I've been waiting to scratch this itch for a while, and I can't wait for Star Citizen's FPS module to release. Any good suggestions?

For the record, by FPS I mean FPS, not third person. Already played the bajeezus out of Mass Effect.

Competitive I imagine?
Well you got Planetside 2, Blacklight Retribution, Loadout, Tribes Ascend, Hawken, Mechwarrior Online all for free, there are probably more but I can't think of any at the moment.

TF2 also has a robot mode if that is close enough.

Not necessarily competitive. Was actually hoping for a solid story mode. But thanks for your input. I play PS2 occasionally, and I used to be an avid Tribes player before the community essentially died.

Guys, he's asking for one with a good single player. Something you hardly see these days. Case in point, the first reply immediately assumed competitive, and the second could only suggest a competitive one.

I would personally also like to find out about a fairly recent sci-fi shooter with a good single player. And I too can't wait for star citizen. I don't say a specific mode because I'm waiting for the full game.

you can get system shock 2 on steam for 99 cents right now, I've heard it is good.

I'd check out Chaser, it isn't the best thing ever, but it isn't that bad. I find the plot terrible but it may be right up your alley. And be careful with the Steam reviews, if it mentions IG, Inside Gaming, or JoWood, just ignore it.

Most non-military shooters tend to be sci-fi themed, but I'll give you a couple of suggestions where the sci-fi part is particularly prominent.

The Jedi Knight series. Not quite "sci-fi" but space fantasy, but they've got spaceships and lasers and robots in them so I suppose that counts. If you like the Star Wars universe and first-person shooters you pretty much have to check out these games.

Aaaaaaaaand Bulletstorm - need I say more?

(my personal favourite sci-fi shooters are Doom and System Shock 2 but everyone's aware of Doom and SS2 was suggested earlier in the thread)

Deus Ex, Deus Ex Invisible War, for classic sci-fi rpg. The two Alien Vs Predator games (first two) for a proper story compared to the crap films. If you want to go proper classic how about the Blake Stone games? gog is doing a fps icon bundle sale right now which would be worth checking out. In my opinion I much prefer gog over Steam.

Hard Reset is a lot of fun, it's pretty much in the vein of the old Serious Sam games. Lots of running and jumping and explosions.

I'll throw Star Wars: Republic Commando into the list. Brilliant, and challenging, sci-fi squad-based FPS. It gives a soldier's view of the Star Wars universe, and despite being a rather short game I have played it for almost 90 hours. In fact, the two major complaints I have about it is how short it is, and that there is no sequel. Still, ordering around your squad mates is fun, and there is an element of strategy involved. Those squad mates have their own personalties, too, leading to some funny banter as you blow up battle droids.

Sanctum is also a sci-fi game, but it is something of a genre mix. It is an FPS TD, best played in co-op. Good fun, but perhaps not what you're after.

I'll also echo the recommendation of PS2, Tribes: Ascend and obviously the Half Life series.

Recently I've gotten back into playing Star Wars Battlefront II (PC version) and it's still fun for me and two friends to this day, having LAN battles and completing the campaign missions, I'd also suggest like Kirke has done for Republic commando, DR:HR comes to mind along with Planetside 2 for more competitive style of play, maybe even Aliens Vs Predator (2010) is more your game?, I still find that game to play and look a lot better than the emss that was Colonial Marines.

I enjoyed singularity, was pretty overlooked on its release iirc.
This works.

Also while not much of a sci-fi game, FEAR is literally one of the best first-person shooters that you can play on a computer. Plus Half-Life.

Yes! I know just the exact thing you need . Star wars : Republic Commando [PC Version]

This game was highly underrated as you cannot play as a jedi but nonetheless this is a Damn Gooooood game.

One of the best action packed Fps I have played . Challenging , Fast paced , Decent graphics and extremely well made . Its also a squad based shooter with tactical elements .

Just get it . You will love it and dont worry , you can thank me later :)

Also Star wars : Battlefront 2 is also an excellent third person shooter game , just as good as republic commando , though a bit light on the adrenaline rush but heavy on scale .

Thought I'd add Hard Reset into the mix. Single player, cyberpunk fps. Varied enemies, weapons and bosses, cool gfx and an interesting graphic-novel style story.
