Team Fortess 2..

It is simply the best game money can buy..

Also, if you are looking for a cheap and fun indie game eperience, i truly recommend Machinarium! The puzzles might be difficult, but damn that game has charm like no other..

EDIT: I forgot to mention Just Cause 2, loads and loadsa fun hours of gameplay there..
Its like GTA with parachute and grappling hooks..

For sinking hours of time, buy Minecraft and find a good server. (Or make one with friends!)

Excellent fun and not too system demanding. Well, a slight ram hog...

If you're looking for a strategy game, I'd say World in Conflict is pretty good.

Navyfield is a fun game to play from time to time. Not to mention NF is free.

I second all of these statements. Every game Mr Corpse here listed is brilliant.
I would recommend left4dead, or Command and Conquer 3 as well, I am still having fun playing all of the games mentioned in the post.

Get the Orange Box: Five games for thirty dollars, and one game (TF2) is... FUCKING AWESOME.

Magicka is 10 euro on Steam. Great game. Absolutely hilarious.

Be prepared for a few bugs though.

Morrowind. You'll never need to play another game for months. Years if you're lucky.

Most multi-platform games should be able to run quite well on a PC several years old.
After all, the current console gen is 6 years old, and were the equivalent of a mediocre PC back then.

However, Magicka has some very demanding system specs, especially the video card.

As in, WAY higher than ... say ... Bulletstorm.
