Considering your preferences: Fooly fucking Cooly (7 eps.) is the answer.
Try Cowboy bebop and Samurai Champloo too. (25 eps)
Hellsing Ultimate is good.(Ongoing, 7 eps. atm)
Rin, daugthers of Mnemosyne was an interesting watch too. (ca. 6 eps.)
Welcome to the NHK is very good. (13 eps.)
Higurashi no naku koro ni. (20 something eps.)

As for things you should watch, despite it being "too Japanese":
Clannad and Clannad after story (48 eps.). Seriously, just go watch it. Now.
Azumanga daioh. (20 eps. I think)

Top 3 non-shounen (but still awesome) -

Bakuman
Bakuman is a shonen...

I'm gonna go ahead and recommend Hikaru no Go, whilst not exactly fitting your standards I feel it is still a good story.

Katanagatari.

You're not missing out if you ignore Haruhi, Bleach, Naruto, etc for a while. Katanagatari is another matter. It is in its own league, in the same way that TTGL is in its own league.

Well, I'm currently watching Gankutsuou: The Count of Monte Cristo. The visual style takes a bit of getting used to (it's reminiscent of something you would see on an acid trip), but I quite like it thus far.

Basically, it's Alexandres Dumas set in 5053.

Fullmetal Alchemist Brotherhood
Cowboy Bebop
Trigun
Samuri Champloo
Mushishi
Haruhi
also, if your enjoying Naruto, check out Bleach, One piece and Katekyo Hitman Reborn. All three are basically your typical superpower shounen series like Naruto

Here are some movies you will probably enjoy, no need to limit yourself to TV series.

1. Spiited Away
2. Princess Mononoke
3. Nausicaa of the Valley of the Wind
4. Castle in the Sky
5. Howl's Moving Castle

If you want something that doesn't have action in it:

1. My Neighbor Totoro
2. 5 Centimeters Per Second
3. The Girl Who Leapt Through Time
4. Graves of the Fireflies.

For TV Series - go watch Cowboy Bebop. I would recommend Legend of the Galactic Heroes, however that is quite lengthy.

I say you check out Welcome to the NHK, it's ridiculously funny, depressing and at times heartwarming. It's also the best anime to come out in recent years. Quite compact as well, doesn't drag on for too long.

1. Full Metal Alchemist: Brotherhood
2. Death Note
3. Black Lagoon
4. Elfen Lied

All animes I watched in order of my liking. Death Note got a little worse after N died but it was still watchable.

Excel Saga is the only one I've seen all the way through. I've only watched a few episodes of other things, and I'd watch more except I'm turned off most of it by...

...well, I've already said why on a few other threads. Including one of my own.

I digress, though. If you're into comedy-based anime, particularly those based around gags, Excel Saga will keep you going for as long as it takes you to watch 26 episodes.

I don't normally post in these kind of topics (honestly, I'm bit sick of them), but I'll bite just this once.

Anime's that are worth your time

Darker than black - Season 1 - Great story, and it even manages to avoid most anime clichés, and tropes (such as a old guy as one of the main characters). Defiantly one of my favourites. Also, the episodes are broke into little story arcs, which makes the plot less confusing, and easier to digest. I never watched season 2, but i hear it's nothing like the first season, and it's suppose to be terrible.

The melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya - Season 1 - The true definition of a guilty pleasure for me. Funny, zany, and well over the top. This is the slice of life genre at it's very best. To be honest, it's not for everyone (and it's understandable that it has a lot of haters), but give it a chance, and you might be suckered into it's world, and of it's crazy characters.

Elfen Lied - It does a lot wrong, terrible english dubbing, two dimensional characters, and overly excessive violence, and nudity (Watch the first five minutes of the first episode to see what I'm talking about). However that makes it ever more surprising that it's one of the best anime's I've ever seen. The reason for that being it's subject matter, and it's thought provoking storyline. which will make you laugh, cry, or be in total shock. It's not a flawless masterpiece (like some people would have you believe), but with all it's flaws considered it is very much worth watching.

Visions of Escaflowne - One anime that isn't talked about very much, and it is rather sad, because it is brilliant. The storytelling is gripping, and the whole love triangle within it is well done (which for a anime is quite the shock to the system). Plus, medieval mechs, you seriously can't go wrong with that. It also has one of the best opening songs ever made.

Slayers - A truly underrated anime if there ever was one. A funny anime based in a dungeons, and dragons like setting. Even though the story isn't really all that special, it does boast some of the most diverse characters in any anime I've ever watched. It is well worth watching all the seasons of the Slayers (Slayers/Next/Try/Revolution/Evolution R), which sadly can't be said for a lot of anime.

Higurashi no naku Koro ni (roughly translates to when the cicadas cry) - On the offset you would mistaken this as a slice of life anime (AM I KAWAII! DESU?), due to it's cutesy characters, and it first impressions of a cute (and rather tame) anime. However as the episodes go on, it warps into something that resembles something out of a 18 rated horror film. With a deep, Mature, and involving plotline, with twist a plenty. It might make your brain hurt (especially in the later episodes when their's twists, and holes every five seconds), but this is one brain hurt that is well worth seeing through. Perfectly dark, twisted, and exceptionally well done.

Welcome to the NHK - A very unique, and thought provoking anime, which is rather a rarity in this day, and age. In fact, it's the only anime to ever make me cry, due to it's story of a loner trying to find his place in the world (which hits rather too close to home for some people, including me). Well worth watching, but it does feel like the anime is over far too soon, and it's overall conclusion is bitter sweet at best.
