I know there's no shortage of them out there, but I want to hear from you so that I can focus on the best (or at least your strongest recommendations). Thanks in advance to all who reply.

Condemned: Criminal Origins. And to beat anyone else, Amnesia: the Dark Descent.

I'll third Amnesia.
Also if you can somehow get ps1 games Dino Crisis/Dino Crisis 2 are two of my favourite games from that era.

THIIIIS.

SOOOO MUUUUCH THIIIIS.

Let me put it this way: video games NEVER scare me. Ever. I thought Silent Hill 2 was barely even a 3 on the "creepy" scale.

Until that game. That fucking game. Amnesia is literally exhausting for me to play. It pulls you in so freakin' well.

Just, if you do... CONSERVE YOUR OIL.

Ugh... sorry, but I was in this same thread yesterday...

Amnesia and Fatal Frame are the two scariest games out there. I play Dead Space like it's nothing and Condemned was intense at best, but Amnesia and Fatal Frame will make you change your pants. And they're also the two games that always show up in these threads.

Forgot Silent Hill 2. Silent Hill 1, as well, though they dropped off in quality after that.

Afraid of Monsters, a Half-Life mod. It's actually a lot like Amnesia but obviously a lot older.

The entire Fatal Frame series. Even 4 if you can get your hands on it.
When i first played them i thought the idea of using a camera for gameplay was lame as hell. Those games have already been at the top of my lists for a long time as far as horror and just great games in general.

Plus i have always been intrested in Japanese folklore and legends, which Fatal Frame has quite a lot of.

Condemned: Crimminal Origins (Don't play the second one)
Alan Wake (Not really HORROR but it'll make you jump and stay on your toes)
Dead Space 1 and 2 (1 more than 2 by quite a bit but if you play through 1 give 2 a shot)
And the first 2 chapters of Bioshock

Call of Cthulu: Dark Corners of the Earth.
I forgot about Cthulu, its older but still scary as shift.
Same goes for the early Resident Evils. Old but good.
And try out Resident Evil 4, its slightly newer and different but still freaky

Heres a weird one. Clocktower. The series is similar to Amnesia but instead of a bunch of monsters there is usually only one psycho killer after you. Its like playing a victim in a Friday the 13th movie.I mostly recommend the first and second one.

Well, I don't play much horror, since most modern horror games are crap.

STALKER is technically survival horror, and it's an awesome game, though I'm not sure its what you're looking for.

I'd call it an Action-Horror game, because almost anything can be killed with one of the many guns you get access to in the game.

But, if something gets the jump on you, and I mean ANYTHING, you can die real quick, no matter how big of a rocket launcher you have.
Also, the creepy atmosphere of the Zone is extremely well done.

Everyone seems to be saying Amnesia, but I personally liked Penumbra (the other horror game from that same company) a bit better. Not sure why, but it was more engaging to me from the beginning.
I got stuck on Amnesia for fairly early on and I haven't played it in a while since that but Penumbra was a bit more fun and the story was more interesting to me from the start.

So yeah, as for now, Penumbra is my answer. That and Silent Hill of course :3

lol Amnesia, I got scared just watching videos of people playing that game. Made it all the more sad though that my comp isn't good enough to play it :(

The first time I ever played the original Clock Tower, that was definitely a pants-changer. I'd be interested in giving it a whirl now that I'm a little older, but I wholeheartedly support this recommendation.

Everyone has already said the big ones. The resident evil remake on gamecube is my "go-to" horror game; it's simply the best. You really can't go wrong with any of resident evils (except 5, I hated the AI teammate and the xbox 360 controls).

As others have said, Condemned: Criminal Origins was a total sleeper hit that has such a unique flavor. It's hard to describe but it is definitely influenced by the movie "Seven" but even darker and with a constant sense of being alone and surrounded.

Amnesia is pretty good as well. I really like how you are forced to run and hide; there are no weapons and the PC is a total wimp. Using the environment to conceal yourself from monsters can be more terrifying than facing them with a limited supply of weapons and ammunition, as is the modus operandi of most horror games.

Finally, the Shalebridge Cradle. Thief: Deadly Shadows isn't a horror game per se. It is first and foremost a stealth game; but, it has the most finely crafted horror level in all of gaming imo (Shalebridge Cradle). If you can get a copy of T:DS, by all means go for it.
