I recommend Doctor Who. Start from the Christopher Eccleston seasons to today. It's got everything i'd want in show: sci fi, drama, comedy, some romance, and English people. It's really a great time watching it if you don't mind the accents. It's one of the most amazing shows I've ever seen.

Also Firefly.

House is the great equalizer. Everyone loves House, from all age groups, all interests, never seen an exception. And, there's 6 seasons, so it will last you a while. Watch House, and you will be doing yourself a favor.

Another thing to add here is a bit of an underdog: Castle. Firefly is an obvious choice because it's quite simply really good, but mainly because it has insurmountable geek cred. And a major reason for that is none other then the great Nathan Fillion. The man is impossible not to like. And Castle is a show about him playing a mystery writer who teams up with a cop as research for his books, and they end up being a pretty good team. Yes, it's hardly void of cliches, and has some cheese factor to it, but that just ends up making it accessible. It may not be realistic, but manages to be ostensibly so, and the characters are all very likable. Its worth giving a shot, its on Hulu.

Also, as a runner up, and speaking of Joss Whedon, there's Dollhouse. It gets a mix bag of reviews, but if she's into Sci Fi, it's a show that has stuff to appeal to both typical gender tastes. Beginning is a bit slow, picks up in the middle of season 1, and then gets really good in season 2. Ive also seen it convert a few girls who are pretty meh about sci fi, so it's also worth a trip to Hulu.

The Office (I've only seen the American version, but I hear good things about the British version too). I'm working my way through all the episodes in order.

Friends. I've seen every episode in order. Great show.

I don't know if you'd be into Family Guy but... Family Guy.

I love The Office, and you have, have, HAVE to watch Seinfeld. Greatest sitcom of all time, in my opinion. I've also heard that Modern Family is good, but I haven't got around to watching it yet.

If either one of you is into Japanese cartoons, you should watch Death Note. Come to think of it, watch it even if you're just into suspense thrillers. It has a bit of supernatural elements and androgynous teen heroes, though, so heads-up just in case you hate that stuff.

the american office isn't nearly as good as it used to be. british office is great

I recommend How I Met Your Mother. It's got Neil Patrick Harris, that should be reason enough to at least try out an episode or two

Judge Judy.
I know what you're saying, but I really can't watch shows like that. If I wanted to see pure stupidity, Oprah or Dr. Phil generally don't do a bad job (though I'll give Dr. Phil *some* credit for not being a complete stereotype). When they start yelling, acting childish, stamping their feet and screaming that they are right, that's when it turns from amusing to downright annoying to me.

Man Vs. Food, Archer, If you can find it I also recommend MXC
I've actually watched Man Vs. Food, and I thought I was the only one. Funny to see it mentioned her. It was quite stereotypical, but it did amuse me. And got me hungry =P

Edit: As a general 'summary', I'm seeing a shitload of votes for Firefly, the Office and Big Ban Theory. I might look into those, though I'll bookmark the thread for later use once we finish with the initial badge of series. Thanks for the replies so far everyone.

Rome sounds somewhat interesting as well, as both me and her are fairly interested in roman culture/society. Afaik, anyway. What exactly is Rome about, if you will? Is it 'dramatic' politics and backstabbing or more of a 'gladiator goes miniseries' like Spartacus?

It follows the events that lead up to Ceasars betrayal and stabbing and then the fallout spills over into series 2.
It's basically like Gladiator meets character drama.Because its a series it develops the characters to a remarkable degree.

You wont be wasting your time checking it out.
