Hi everyone, Flames here.

With my second ever thread I thought I would address an issue that seems to come up everywhere on these fine forums. The love and hate of JRPGs. I have never played one (a demo of an early final fantasy) so I think I have a fairly unbiased outsiders view.

Here?s the deal. You guys recommend me a JRPG to play that you think will best represent the genre and I will play it and write an honest review for this page. This may take me some time as I have LOADS of work to do at the moment but I will give it a go.

Here are the conditions:

1. Must be on the PC
2. Must be below £10
3. I will not make an account on any pages or servers to play it (no online activation DLC)
Steam is fine though as I already have an account.

I have no idea when there will be any results but I will try to give it my honest opinion and evaluate it purely on its individual merits and the fun that I have with it.

So make your suggestions and let?s see where this goes.

So far I'm looking into trying Kingdom Hearts. I'll leave this thread until tomorow and see what recommendations I get then I'll pick the game with the most.

You're limiting yourself if you only want an anime style JRPG. *sweatdrop*

I would recommend Baldur's Gate to you but it seems not to be on your list. Sadly, I'm a Yank so I dunno the exchange rate of the Pound to Dollars. ;)

I do have fun with Torchlight but other than The Last Remnant, I can't think of many games released on the PC that's a JRPG.

Baldur's Gate Doesn't really look like a JRPG to me. As an outsider I dont know how to define a JRPG, so if Baldur's Gate is the game with the most recommendations (and it fits the other conditions) I'll play it and review it.

Also according to currency converter the exchange rate is £1 to $1.50313.

Download the ZSNES emulator and use it to play Final Fantasy VI (although keep in mind it's called Final Fantasy III in America) and Chrono Trigger. I'm sorry I can't give you any PC recommendations, but they are called "console RPGs" for a reason.

Hmm... So about $15-$20?

...

JRPGs are usually anything from Japanese game makers. They are usually linear with more focus on the story than anything else.

If you're looking for a Western RPG, I know more of those on the PC. Those would be Baldur's Gate, Neverwinter Nights, Fallout 1-2 (they should be in a bundle for ~12-15 Pounds.), or the previously mentioned Torchlight.

WRPGs have more emphasis on moral choices, and the stories are usually about the choices you make in some shape or form.

Barring that, the only games that are huge on the PC are Dragon Age, Mass Effect 1&2, Elder scrolls, or Diablo.

Errrmm... he said on the PC.

Boy, buddy... can't help you much on that one.
How about some free ones?
Maplestory, Zu online, Flyff?
Maplestory is ok. It's all grinding, but that's what most rpg's are.

JRPGs do tend to be console based. However Final Fantasy VII and VIII do exist for PC, but are a bit dated graphically. Baldur's Gate, or anything else from BioWare or Bethesda are WRPGs, because they're about all the Western World has to offer.

It would help if I knew a little more about what you want from a game as the best JRPGs tend to be those partially exploring more metaphysical concepts.

There are no JRPGs for PC under $10 that are currently available. You're kinda effed, Op.

I could suggest some for consoles, like Valkyira Chronicles for PS3; the Fire Emblem games; Blue Dragon. But the last JRPG-like game I can remember for PC is FFXI. Well, I guess The Last Remnant too, but that's not under 10 pounds.

These aren't Japanese, but they are older RPG games available on Steam:

Bard's Tale
Jade Empire

As others have said, you will have difficulty finding PC games that are JRPG. Now, if you wanted to test the waters and get a PS2 emulator, you would immediately have access to tons of PS2 JRPGS that are older and meet your price requirements. I'd like to recommend the Shadow Hearts series, if you go that route.

But if you're looking at strictly JRPGs on the PC, you will sadly not find that any available in English.

A JRPG on the PC? That's kind of a tall order, since the whole subgenre evolved in the way it did partly based on the limitations of consoles.

The only one that's coming to mind is Septerra Core (a Canadian JRPG, oddly), but I don't know how much it would cost or where to find it. Otherwise, I'd recommend downloading an emulator and a ROM of Final Fantasy 3 (it's really FF6, but it was released in English as 3).

you want... a PC JRPG under 10 sollars?

Uhhh, Puzzle Quest?

Seriously, that's a really esoteric order.

Gyromancer's on Steam for £11. I mean, it's almost under a tenner.

Might try to find a copy of FFVII for the PC, but good luck with that, you're probably better off sailing the seven seas, kissing wenches on the mouth and drinking rum.

That's because it's a WRPG.

I C Wat U Did Dere.

in other words, Finding FFVII on the PC legitimately is like searching for a balloon after releasing it into the infinite sky. The game wasn't even successful on the PC (although it was a pretty good port).

If you don't play many JRPGs then how do you know you'll even like most of them. Your opinion is still as biased as anyone elses!

Besides from my experience you need to play JRPGs a LOT to really get to the good part, and you sound as though you intend to review a lot. In conjunction with your lots of work you're going to be really busy, if anyone can actually find a JRPG on PC.

You're pretty much confined to the PC version of FF7 and emulators :p

<- Had a legitimate copy

Then my brother's girlfriend stole it and I never got it back :(

Tales of Symphonia on the gamecube, my buddy (who hates almost everything jrpg) loved the game hell the only reason i played was cause he suggested it, so if you find it play it, i highly recommend it
