Hmm for no filler(and what's wrong with filler? unless you mean when they take 3-10 episodes on the events of one fight that doesn't raise the crazy/cool meter much during it or something to that effect.) or Anime Cuteness I'd say a few Anime movies then Like Vampire Hunter D or maybe Cowboy Bebops Movie or oh! Maybe Samuri Champloo

Hellsing is pretty good, and Vampire Hunter D: Bloodlust both stay off the huge eyes thing (although I think a few parts of Hellsing do it for a moment), and features a lot of action. Ghost in the Shell is another good one with eye proportions that are sensible. Afro Samurai might be a really good one to start him with if he's familiar with Samuel L. Jackson.

I know a lot of people are recommending Death Note but that show was a little slow for me.

Regardless of what you pick, good luck. I hope it turns out well.

Death note. It's how most people get into it.

If that doesn't work appeal to his childhood with dragon ball, pokemon and digimon.

What no that's a terrible idea. MOST INSANE ANIME I'VE EVER WITNESSED.

There are a lot of animes I like, and I was introduced to them through Studio Ghibli. They are all quality shows which tend not to be too outlandish for the uninitiated. I particularly enjoyed Nausicaa. Movies make for a low-commitment experience, unlike shows, which can draw entire days of time. He'd probably be most comfortable with this.

But.... if you want to acclimate him slowly to an anime show, perhaps try an Anime/Western hybrid: Avatar the Last Airbender. I just finished watching the show recently, which may indicate I'm biased, but it is chock full of cool-looking fight scenes (perfect for the Star Wars lover, assuming he <3s the special effects), a great cast of characters, and a fun undercurrent of anime-craziness. It technically is Western animation but with enough anime-y stuff thrown in I would classify it as anime-lite. Seems perfect for a transition. Worth mentioning it's 3 20-episode seasons long, and every episode is relevant to the main story (no filler).

They need to have an artstyle that is maybe just a little more western, or that at least has eyes that aren't two-thirds of the characters' faces. Ideally, they'd be well dubbed, too.

Some other things he likes, for inspiration:

- Star Wars
- A Song of Ice and Fire
- Pulp Fiction
- The Sopranos
- WoW

Any help would be greatly appreciated!

[HEADING=1] THE BOONDOCKS [/HEADING]

This helps people get into anime.

This might be something of a challenge.

My boyfriend does not like anime. He has never seen even one episode*, but he's adamant that he can't stand it, anyway. He says he finds it too weird, with the big eyes and exaggerated expressions. He also knows that many of them suffer from a lot of filler, and this is a HUGE deterrant.

I'd love to get him into some anime. I know he'd love Cowboy Bebop, but I'm worried that Ed would scare him off for being the bundle of anime-ish-ness that she is. I also think he'd quite like Fullmetal Alchemist, but I think the whole show is just a touch too anime-ish for him to get into just yet.

So basically, I'm looking for intelligent, exciting anime that are low on filler. They need to have an artstyle that is maybe just a little more western, or that at least has eyes that aren't two-thirds of the characters' faces. Ideally, they'd be well dubbed, too.

Have him watch Basilisk, it's violent and is without any of the kiddy elements of anime.

Hmm...does he like giant robots?
Then time for....ROBOTECH
If he doesn't like that, there's the almost anime that they did on the halo franchise.
There's also afro samurai or Death Note.
But seriously, pick Robotech. Giant transforming robots fighting aliens who also have giant robots, all with normal humanoid characters. The bad guys might blow up the moon at a point, forget if that's from another show...

i would recommend Full metal alchemist (not brotherhood version) it is well developed and not too overwhelmingly anime, and the dub version. i would also recommend Dragonball kai which doesnt have the filler episodes and doesnt drag on as much as dragonball z.

You can't go wrong with Cowboy Bebop: Its got a short story (only 26 episodes), well thought out characters characters, amazing music, also its got a maturity to it where it can be serious without being too melodramatic and yet still has the time to play around and have fun. hope that helps.

Another couple of things you can try are:
The Studio Ghibli movies (someone posted Princess mononoke before)
And of course Death Note

Death Note was my gateway anime, but if he likes Pulp Fiction go for Baccano. It's like Pulp Fiction meets Highlander.

Evangelion is a masterpiece, but I wouldn't call it a good gateway series. Both Eva and FLCL are better after you're already into it. They certainly won't help convince him that anime isn't weird. Gurren Lagaan is absolutely spectacular, though it doesn't really get amazing until about the halfway point. Baccano is straight up awesome from beginning to end.

Also, everything by Ghibli, and, if he's down with a little Mindscrew everything by Satoshi Kon is amazing. Perfect Blue will certainly show him not all anime is for kids. Paprika is just a blast to watch, and Tokyo Godfathers is insanely good.

Cowboy Bebop.
MAYBE Big O.
Those are about it when it comes to anime I can stand.
And even Big O gets iffy at times.
Cowboy Bebop is awesome all the way through.

Baccano(mutha effin) Baccano, its only 13 episodes long each episode is brilliant, the english dub is fantastic, the characters don't make alot of over the top faces. its set in the 1941-1943 its really good and it sounds right up your alley.

EDIT: honorable mentions

Code Geass
Death note
Trigun(there are alot more anime style things here)
Full metal alchemist(regular or brotherhood there both good)
welcome to the NHK

Just introduce him to Hayao Miyazaki.Everyone loves him.

And Berserk could be something that he would enjoy. It's what would be called "Classic" anime in the modern times. And the DUB is good,if not better then the sub.

I know you mentioned he would like Cowboy Bebop so why not try getting him into it? Ed doesn't show up until the show is mostly established already, so if he really likes it he should continue to like it even after Ed shows up.

Samurai Champloo might also interest him. It was my first real anime and I loved it. Code Geass has also been mentioned and whenever I recommend an anime, Code Geass has to mentioned. If he likes giant robots, giant guns, giant swords, or giant RTS's you can't pass it up.

I don't get it, if he doesn't like it, you shouldn't force it on him. It's perfectly fine if you just want to get him into something you enjoy, but if he doesn't, you can't.

Despite what your mothers and grandmothers have told you since you were born, you can't change a man. No matter how much nagging or sex-droughts you throw at him.

OT: You obviously need to show him some Dragon Ball, or Z. Either one.

Cowboy bebop for some classics.

If he is smart though and can keep up with a fast paced story - baccano, really, realy great anime. And short, what is a plus for neewbie anime watchers.
