I don't normally post in these kind of topics (honestly, I'm bit sick of them), but I'll bite just this once.
Anime's that are worth your time
Darker than black - Season 1 - Great story, and it even manages to avoid most anime clichés, and tropes (such as a old guy as one of the main characters). Defiantly one of my favourites. Also, the episodes are broke into little story arcs, which makes the plot less confusing, and easier to digest. I never watched season 2, but i hear it's nothing like the first season, and it's suppose to be terrible.
The melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya - Season 1 - The true definition of a guilty pleasure for me. Funny, zany, and well over the top. This is the slice of life genre at it's very best. To be honest, it's not for everyone (and it's understandable that it has a lot of haters), but give it a chance, and you might be suckered into it's world, and of it's crazy characters.
Elfen Lied - It does a lot wrong, terrible english dubbing, two dimensional characters, and overly excessive violence, and nudity (Watch the first five minutes of the first episode to see what I'm talking about). However that makes it ever more surprising that it's one of the best anime's I've ever seen. The reason for that being it's subject matter, and it's thought provoking storyline. which will make you laugh, cry, or be in total shock. It's not a flawless masterpiece (like some people would have you believe), but with all it's flaws considered it is very much worth watching.
Visions of Escaflowne - One anime that isn't talked about very much, and it is rather sad, because it is brilliant. The storytelling is gripping, and the whole love triangle within it is well done (which for a anime is quite the shock to the system). Plus, medieval mechs, you seriously can't go wrong with that. It also has one of the best opening songs ever made.
Slayers - A truly underrated anime if there ever was one. A funny anime based in a dungeons, and dragons like setting. Even though the story isn't really all that special, it does boast some of the most diverse characters in any anime I've ever watched. It is well worth watching all the seasons of the Slayers (Slayers/Next/Try/Revolution/Evolution R), which sadly can't be said for a lot of anime.
Higurashi no naku Koro ni (roughly translates to when the cicadas cry) - On the offset you would mistaken this as a slice of life anime (AM I KAWAII! DESU?), due to it's cutesy characters, and it first impressions of a cute (and rather tame) anime. However as the episodes go on, it warps into something that resembles something out of a 18 rated horror film. With a deep, Mature, and involving plotline, with twist a plenty. It might make your brain hurt (especially in the later episodes when their's twists, and holes every five seconds), but this is one brain hurt that is well worth seeing through. Perfectly dark, twisted, and exceptionally well done.
Welcome to the NHK - A very unique, and thought provoking anime, which is rather a rarity in this day, and age. In fact, it's the only anime to ever make me cry, due to it's story of a loner trying to find his place in the world (which hits rather too close to home for some people, including me). Well worth watching, but it does feel like the anime is over far too soon, and it's overall conclusion is bitter sweet at best.
