Recommend me a vampire novel!

The Hellsing Manga is pretty cool. It isn't technically a novel since they come in different volumes but if you want something new to read about vampires than I would have to recommend it. The OVA series is pretty good as well.

I suppose I should come right out and suggest 'I Am Legend' as a worthy candidate.
Granted it is quite a short book but excellent when it comes to making a science behind the Vampire myth.

Sir, you are incorrect. The best comic book series ever is Hellblazer. Preacher is number two, with third place being taken up by The Invisibles, in all it's insane, hard to understand glory.

Depends on which Hellblazer writer you mean. I loved Garth Ennis' run on it, especially the wonderful, wonderful Dangerous Habits. Of course, Warren Ellis was really good too.

I've read the entire manga and watched the first anime series. Really liked the manga, anime was pretty good. Haven't watched the OAV.

Try the Hellsing manga. There's an assload of Vampire mangas, but Stoker-vampire fans tend to swear by the series. That & Vampire Hunter D.

Bram Stoker's Dracula ain't that bad. It has techno-wizardry, a realist touch and lots of sex, if you know how to read it.

Salem's Lot is quite good.

25 posts and not one mention of Anne Rice? I weep. Interview with the Vampire is an excellent stand alone story. The characters are resurrected for additional serialized novels later that are ok, but Interview was just great.

Interview With the Vampire is to vampire novels as Lord of the Rings is to fantasy novels.

Anne Rice anyway. The Vampire Lestat is one of the best vampire novels I've ever read.

D'uh. But other than that, any vampire novel I have come across has been ludicrously cack or aimed at children or hormonal teens who'll obviously read anything. Including Darren bloody Shan. In my opinion, of course. Meanwhile, Anne Rice isn't that bad in comparison.

I suggest Hellsing. It's actually a manga (with two anime series to boot), but it's, in my opinion, the best bit of modern day vampire fiction around. It sort of expands on the existing canon of Dracula (now known as Alucard), Orlok (now called Incognito), Van Helsing, and other existing characters, while still being completely original. Not sure if reading books right-to-left is your thing, but if that's the case you can watch the anime instead. Give it a try.

Ennis was pretty good, I'm re-reading Bloodlines at the moment. I'm really not a fan of the art, unfortunately.

My favourite would have to be Mike Carey, I loved the whole storyline with Nergal, Rosacarnis and Constantine's children. All His Engines was a good one too, which is a bastard because some bugger has nicked my copy...

I've already read bram Stoker's Dracula, Salem's lot, I tried Dead until Dark, and I skimmed Twilight. What I want is a modern-day vampire story (not a romance), where the vampire is either the protagonist or at least a frequently recurring character (like Bill or Edward). I'm not into Anne Rice, so don't bother mentioning her.

Edit: I didn't actually like Twilight. Really shoulda mentioned that.

GREATLY recommend Christopher Pike's 'The Last Vampire' with is the first in a series of 6 short novels.

it is pulpy, violent and visceral but oozes menace and cool. It does have a romance sub-plot but it is VERY SUB, it only serves to progress the action and the books are very action packed, exciting and did I mention violent?

I vividly remember the story describing the vampire protagonist caving a mercenary's head into a concrete wall. Sita, the protagonist is a bit of a psychopath, a really interesting anti-hero that makes James Bond seem like a boy scout.

She goes on lots of insane adventures, recounts her conflicts of the past, and there is no moping around pontificating and bitching about this and that. If she gets backed into a corner she fights her way out and s always supremely confident.

Vampirates is alright i guess, pirates and vampires combined cant go wrong. MY favourate series was Darren Shan, it gripped me and bits i did actually cry, anyone who read it probably knows the parts where the book jumps out at them.

Hmm you should read City of Bones (and City of Ashes/City of Glass both in the trilogy) however it is a romance and though none of the main characters are vampires it is that sort of modern supernatural genre that I think you are hinting towards. I don't know if you would like it but I would really recomend taking a look at it

That was my recommendation. Vampires do play a part in it, but it does tend to focus generally on the supernatural (Warlocks, demons, werewolves). I really enjoyed it and I'm not a big romance fan
