You kind of described perfectly Death Note, have him watch that, or a little less on the mainstream side Kino's Journey... No just show him Death Note

Gantz is a grimey anime. Or if thats a bit too intense just go for some full metal alchemist, I could watch that all day long.

I second Gungrave, the first episode might be a deal breaker what with the giant undead cowboy gunslinger thing going on but as soon as it jumps into the mafia based backstory it starts making more sense and is at all times awesome.

I'm a bit surprised nobody mentioned Claymore yet.

This might be something of a challenge.

My boyfriend does not like anime. He has never seen even one episode*, but he's adamant that he can't stand it, anyway. He says he finds it too weird, with the big eyes and exaggerated expressions. He also knows that many of them suffer from a lot of filler, and this is a HUGE deterrant.

I'd love to get him into some anime. I know he'd love Cowboy Bebop, but I'm worried that Ed would scare him off for being the bundle of anime-ish-ness that she is. I also think he'd quite like Fullmetal Alchemist, but I think the whole show is just a touch too anime-ish for him to get into just yet.

So basically, I'm looking for intelligent, exciting anime that are low on filler. They need to have an artstyle that is maybe just a little more western, or that at least has eyes that aren't two-thirds of the characters' faces. Ideally, they'd be well dubbed, too.

Some other things he likes, for inspiration:

- Star Wars
- A Song of Ice and Fire
- Pulp Fiction
- The Sopranos
- WoW

Any help would be greatly appreciated!

*We watched Grave of the Fireflies together, and I don't think he minded it.

EDIT: For anyone who wants to know why, or wants to tell me to stop being a pushy girlfriend or obnoxious fangirl or whatever else:

Try Black Lagoon and Death Note. And perhaps Monster.

I would recommend Code Geass, it has a pretty great story, and every episode is relevant to the main plot. Also your Bf has excellent tastes if he likes star wars and a song of ice and fire(i only just got into it myself, but so far its excellent).

vampire hunter D. As far as I know maybe like 2 Vampire Hunter movies and both aren't very exaggerated or weird.

Elfen Lied, head ripping, psychotic violence as the first 10 minutes.
while that is the case it also has a brilliant soundtrack, moral and story
I was thinking about adding that but I don't know if the guys looking for an intelligent epic or just mindless violence.

Jin-Roh.
One of the best animes there is.
And classics like Akira, Lodoss, Cowboy Beebop, almost anything from Studio Ghibli, Ghost in the Shell, etc. and M.D.Geist(^^) are always fun to watch...

Hellsing Ultimate.

My friend really doesn't like Anime, at all, but even he was hooked by the sheer awesome/epicness of that series.
