I'm not looking for big hollywood blockbusters or famous cult classics like Evil Dead. I'm talking about movies that flew completely under my radar. Whether it was because they were before my time, or because it had a lower budget or whatever else.

I am looking for some obscure, but good movies.

I guess I'll start with Turkey Shoot. It is by no stretch of the imagination a good film, but it's one of those movies that is so bad and corny it ends up being enjoyable. A good movie to watch with some friends and some beer.

Interestingly enough, I watched both of those today.

OT: What genre are you looking for? It's really hard to recommend something without having something to narrow it down.

There are people who haven't seen Clerks?

Try this:

One of the best films I've ever seen. The preview is shit - it makes the film look like lighthearted comedic fun but it's not, it's totally fucking nasty, completely evil. Comedies don't get any blacker than this. Done with almost no budget too.

Literally any movie that you think is both obscure and enjoyable. The entire purpose of this thread is to expose myself to movies that I wouldn't have watched otherwise.

I actually dont know how obscure it is, but I had personally never heard of it before i saw it on HBO. Sunset Limited. It's literally just Samuel Jackson and Tommy Lee Jones sitting in a livingroom discussing god and suicide or an hour and a half. But by god, it is the most engaging movie I have seen all year.

Okay, I'll stray from blockbusters and certain popular cult films, then. (I'll also attach my review, if I've posted it, if you want to read my full opinion on the film, or just want to hear more about it.) In my opinion, here are some more obscure films that are worth your time.

Paprika, it's an anime film by Satoshi Kon about dreams and stuff. It's really good. Yeah, I should have come up with a real description, but I wouldn't be able to do the film justice...

Delhi Belly - http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1934231/

It's an Indian movie, but don't let that turn you off of it. It's a crime comedy, very well written and utterly hilarious. The premise isn't really anything original, kind of a "3 slackers/screw ups have to save the day" type thing, but it's extremely well executed, and I have to say I haven't laughed this much at any new comedy movie in a LONG while.

It's available on Netflix instant streaming.

The Fall.

Its about an injured stuntman in the 1920s telling a fantastic story to a little girl. It sounds pleasant, but it has a darker plot than you would think. Overall, its one hell of a film that left me very happy.

Plus, it has some of the best cinematography I've ever witnessed. Unfortunately, the trailer reveals a little more than I'd like, but most people don't like jumping into movies blindly, so view at your own discretion.

The scene transition at :50, when seen in the actual film, is breathtaking. Do yourself a favor and watch this movie.

E.g. Pan's Labyrinth is NOT obscure, but lots of people that don't actually watch movies but just go and see blockbusters wouldn't ahve seen it. Yet it has probably been watched by 50% of the subsequent posters who will go on and on about how it's not obscure even though I already said that. Yet you might not have seen it?
Or do this if you haven't. Pan's Labyrinth is my favorite film ever.

Hmm... I will just through random crap that I think might be obscure (because I really don't have a very good idea of what is obscure or not) out there, mmmkay? Perfect Blue, Videodrome, Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas, Phantasm, Memento, Big Trouble in Little China, Death Becomes Her, Attack of the Killer Tomatoes, Eraserhead, The Naked Lunch, The Machinimst, Little Shop of Horrors (1986), Time Bandits, City of Lost Children, The Crow, Dark City, Demolition Man, From Dusk Til' Dawn, The Lost boys, Marathon Man, Session 9, The Call of Cthulhu, Assault on Precinct 13, Brazil, Rollerball, *pant, pant* Starship Troopers, and Total Recall. Yes, I watch a lot of movies...

I'll recommend Come and See, as I always do. It's a Russian film about WWII. I can't praise it enough, and I've done so here many times, but if you watch it for the first time and don't feel completely hollow and dead inside then something is wrong with you. The greatest compliment I can give it is a quote from a friend after watching it for the first time "That was the best movie I've ever seen, and I never want to watch it again".

"Arashi no yoru ni" or as it is called in English "Stormy Night". It's a Japanese animated movie about a sheep and a wolf that meets in an abandoned shed one stormy night and become friends.

It's really beautiful and cute and sad.

Flame and Citron. Danish film, really good. About the Nazi occupation of Denmark and the two titular resistance fighters.
