Escapist im disappointed tbh.

War3:TFT is arguably the most played rts ever and probably one of the best games overall.

Starcraft 2's campaign is amazing and fun and welcoming to complete and utter noobs like myself. I can't play multiplayer to save my life but the campaign I found fun and challenging.

The first Dawn of War: The Dark Crusade is very fun too.

Don't play SC2, you need a fucking monolith to play it.
I recommend the first one because it's more balanced, you can keep up with the story and very easy to run.
i have a 5 year old computer i run SC2 just fine on medium grapics
you dont need a monolith to play it and it is very balanced(blizz published the win/loss rate for each machup there within 5% of even win loss)

id say any total war if you actually like a game that requires a bit more brains rather than the "select all units to attack" kind of rts like starcraft 2 and age of empires. But then thats why the games aint too popular, its not something you could just jump into but it all depends on taste really.
Damn right. First time playing Rome: Total War, you feel damn invincible sending a cavalry charge at the enemy until they get cut to shreds by the enemy frontline.

I have been itching to play an RTS for a while, and I recently found an old Age of Empires game, the Age of Kings. After going through hours of building up my civilization and making a huge hord of soldiers, I got screwed when my entire battle force were converted by monks and sent to attack my own keep.

Could someone recommend a fun, challenging RTS thats easy on noobs? Preferably without a standard unit for everyone that can turn 40 men against me?
Starcraft is the first thing that comes to mind

I have a 1 year old computer and on the lowest graphics its pretty chuggy, people told me to get a new graphics card, but I'm not that willing to spend 200 EURO for a single game.

starcraft or whatever Relic does(RTS-wise)
of supreme commander(not 2)
or it you are into stuff that involves a lot of management and less actual fight try the total war series(ideally starting with medieval2, still the best and dirt cheap right now)

Get anything with "Total War" in its name, despite the arguments about which one is the best, they haven't really made a particularly bad one. It's not 100% a true RTS per se, Real Time Tactics plus Turn Based Strategy I guess. The strategy and tactics are broken up into distinct phases and are both presented with an appropriate interface and you don't have to think of both at once. The tactics is cool since it tends to be large scale and really violent, it makes you feel like a big tough general sending thousands of men to their deaths.

Learning curve is interesting, it's complex but it isn't nuanced, once you figure out how something works, that's probably really how it works, nothing weird like monks, just steel and fire.

Pick a time period that interests you, Roman Republic, High Middle Ages, Sengoku period, Age of Discovery, Napoleonic wars are all covered with varying texture details and poly counts.

Well i have played a few RTSs in my days and i would recommend:

Starcraft 1-2
Company of Heroes
Rise of Nations
Any of the C&C games (Red Alert 2 and Tiberium Wars are my favorites though)
Age of Mythology

IMO starcraft 1 will always be the best RTS there is...so i would recomend trying that
It's brutal for noobs though.

Something like Company of heroes is easier than your traditional RTS, or you can try starcraft 2 which has better matchmaking (CoH is dieing). SC2 is good because of the massive amount of content out there that will make you improve, not to mention coaching and small level tournaments. I definitely recommend a tournament it is a huge amount of fun
Wait, CoH is easier then Starcraft for noobs?!
I dont know how its for you but every person ive met that have played both of these games agrees that CoH takes more skill to learn!

Do you mean SP or MP?
Cause if its MP then screw all the above

If you like building up an empire, then Rome: Total War and Total War: Shogun 2 are both perfect.

computer specs?

your graphics card may simply not have detected ram as that whould cause problems with outer games then just SC2(up-dating your drivers may help)
or you may have something wrong with your computer nothing from 1 year ago unless its a $300 junker should have problems with SC2 on low

The Lord of the Rings: The Battle for Middle-earth [http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Lord_of_the_Rings:_The_Battle_for_Middle-earth] is quite entertaining and not too complex. The game did some interesting things regarding base building (limited and streamlined but with interesting results). Avoid Battle for Middle Earth 2, all the interesting innovation from the first was left out and replaced with standard fps stuff.

Oh and I second the posters advocating Dawn of War, SoSE and Starcraft 1&2 (though for the last two I'm not so sure on the noob friendliness).
Really ner vod? I always thought BFME2 was more fun, the expansion in general. But yeah, the BFME games can be a blast, though I'm fairly sure they aren't for sale anymore, and they aren't as fun on single player. The servers went down at the beginning of the year iirc and what was left of the players went to other services, like gameranger and... tungle or something, can't remember what it was called. SW: Empire at War had fun space battles, and the galactic conquest allowed you to build a SSD, which was so big it took up, like, a quarter of the map. It's so damn satisfying to use, almost as fun as summoning a Balrog under your enemies army.

I'd recommend Company of Heroes, the best RTS there is at the moment. It's fun, throws away some more archaic and silly RTS conventions, and if you know what you're doing, you can easily beat most spam tactics and opponent might throw at you.

The community is solid and still going strong after 5 years, there are several channels casting games (Like this one : http://www.youtube.com/user/Propagandacast?feature=mhee), and a strong modding community as well.

Dawn of War 1 for RTS
Dawn of War 2 for RTT
StarCraft 2 for Attack move everything
Earth 2160 for depth but dead multiplayer
Command and Conquer for nostalgia
Halo Wars for babies and halo freaks

but from what you want I would suggest trying out the Dawn of War 1 demo
if you like it I would suggest getting Dark Crusade or Soul Storm (depending on if you want better balance, or more races.)

Battle for Middle-Earth 2 is also a pretty good one
