Even if he did only play two hours (and really, if a game takes more than two hours to be remotely enjoyable, there's something seriously wrong), he's a busy man. He's also making his own game, and opening/running a bar. Along with playing the games and making the videos, that's a lot to cram into the week. Especially when you remember essential activities like eating, sleeping, and relieving oneself.

Also, he's not really meant to be taken seriously.

There is a difference.
Correction: He's a comedian that acts like a game critic.

Oh, please. Who cares if Yahtzee doesn't play the full game? His reviews are meant to be jokes. You're not supposed to take him entirely seriously.

Hi folks.

Instead of flooding the already flooded thread of Yatzee's review of Monster Hunter Tri, I decided to open up a thread.

Now, many people may have noticed the high post count on the thread. The reason for the high level of posts is because it is extremely obvious that Yaztee did not play past 2 hours (if that much) in the game.
People dislike this because he played a game called MONSTER HUNTER and didn't even talk about hunting monsters.

The amount of time he spent on Monster Hunter brought back memories of FFXIII, which he played for about 5 hours. Many would argue that 5 hours is more than enough time spent playing a game (to at least get a grasp of the mechanics and what the game is about), Yatzee didn't even grace Monster Hunter with 5 hours.

What do you guys think? Should Yatzee have spent more time playing? Do you feel like it is an insult to his fans?

EDIT: Also, this is not about whether or not he liked the game, it is about how much time he spent playing it. Does 2 hours really seem like enough time to you?
No, I think 2 to 5 hours of playing is perfectly reasonable.

A good game should be able to keep the player interested one way or another almost immediately at the start of gameplay. I know because I played F-Zero GX for a short while only to notice what I saw as a frustrating and unintuative game that I decided to trade in for something that's at least less horrible.

if I can't stand playing a game past a certain point, then as far as I'm concerned, what I've played is what the game is

it can't be argued that it gets better later because the purpose of a game is to entertain, and in small part the game has failed to entertain me in that regards (but at the same time may work for someone else)

different games for different people

I only watch Yahtzee's videos for amusement, nothing else.

I trust his reviews about as much as Fox News. o shit that rhymed

But yeah, watch for the comedy and not the opinions. I couldn't give a flying fuck about his actual viewpoint, which is why I really don't enjoy Movie Bob or whatever his name is.
Yeah, see, Yahtzee is really just there for comedy. Movie Bob uses comedy but he's also a serious critic, unlike Yahtzee. I can honestly say that I haven't seen a single one of Movie Bob's reviews that I agreed with, and I watch a lot of films and make short films with friends too. So I agree with Janat here, especially with the Fox News bit, but also in that I don't really care too much for Movie Bob, nor for Yahtzee's viewpoint on games. If I'm ever in Australia and head to the Mana Bar then I can chat to Yahtzee then about his real gaming views, but while I watch ZP I'll take his opinons with a hefty dose of salt, thank you very much.

Honestly, if it's a bad game, then why continue playing?
Because he's paid to play... :|
It's his JOB to play a game, even if it is bad.
I'm pretty sure his job is to write funny stuff about games.
Not to play them, not to properly review them, but just to be funny.

I watch yahtzee's reviews because I want to see what he can knitpick out of a game. Frankly I don't give a flying boot about what he says/thinks.

So hey, he does it for the entertainment of others which is fair enough. Don't feel bad about it.

The most valid point he made was to only play the first few hours. The game (and indeed every game in the franchise) does next to nothing to grip the player, bar the mandatory big bad monster shows up seemingly easy quest to chase you a little near the start.

Apart from the already dedicated fans, Monster Hunter Tri's welcoming appeal was stretched thin that new players wind up confused and more often than not bored out of their mind. Most gamers won't bother to stick with the game for the colossal monster battles some chapters in the future. (They ARE chapter based games, if you think differently kindly look at the star ranking progression system)

A game should fully immearse you in 2 hours.

In Halo, after 2 hours, you've gone far past the tutorial and are already on a planet fighting alien apes.

In Mass Effect, you watch 3-5 minute opening intro and then get a short combat tutorial that can be completed in maybe a half hour. Then you're sent on your first mission and by the end of the 2 hours the entire world is open to you.

In Oblivion, they literally give you a half-hour of a tutorial dungeon and then throw you outside to explore the world. You can literally play for 5 hours and not even touch the main storyline.

The difference is that after 2 hours and the game still hasn't gotten good, then you know that there is a mistake. 5 hours is far more then enough time to get into a game. 2 hours is where I would draw the line.

If he doesn't like it, he doesn't like it. Who really cares? If people take so much offense to a guy who constantly reminds everyone that he points out all major flaws because no one likes to hear him point out the good things, then maybe they should take a step away from the computer and remember that they determine a good game from the bad games. Not someone who speaks really fast on the internet.

I love the Fable series, he slaughtered them, I lol'd. He's a critic and comedian all rolled into one. Not meant to be taken seriously, he's here for lulz.

No one really cares he is a game critic and comedic one at best please stop taking anything he does seriously except criticism and no 5 hours is not enough time to get into a good game that needs a fleshed out story like KotOR or nearly any FF or any RPG for that matter. He did the same for the Witcher and the same for FFXIII and will do the same again. All he does is critise and mostly for comedy do not take it seriously.

ZP is about humor and reexamining mainstream viewpoints. I don't really care how long Yahtzee plays because he reviews from the "layman's" view - his opinion is probably more realistic or relevant than those of other game journalists.

I miss the old Yahtzee. He still ripped games apart like he does now, but his videos had more substance to them. I think this has to do with how much more he actually played them back then as opposed to now.

I have to interrupt you there, Adam. If you're going to criticize video games and are being paid to do so, you should do your best regardless of how bad the game is. Instead it seems like he's only playing a small portion of the game and makes a formulaic video with completely irrelevant analogies that have become increasingly lengthy to stretch for time. It's like Family Guy using the "remember when..." line, but with Yahtzee its "It's like a...".

I know he's busy with all the other things he's doing - most of which has been built on his ZP fame - but if he's currently dragging his show down because of how sidetracked he's become.

Yahtzee might be more of a comedian, that is if he actually ever was funny, but in the early days of his videos he was interesting to watch because most of the time he was actually right. I've never watched him for the comedy, I used to watch him because he gave a better view of what a game was about then most reviewers, even if he did focus on the negative aspects more.

Also, Yahtzee can't insult his fans. They already do a brilliant job at it themselves.

He did the same thing to The Witcher, and was hailed as the pinnacle of hilariousness for his lack of patience. The instant he does it to a JRPG it's the bloody apocalypse!

Hah!

Honestly though, it didn't bother me when he did it to The Witcher, why would it bother me now? I don't watch Zero Punctuation for reviews or genuine insight, I watch it to listen to some bored brit bash the hell out of a chosen game in an amusing way.
