Corrupting his brains with stuff he doesn't like. Sounds you are going to force him to like it.

One girl suggested I should at least watch one show and that'd be final.

Randomely I picked up Full Metal Panic. Has awesome mech battles and a story, no buttury love stuff that bores me to hell. I watched every show and it will remain my only anime.
I like how the guy with the anime avatar calls anime appreciation a corruption. :p Seriously though, I'd never force him to like anything. I personally really liked Fruits Basket, but I know that there's no way in hell he will ever, ever like anything remotely similar to that. I'd never try. But what Star Wars fanboy should go through his life without trying a sci fi anime?

I just find it sad that he can't get past an art style in order to enjoy a good story, and would like to try to help him past that prejudice. Don't you worry. We've been a couple for three years, so I'm not trying to change him. And yes, I do have his consent.
Ive seen a few ppl with anime or jrpg avatars go off against anime or jrpgs, its quite odd, Id suggest going with outlaw star for a series or anything my miuzaki as a movie, like spirited away or princess mononoke, even my dad likes those and he doesnt even like western animation.
Gunsmith cats might be another good one to start him out with, takes place in detroit and its a short series, Id love to say flcl but I have a feeling that might be too strange for a neophyte, oh hellsing would probably also be a good one.

I'm not really an anime person myself, but the few that I have liked in the past were:

Berserk (definately Berserk! I love Berserk), Princess Monoke (first one I ever watched, was actually pretty good) and Hellsing (Nazi Vampires and gore, it kills time).

Take these suggestions or leave them as you will.

Cowboy Bebop was my first anime. It's good because the characters are most definitely American, and there is no real strong plot. In fact, you could show him the episodes in a random order and he probably wouldn't realize.

After Bebop, give him a little Japanime. My personal recommendation is Bleach, but your choice is yours.

Death note is pretty awesome. A cross between a thriller and supernatural mystery. It's good and great fun to watch from beginning to end.

Failing that, try Bleach. It's like Star Wars...very little but there's epic sword battles so that's a plus.

I highly recommend Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex. Very mature, no "big eyes silliness" that he wants to avoid, and definitely something that will make him think. I've seen cowboy bebop tossed around a lot. I recommend that one as well, but Ed may be a turn off, so I'd stick with GITS for now. Death Note is also fantastic and Code Geass if he doesn't seem to want to dive into the philosophical implications of what someone's soul entails.

Elfen Lied is truly the best anime I have ever seen. I have found few other animes that have held my attention so well.
I liked Elfen Lied at first, but in retrospect I think I've grossly overated it. I liked the overall humans-are-bastards-to-everyone-who-is-different tone, but I really hated the moe Nyu parts: in my opinion they missed the mark completely. I still like the flashbacks of Lucy's past though.

Black Bible.

Good family fun.
If that doesn't convince him...

I fully recommend Monster. It is awesome! Hell, being written by Urasawa Naoki is practically a Seal of Guaranteed Awesome. It might be a little too hard on the beginner perhaps.

I'll try to think of some other good ones I've seen

I see multiple possibilities here.
A) You're a troll
B) You're someone who bases his opinions on a bare minimum of information
C) You've seen yaoi and liked it and to compensate for your perceived diminished masculinity you are now calling people names on the distinguished forums of the Escapist.
D) All of the above.

EDIT:

I case of Berserk, I think he'd better read the manga. The anime just doesnt cover enough of the story, the themes and is of course censored in comparison. They even left out one of the important parts of Guts childhood: him being sexualy abused by Donovan, I believe his name was.

Just get him to watch Miyazaki films. Spirited Away, Princess Mononoke etc.

I'd say they're your best bet.

I usually hate anime, but found that Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann kicked a$$ majorly. The spa episode was weird and pretty useless and one character is pretty much only there for fan service, but as a whole, the series was awesome and had about 2 episodes that could be classified as filler max.

Fooly Cooly was also pretty good, but being only 6 episodes long, will only last for about 3 hours.

Other then that, I hear Fullmetal Alchemist and Evangelien are good but I haven't seen either of them

Black Lagoon. Can't go wrong with that. Yakuza kind of anime. Lots of violence and harsh language. Perfect.

Also, Gantz. Awesome horror.

Edit: Battle Angel Alita. It's philosophical, violent, and has a post-apocalyptic setting.
Agreed, Black Lagoon is great.

Really, there is no one in this world I would not recommend Death Note and Code Geass to. Hardcore anime fans call them average but it's 2 animes that even non fans love and truly my 2 favorite. Would top that list with Gurren Lagann but it's harder to get into if he's not that much into anime.

Edit: Ninja love

Maybe he just isn't into anime? It really isn't for everyone, you know. If he says things like the art style and the exaggerated expressions bother him (I can sympathize with both) then anime probably just isn't his thing, and you should look for something else the two of you can enjoy together.

Seriously, anime fans, I mean this with all due respect, but anime isn't for everybody. Don't go insisting that it is. If he ever asks you to recommend, go nuts, but don't try and force him into it.
You really want a response to this? You got it.

I have been in a relationship with my boyfriend for three years. We have extremely similar tastes. I am, however, far more receptive to recommendations than he is. There are many TV shows and movies that I have sat down to and thoroughly enjoyed at his prompting. My boyfriend, on the other hand, is a man that is very, VERY set in his ways. He calls it "only settling for the best". I love the man dearly, but honestly, that's not it at all. He's just plain narrow-minded in this regard. It's hardly a big deal, but it's true.

Over the past three years, I can count the number of things he's listened to me about (in terms of games, TV shows, etc) on one hand. Each one of them has proven to be something he has loved, except one (the TV show Archer - I happily watch it alone). I am by no means a pushy woman. We do not lack for things to share or talk about, so I'm not functioning on desperation. I'm not even what you'd think of as an anime fan - just look at all the recommendations I've taken aboard. It's clear that I haven't seen that many. In fact, in the three years I've been with him, I've seen... Grave of the Fireflies. That's it.

The other day, though, I was thinking about Cowboy Bebop and how much I'd love to watch it again, since I still listen to the soundtracks regularly. I thought that it would be something my boyfriend would really enjoy, but I remembered how he said he doesn't like anime. Remember that he has not seen even one episode of one show. He simply formed an opinion (as he is wont to do) without giving it a chance. It can be very difficult to change his mind, though he is always grateful after I've made the effort.

My boyfriend does not just hate anime. He hates anything he doesn't already know. I don't love anime to bits (I actually dislike most of them), but I know that the animation style is just wrapping, and that the story can sometimes be surprisingly good. I just want to help open his eyes to knew things.

The other day, I told him I wanted him to try anime. Surprisingly, he actually said that he was beginning to trust my tastes, and would go for it. I simply want to know some likely titles so that I can sift through them until I find something I think we'll both enjoy.
Even so, i still agree with Grey_Focks. So he's set against anime. So what? Why try to get him to watch it, even if you think he will like it. It's his decision. If he doesn't want to, just leave him be.
Besides, it's quite possible he really doesn't like anime, even if he will watch a few. There are people that don't. I am disslike anime too. There is nothing wrong with that. My oppinion would be to just drop the whole thing, and stop trying to get him to watch anime.

Oh, and for the people that recommend that "drill thing": that is one of the stupidest, tackiest most ridiculous things i have ever seen. I think my disslike of anime has at least doubled because of that alone. So, i'm not sure that's something you should recommend to someone that does not like anime.

Black Lagoon. If any anime can turn him, its Black Lagoon. I don't like anime as a rule, but I still loved Black Lagoon.

BTW, in case I didn't mention the name...

Black Lagoon

Any Hayao Miyazaki movie. If he so much as questions the quality any of those movies, dump his tasteless ass.

If he likes Pulp Fiction, I'm gonna recommend Baccano. Its only 13 episodes long, has a epic conclusion, and some of the greatest characters in any anime. I'm not sure how the dub is, as I've only seen the subtitled version.

Give him something with moments of pure awesome. Something like Trigun, Death Note, S-CRY-Ed, Berserk, Code Geass, or Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood.

Later on, throw in something like Wolfs Rain.

[small] I suggest Code Geass for starters. It has everything essential to an anime newcomer. Action, deep story, and a small bit of romance. I used this show to get my friend into anime, and he absolutely hated anime before that.[/small]

I would suggest Welcome to the NHK. It is honesty formulated like a film more than an anime or, and it is quite fun to watch. You might also want to try the classics. Gundam is pretty good, though he might be thrown off a little by the style of the art.
