I'm looking for an anime to watch, and I figured this was as good a place to ask as any. I just got finished with Cowboy Bebop and while it was very good, it wasn't really what I was looking for.

I'm looking for something that is a bit more long-running (As opposed to something I could watch in two days, like Bebop).

I'd also prefer something a bit more lighthearted (something in the vein of Dragonball would be nice) and with a little more focus on story and continuity than Bebop.

So, any recommendations?

Long running, I recommend Full Metal Alchemist (50ish eps plus a movie at the end).
If you were interested in another short one that you could watch in two days, I highly recommend Samurai Champloo.

Oh, by long running I mean in the 200+ ep. range, but I'll definitely put those on my "to-watch" list.

Also, is the Cowboy Bebop movie worth checking out?

I echo Death Note. Bleach is also pretty good.

There's also the Ghost in the Shell series if you liked the movies and Claymore though it's not very long.

Long-running with plot?

Full Metal Alchemist

Gundam Wing (that's my personal favorite Gundam story, there are several of them)

Death Note

Oh, but those aren't necessarily light-hearted. What do you mean, exactly, by light-hearted? Like, Axis Powers Hetalia is a comedy about WW2 and the episodes are short (five minutes long) and spazzy. But Card Captor Sakura is very story-oriented--as is anything by CLAMP--but it's sugary sweet.

Um....oh! hey, there we go, Ranma 1/2. That's a fighting-comedy with a bizarre and fun story and it ran for a long time but it is an older series--like, it was on in the 90s--but it's totally worth watching. But it's kind of hard to find sometimes.

Code Geass. Only 2 seasons, but feels longer with the plot line..

Personally, I don't like many animes with a "Dragon Ball story" (A seemingly never-ending plot line in which after defeating an enemy in one season, a stronger enemy appears)

Death Note is another one, but I recommend Code Geass more.
(I expect MaxTheReaper to comment on this, maybe less to reply to mine, even less to say I ninja'd him...)

uhm... off the top of my head I got Ruroni Kenshin and Yu Yu Hakasho. Proly misspelled one of those... They're both somewhat old but they're comedy with fighting. Yu Yu is a lot like DBZ methinks, but I haven't been able to find a good sub of it T_T Good luck finding one, and tell me if you do, cause I really wanna finish that series up ><

If I were an ass, I'd say the [http://www.escapistmagazine.com/forums/read/18.123703#2524825] search [http://www.escapistmagazine.com/forums/read/18.121823#2432255] bar [http://www.escapistmagazine.com/forums/read/18.110799#1927080] is an excellent anime.

But I'm not, and love recommending things, so here we go!

School Days TV: Starts out as an innocent lovey-dovey anime, switches themes halway through to become a twisted horror story. Not for those who can't stand characters acting stupid a lot.

Heroic Age: A good sci-fi story with some nice action sequences.

Bokurano: Giant robot anime with a chilling twist: you don't get to pilot the robot without paying a massive price.

Busou Renkin: Nice action, good characters, and funny dialouge. Shounen anime.

To Aru Majutsu No Index: Nice plot, and a good lead character who ISN'T all-powerful.

Chaos Head: The main character is a wimp (and it IS annoying) but this anime is a decent one. Twisted, to say the least.

I would recommend two which will come a lot in this thread, that being Death Note and Full Metal Alchemist. If your more open minded I'm currently watching a romance comedy series called Love Hina which I'm really enjoying and would recommmend also.

Bleach, Naruto, and Inuyasha are the longest running I know of. I've only really watched Inuyasha and Naruto, and it's feels very real because unlike short series (I consider 50 short, and 26 ridiculous) it's like you're right there because of the pace, it's more everyday. But here come the anti-Naruto (and other on-going series as well) elitists to rain on the parade of things beyond their comprehension. Which is why, in advance, RASENGAN!

*edit*
Although it's been said a lot, Death Note and Code Geass are also very good, as well as Full Metal Alchemist. Although personally, I don't like alchemy. They just kind of skipped the time in between the beginning of the fight and the time it would take to draw an extremely complicated pentogram thing. I hate ridiculous things like that.

Rurouni Kenshin (Samurai X) gets pretty crappy after the first 3 seasons. DBZ can be extremely convoluted, and Yu Yu Hakusho is just strange.
Code Geass.. that anime pains me. How could something that goes through CLAMP's hand be so stupid (granted they only did character design)? It's so drawn out, and the entire second season felt so artificial. I classify this genre as the drama queen genre.

If you're not after some specific genre and don't mind hunting down some ultra rare stuff, I would recommend:
Anything from the El Hazard series (kudos if you find one with the black-haired Efreeta. PM me as well, because I'm looking for that version).
Full Metal Panic -- not very long, but very good anime. Fumoffu will blow your mind if you're an anime fan.
Card Captor Sakura/Tsubasa Chronicle/XXXHolic - You would be surprised how action-packed a magical girl anime can be.
Nadia and the Secrets of Blue Water--true classic.
NHK ni yokoso - interesting drama-comedy, with a bit of psychology thrown in for a good mix.
Kekkaishi - a family of demon slayer, with a lot of twists. The structure and characterization in this anime follows NOTHING of the convention. It's a great change of pace when you feel jaded.

Beserk, a fantastically over the top medievil epic, with blood guts and hilarious bloopers at the end.
