I've tried the searchbar, and stupidly enough, I didn't find anything similar at all.

The case is like this: me and a friend both like watching videos, be that movies or series. Lately we've been watching a lot of films together, but A) good movies are harder to come by and B) they usually last quite long - we don't always have 90-120 minutes straight on to spare. Which has lead to us coming up with the idea of watching series/shows instead.

We want to start on a show that'll interest us both, even though we aren't very picky (I've watched Sex and the City with her and she's watched Spartacus with me). We also want it to be a show that's completely new to both of us, so we can start from scratch together. Our only problem is, we have no idea what are possible good options. Any recommendations, Escapist?

Here is a list of stuff either one of us has already seen (in no particular order), to let you know more or less in what direction we're searching - even though, like I said, neither of us is really picky. (M)'s indicate it's a show that just I have (partially) watched, (H)'s indicate shows that just she has (partially) watched and (B) indicates shows we've both (partially) watched;

-Star Trek: Enterprise (M)
-Star Trek: Voyager (M)
-Sex and the City (B, but mostly H)
-Coupling (B, but mostly H)
-Two and a half men (H)
-Spartacus: Blood and Sand (B)
-Lost (M)
-Man Vs Wild (M)
-Band of Brothers & The Pacific (M)
-Heroes (B)
-Mock the Week (M)
-True Blood (H)
-South Park (H, funnily enough)
-Dexter (H)
-Desperate Houstwives (H)
-House (H, I think)
-The Tudors (H)
-Deadliest Warrior (M)
-Will & Grace (H)
-The Nanny (H)
-Fringe (H)
-Scrubs (B, a couple of random episodes)

The only thing left to mention is that we're looking for something 'interesting'. It doesn't *have* to be 'new and refreshing', as long as it keeps a bit of pace and isn't just flat out 'boring'. We've already gone through some more obvious choices (Prisonbreak, 24, Law and Order) and established that those probably wouldn't interest either of us enough.

TL;DR edition: Recommend me a good series to watch, Escapists!

Post away, folks!

Lets see... Two shows I've liked in past that aren't on that list are Boston Legal (Gotta love Danny Crane) and Big Bang Theory.

Boston Legal is about law firm in Boston. It's primary appeal has to be Danny Crane (played by william shattner)the greatest conservative lawyer of all time that now suffers from alhzimers or mad cow disease (the show seems to not be sure which sometimes) and Allen Shore a very over the top liberal lawyer. I think by second season (maybe earlier) they even add in the woman who played murphy brown and the guy who played Odo on deep space nine.

Big Bang Theory is sort of an everyday sitcom about these super genuis phsyisist geeks and there neighbor who is a waitress. It's hard to explain but it is pretty funny.

Watch modern family and Big bang theory. Just do it.
Any explanation for that? Perhaps a small summary of what they are about? Or at least what's so good about them?

You know, I'm doing this with my friend too.
Funnily enough, she got me into Gossip Girl. I'd say try that out.
This might not be a bad idea. I generally don't really mind 'girly shows' as long as they're amusing. I'll be sure to look that up.

I've seen that one fly around on these boards quite a bit, but I'm a bit... tedious about watching it? I've never quite understood what it's about, and why it's good. And then there's the fact that everybody and their moms seem utterly depressed over the horrible cliffhanger-ending of the show. Care to elaborate?

watch Fringe on fox you've probably seen commercials for it if you watch House on Fox. It's really sci-fi and one of my favorite shows.

If it's comedy you are after there are some badly overlooked gems out there. Red Dwarf (sci fi based sit com), Black Books (sit com about a book shop), Darkplace (Spoof horror series, supposed to have been made in the 80's but wasn't. It's genius)
If you want a sketch show, Big Train was possibly the greatest of all time..

Also if you want easy to watch reasonably quick witted american style comedy, How I met Your mother is one of the best i've seen recently.

You've not watched House or Dexter? You sicken me.

And take a guess at which long running science fiction series I'm going to recommend. ;)

I think you meant hesitant, not tedious. I'm bored about watching it? That doesn't make much sense...

Grammar nazi-ing aside, it's an incredibly funny/awesome space-western. Go watch it now.

Tedious? Don't you mean tentative? [sub]Sorry, English student[/sub]

But yes, you really should watch it. It's not what it's about, so much as who it's about. On the face of it, Firefly is a mildly low-budget sci-fi drama with Wild West overtones. In reality, it's written by Joss Whedon (Buffy The Vampire Slayer, Alien Resurrection, etc.) and he puts incredible amounts of personality, intelligence and humour into his shows. The ending wasn't so much a cliffhanger as hideously open-ended (the show was unexpectedly cancelled) but, luckily for you, the loose threads were wonderfully tied up by the subsequent film Serenity. Another plus is that it had a fairly brief run, so it's not as daunting a prospect as, say , Lost.

EDIT:

Dead Set. It really is unmissable. It's a 5 part zombie series, created by the always reliable Charlie Brooker. It's set in a zombie outbreak in Britain, where the only place left is...The Big Brother House. They try to hold out against the horde. Part dark comedy, part gory zombie horror, it's one of the wittiest, most exciting, and most nerve-wracking series's I've ever seen on television.
Seconding the hell out of this.

One thing I didn't realise about it was that the greedy TV executive character is played by the same guy who was the mild-mannered management guy in Severance. Only just twigged the other day.

Scrubs, Aqua Teen Hunger Force, Married with Children, any cartoon on Nickelodeon and Cartoon Network in the 90's are good ones.

That reminds me, I need to add Fringe to the list; she's watched part of it and said it goes a bit boring and standard after a bit.

Comedy, drama, thriller, sci-fi... Anything works, really, as long as it's interesting.

That said, thanks for all the replies, some of this stuff does look quite interesting. Keep 'm coming =)
