Magna Carta 2. While not technically a jrpg (it's Korean) it has the same pacing. Good story and fun to play. The combat is great.

Played it and had a good time. I enjoyed it, but I think I took some of the enjoyment out by downloading the weapons DLC as it made the game incredibly easy. But, otherwise was a solid enjoyable game. I also own Tears of Blood that I got for like 10 bucks that I need to try out.

Infinite Space. It is pure awesomeness. In space.
This is one I have always looked at and considered but haven't bought it yet. I've been on the fence about it. I should get it and try it out. Thanks for the suggestion

I am currently playing Breath of Fire 4 for PS1. I'm early into the game so don't want to recommend it too strongly, but the sprite art is absolutely beautiful.

When it comes to JRPGs, if you're into them it's hard to tell what you'd consider obscure. Obviously the Persona games are great, and I want to play more SMT games. Again, I don't think anyone would call it obscure but Skies of Arcadia (DC or Gamecube) was very enjoyable.

Also, it doesn't really seem like a straight JRPG, but Vagrant Story was really good fun. Taxing, but fun.
Funny thing is I own all 5 Breath of Fire games but actually never completed any of them. 4 is likely the one I will start out with though. I got about 8 hours into it and got sidetracked for some reason or the other. I'll eventually give it another go.

Skies of Arcadia was great, I own the Dreamcast version.

I got Vagrant Story as well. I really enjoyed it but it has been so long I don't remember much about it. Might be worth a replay.

Eternal Sonata? 360 - damn good combat system too, like a mix between star ocean and turn based
I did enjoy the combat in this game and its overall concept. I just didn't really enjoy the story as much as I thought I would. It was a solid game but what really ruined it for me was doing the bonus dungeon. I found it very aggravating and got lost in it many times. It sort of left a bitter taste in my mouth after finishing the game.

Suikoden. Better yet, Suikoden II. Both are PlayStation games, but II cannot be bought now unless you are willing to spend a small fortune. I am lucky enough to own a copy, and it's still one of my favorite games. When the PSN comes back online, you can download Suikoden and see if you like it.
I am fortunate to own both Suikoden and Suikoden 2. Glad as I see that S2 can go for upwards of 150 dollars. Loved those games as well as 3 and 5. I have 4, Tactics, and Tierkreis which I heard aren't as good as the others but I still need to play through them.
Don't listen to people regarding Tierkreis. I put it off for ages because people said it wasn't very good, but I was pleasantly surprised. I think the dislike seems to come from the fact they aren't using the traditional suikoden names for things, the rune system is slightly different too. I'm certainly enjoying it as much as I enjoyed 3 and 5, anyway.

4 isn't terrible either, for me it was mainly the sailing which bored me. If you can get over that, the game is still pretty good.

Haven't seen it in this thread and if you're willing to go into the back-catalog of PS1 games grab a copy of Legend of Dragoon. It's one of the hands down best JRPGs ever made.

Earthbound - Snes
Love Earthbound. I used to have the actual big box that came with the game and player's guide. Sadly I have no clue what happened to it =(. I recently played it on an emulator but I'd prefer to own the real deal.

I actually recently bought this about a year ago from a vintage game shop for about 40 bucks. Was worth every penny. For some reason or other I passed it up during the PS1 days, but I am glad that I finally played it and loved it.

How about Rhapsody: A Musical Adventure?

I haven't been able to get a hold of it (because I live in Europe and they never released it here), but it's supposed to be an early forerunner to the Disgaea games by the same developer.

There's also GrimGrimoire (not really an RPG, has RPG-like storytelling though)

Yggdra Union (also not really an RPG, but it has some RPG-like qualities).

I recall renting Rhapsody, which was my introduction to NIS. I really enjoyed it but didn't finish it. Is there a PSP version?

I have GrimGrimoire, but haven't gotten around to it yet.

As for Yggdra Union I got the free voucher from the PSP version of Knights in the Nightmare. Both games I need to play as well as Riviera.

I actually did play a little of Tierkreis to get a feel for it and I enjoyed what I played. I'll move it up on the priority list. I do want to try out 4. I heard it is fairly short so even if I don't enjoy it as much as the other Suikoden titles it won't be too much of a time sink.

They ported it to the DS, I think. Haven't heard any news of a PSP version, unfortunately.

I'm guessing you've played most of NIS's games (ZHP, Phantom Brave, La Pucelle)?

I've played a few NIS games. I played La Pucelle and enjoyed it. Phantom Brave I bought awhile back but certain aspects of the game irritated me. Such as the phantoms having limited number of turns then vanishing. I never finished it. Have also yet to purchase Makai Kingdom or Soul Nomad. Probably a few others I can't think of.

As for ZHP, I looked it up and looks vaguely familiar. I will have to check that one out so thanks for the suggestion.
