I'm feeling lazy, so I'm just going to list a few titles, look 'em up and see if the synopsis intrigues you:

'We Need to Talk About Kevin' [http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/We_Need_to_Talk_About_Kevin_%28film%29], 'Festen' [http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Festen], 'Cinema Paradiso' [http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cinema_Paradiso], 'Hunger' [http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hunger_%282008_film%29], 'I've Loved You So Long' [http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/I%27ve_Loved_You_So_Long], 'Fish Tank' [http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fish_Tank_%28film%29], 'Nil by Mouth' [http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nil_by_Mouth_%28film%29], 'Shallow Grave' [http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Shallow_Grave], 'Mephisto' [http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mephisto_%281981_film%29] and on the off chance you want to know about the origins of the Norwegian Black Metal scene, there's this:

Threads like this always seem to be a mixed bag as half the items posted have marketing budgets bigger than most films so to have not heard of them is difficult - not watched them, then yes, quite likely but chances are you didn't because the advertising didn't engage you - would the movie then be really your thing?

So a thank you to the other half of the thread for some really good recommendations and I'll like to add my own below in a sort of grouping - to follow my own lead I'd never seen a single trailer for any of these films on another video nevermind any kind of mass marketing, they've all come from recommendations or the boredom that came from working in a video rental store for two years.

You didn't give a preference on genre so here's a mixed bag, mostly tending towards intelligent action orientated films as that's my bag:

District 13 has some awesome pakour action sequences along with Luc Bessons great sense of humour, Dobermann is awesomme if a bit violent and Killing Zoe rounds of my French trio (albeit technically an American film - also Cameo's Ron Jeremy for all of twenty seconds).

(honourable mention to the original Taxi - not the Queen Lateefah remake (I haven't seen that one)).

Lola Rennt, Anatomie and Das Experiment are some top German flicks - two of which star one of my favourite actresses in the lead so I may be a little biased but I'd dare anyone to watch the two and not like her.

Nightwatch (this one: http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0119791/ not the Russian one - also good) and Liar are both American films with strong British leads (and therefore not watched by anyone on either side of the pond) and to round off good British acting is Face - proving that Brits can make good gangster films before Guy Ritchie came along and screwed up the British movie industry. (also features Blur/Gorillaz musician Damon Albarn in a nice little character).

How about films like Moon, Cinema Paradisco (an Italian film), City of God, Blackhawk Down or K Pax?

Equilibrium (2002) It didnt get much publicity due to having a similar appearance in costume choice as the Matrix. But a very different and incredible movie to watch.

Hairspray

Oh yeah, I just went there.

Fun visuals; catchy, energetic songs; big name actors and a serious message.

Ring of Steel. It is an obviously 80's movie about a fencing guy who accidentally kills his opponent. He gets thrown out and joins an underground sword fighting league. There are quite a lot of cliches you can pick out, and the cheesiness factor is just right. The fights are quite good, especially the one between the hero and the best friend character.

The full thing is on youtube.

I haven't seen it, but I saw a trailer for a movie called Rubber. A slasher film about a tire that comes to life and starts killing people via making their heads go boom.

A Dog's Breakfast is a very weird film about a nutter trying to knock off his sister's new boyfriend. Very funny, very weird.

Extra bonus if you ever liked Stargate Atlantis because a you'll recognise most of the characters and a handful of sets.

I'm not looking for big hollywood blockbusters or famous cult classics like Evil Dead. I'm talking about movies that flew completely under my radar. Whether it was because they were before my time, or because it had a lower budget or whatever else.

I am looking for some obscure, but good movies.

I guess I'll start with Turkey Shoot. It is by no stretch of the imagination a good film, but it's one of those movies that is so bad and corny it ends up being enjoyable. A good movie to watch with some friends and some beer.
Jeromre Bixby's The Man From Earth. The only movie that had no plot whatsoever and had me captivated the whole way through.

EDIT: Also, come on people, it's clear most of you have no idea what the definition of obscure is. Don't post on threads you have absolutely no knowledge about. Titan AE? Black Hawk Down? I'm not saying they are bad movies but please....

The Secrets of My Success
It's an 80s Michael J Fox comedy. And damn it, that's why it's good.
Gran Torino
Any Mel Brooks film (History of the World Part 1, Producers, Young Frankenstein)
Airplane
Robocop
Blues Brothers (The original)

Out of curiosity, has anyone seen the Ubisoft made Assassin's Creed movie (Ascendence?). Want to know if it's just a rental or if they deserve some money for the effort.

I'll assume you haven't seen Exit Through The Gift Shop and recommend that. Cool documentary sort of about street art and the artist Banksy but with a cool twist.

I forgot about that, it was a surprisingly good musical.
Read: A musical was surprisingly good.
On that subject of musicals, I also recommend Burlesque. It had a great jazz/blues style soundtrack, the acting was decent, and the overall movie just felt right for the setting. One particular song is shot weird, but the rest of the time the shots are well done. Yes, it's a movie about a strip club. However, it never feels excessively seedy or preserve, it's just a fun movie.

I'll recommend Come and See, as I always do. It's a Russian film about WWII. I can't praise it enough, and I've done so here many times, but if you watch it for the first time and don't feel completely hollow and dead inside then something is wrong with you. The greatest compliment I can give it is a quote from a friend after watching it for the first time "That was the best movie I've ever seen, and I never want to watch it again".
This. So much.

Still chilled me to think about it months afterwards. The way everything comes together...

Paprika, it's an anime film by Satoshi Kon about dreams and stuff. It's really good. Yeah, I should have come up with a real description, but I wouldn't be able to do the film justice...

American History X
Romper Stomper
Schindler's List
Full Metal Jacket
Saving Private Ryan
Pulp Fiction
The Grifter (for all your creepy pasta needs)
