Well Ghibli movies are always a good idea.
Studio Ghilbli is the japanese version of Pixar, insanely awesome but not manly in any way...

I suggest (like my previous comment) in getting MD Geist, with an all meat pizza, to really hammer home the manliness.
and the heads of Pixar and Ghibli are great friends :)

Elfen Lied, head ripping, psychotic violence as the first 10 minutes.
while that is the case it also has a brilliant soundtrack, moral and story

If he's into his computer games get him to try the Devil May Cry episodes or Final Fantasy VII: The Last Order - basically the end of Crisis Core but in more detail from ShinRa's side.

But if not then we advise; Saiyuki, Trinity Blood and Blood+ and for you to avoid The Ouran High School Host Club - it's too much like you discribed - and Vampire Kinghts - for a bit at least.

i think that cowboy bebop is a good idea, it does not have all those annoying facial expressions that others like bleach do. i myself really enjoy it and have watched it from an early age. but one of the big problems with what your are asking is that anime is predominately what your boyfriend does not like. so i think that it would be a good idea to think of an alternate form of entertainment other than anime. american made animes' are just not as good or popular as there overly dramatic counterparts over seas. so i think that it would be a good idea to think that one over.

maybe think about comic books or stamp collecting, that is actually fun...

(that is a joke)

If he likes trashy action movies with cheesy story he should check out Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann.
(TTGL is a great show but that is really the closts western thing I can parallel it with)

Cowboy Bebop. Ghost in the Shell is another possibility as well, though i'd try Bebop first. Ed isnt THAT bad... its just one crazy kid in an otherwise generally serious show.

Just to add to the votes, Trigun and Death Note.

I'm surprised your boyfriend doesn't like anime. Is he religious or something?

Wait, seriously? Baccano! has only been mentioned ten times? And you guys are cool with that?

MADNESS!

It's really good. Crazy action, a lovable cast, awesome writing, setting that accurately depicts the time period and location, Isaac and Miria, I'm frothing at the mouth this show is so good I'm frothing at the mouth.

In a way, it's a bit like Death Note in that you've got a simple premise with a small supernatural element that makes it really sing. Death Note's a suspenseful detective whodunnit which just so happens to have a magic killer book. Baccano! is a Tarantino-esque story about 1930s gangsters which just so happens to have an elixir of eternal youth.

It doesn't overstay its welcome, either. Thirteen episodes to see the conclusion of the main events of the story, with another three episodes to wrap up the romance between two of the characters. Very satisfying all round.

Death Note is greatly voiced and low on Filler, but I don't recommend that. Dragonball Z Kai has no filler as far as I am aware (I haven't watched it as IT'S NOT IN THE UK!), but I guess that's not great for a starter Anime.

The only Anime I have watched which does not have Exaggerated expressions would be RIN: daughters Of mnemosyne. It's deep, great and at only 6 episodes, has no filler, and since it's meant to be realistic, has no exaggerated expressions, BUT, this contains alot of Blood, and if he's still okay with that it contains even more Sex, and not just that, Lesbian sex and rape. Nothing is shown besides the breasts, but it depends whether or not he wants that, or, even more important, you want him to watch that.

If you are okay with that, then I highly recommend it.

Calumon: Digimon Tamers is good, and it is pretty low on Filler, sort of.

Jack: Mid way through, yes it does stretch out a bit. A fair bit. In fact, the whole 12 Deva thing was pretty much filler. Yeah, not for his first.

I got my mum hooked on FMA by getting her to watch the first episode, that thing's just epic.
Need to get around to watching Brotherhood, too...

One of my personal favourites? Now and Then, Here and There.
Starts off like a Miyazaki (young boy gets magically whisked away to another world with a mysterious girl) and ep 1 probably embodies everything your guy hates in anime, but all that changes (drastically) from ep 2. He gets captured by the military police and it goes from magical adventure to gritty wartime exposé in the space of about 20 minutes. Very powerful.

Also, 13 episodes and practically no filler at all (after ep 1).

Finally, playing wow but shying away from anime, I just had to dig this up:

Giving some more votes for Code Geass and Black Lagoon (especially the first season). Also Claymore or Gunslinger girl might be good.
