scope of what you could do in this game that made it so fun to play and I still find fond memories of it.
I still play, with my brother, and I have now got my housemates into it. Hehe, if you go for that, you'll want to get the expansion the Core Contingency too. That adds rapid fire artillary, amphibious kbots and hovercraft to the mix, all the more carnage to play with.

Star Wars Empire at War
It's the only RTS I know of with a pause button. Oh-so-helpful for planning. Or for if you have to go to the bathroom mid-battle. Also, the different factions are pretty balanced. Then again, Ill buy just about anything star wars unless it has anything to do with the prequel trilogy...

Warning, any Civilization game is not an RTS but a TBS(turn based strategy), and those suck.
Blasphemy. TBS's have their own version of entertainment. I'm sorry, but you'll never get the depth of Civilization in any RTS.

I imagine you're the type of person who doesn't enjoy a good game of Risk, Stratego, or Heroscape.

@topic
As if it hadn't been said enough.

Dawn of War. Starcraft. Age of Mythology. Go get. NAO

BTW, all recommendations for Total Annihilation should be turned into recommendations for Spring since the most popular mod for Spring is a direct TA ripoff. Though it also has a large scale WW2 mod (in case you think CoH is too micro-y) and many other things.

Total Annihilation. Total crap by todays standards... but DAMN.... please. Play it. :)
:mad: not rubbish by todays standards, it was massively ahead of its time, yeah ok the graphics are very dated, but it doesnt look that bad, and it does have massive resolution capability, i think my bro even got it working in dual screen, now that is competent coding.

WC 3 + Frozen Throne, may lead to WoW though so watch out if you have a life,
Other than that AoE 2 + Starcraft.

My personal reccomendations are:

Dawn of War (all of them except soulstorm, also include DoW2 whenever it comes out), Red Alert 2/3 and AVP: Extinction (AVP is actually the worst RTS I've ever played to be brutally honest, it's only here to make the other two look even better by comparison).

They should keep you occupied for a while.
