There's one main thing to notice when it comes to whisky.

There's Single Malt [http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Single_malt]. They are generally of high quality, and come with a big price tag. About 50 euros for a quarter litre bottle in Finland. Our alcohol tax is ridiculous.

My favorite single malts:
Laphroaig
Caol Ila
Bowmore
Bruichladdich

Then there's blended [http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Blended_whiskey], which are a lot cheaper, but usually don't taste as rich. 20 euros would be a normal price tag in Finland. Our alcohol tax is still ridiculous.

Favorite Blended ones:
Vat69
Rob Roy
Ballantine's.

Whatever you do, for god's sake don't buy Jim Beam or Jack Daniel's. The other tastes like gasoline, and the other tastes like gasoline with a peanut in it. Both of them are also likely to cost a lot more than a blended whisky, which actually tastes good. I used to think Jim Beam or Jack Daniel's was good stuff, then I had a glass of Bruichladdich, and realized how wrong I had been.

edit: Don't order three glasses of 30-year-old at a bar for you and your mates, like in Inglourious Basterds. You'll be in debt for the rest of your life.

No, Scotch is Whisky.

Whiskey is that shite they make in Ireland and America ;)
Irish whiskey is the best kind in my opinion, though I'll agree that American whiskey is shite (with the exeption of southern comfort, which is acceptable but has nothing on proper whiskey)
My favourites are Bushmills and Jameson for Irish, and Johnnie Walker Black Label for Scotch.

The fact that you nominate a blend as your favourite Scotch is highly indicative of your taste, or lack thereof.

Don't get me wrong, there are a number of perfectly respectable blends, but they'll never have the character of a single malt.

I currently have bottles of Caol Ila, Talisker and Bunnahabhain on the go, all rather tasty ones.

As for a favourite, no idea. Havent tried all of the singles to form such an opinion yet (I do enjoy the Islay malts especially, though).

Also, Whisky > Whiskey, AMIRITE?

I'm fond of Oban and Macallan. I had a blend once that I quite enjoyed called Jon, Mark and Robbo, but haven't been able to find it since.

Dear me, dear me. America has bad whiskey, bad beer, what do those guys drink?^^

OT: Jack Daniels for me (no I don't mind American). Or a decent Famous Grouse: maybe not the best, but never disappoints.

Chivas 12 Year Old - mah favorite.
I don't often say this because it disgusts me but... Win *shudder*

Anyway, yeah, Chivas Regal is topnotch, Glenmorangie single malt, Bells - Cheap and cheerful but is surprisingly nice when drank straight and especially so with ice and soda water; very refreshing (in a short glass though). I must also recommend Grants (cool triangular bottle), about £13 for 75cl so it's quite cheap still.

If you like your whiskey straight or just with ice, stay away from Kentucky i.e. Jack Daniels. Also, bourbons such as Jim Beam and let's face it... Pretty much all American Whiskey. If you like it with coke, i.e. you don't actually like whiskey, then the American ones are perfect due to their sweetness.

EDIT: Basically, if it is Scottish, you probably won't go wrong.

Glenfiddich or Cragganmore. If you drink then don't go for the cheap ones, take at least a single malt.

That's the ticket.

Also - I'm surprised at the amount of people recommending Ballentines. I always thought that stuff was the bottom of the barrel, drink-it-to-get-really-really-really-drunk.

Yep, underage and already experts in whiskey, these folks.

Anyway, Wild Turkey is my poison.
Underage, eh? By America's law maybe, but have you two smart-asses checked their respective countries' legal drinking age? Hint: it's not 21.

Middleton Irish Whiskey is head and sholders above the rest, IMO.

Get the cash out though; a 750ml bottle will set you back c.150 Euro.

Yeah, yeah, from time to time my spelling sucks. You're damn right though. American whiskey is shite. Irish ain't bad, if you're already drunk.

Southern Comfort is a berry liqueur, not a whisky. Just FYI, heh. :D

Scotch is whiskey. Bourbon, Rye, Miked, Irish, Canadian... etc. These are all whiskeys. As for recommendations, that completely depends on your price range. If you have minimal cash then Ancient Age bourbon or Cutty Shark scotch are good choices. If you have alot of cash Johnnie Walker Red or Black Label scotch, or Maker's Mark bourbon are excellent choices. When looking for whiskeys I use two rules; If it costs more then your normal budget should allow, drink it straight; no ice, water, or any sort of mix. Rule two, don't buy American unless that's the only product within your budget. Most American and some Canadian whiskeys are made the same way that American Vodkas and Rums are, with corn or high fructose corn syrup. If you've had the chance to sample an imported vodka, rum or whiskey next to an American equivalent the difference in taste and effect is very obvious. Most American liquors are essentially made the same way that "big Macs" burgers are...

Thank fuck someone got to that before I did, I was about to lose it.

OP: Depending on your palate, good smokey whiskies are Laphroaig and Ardbeg though take care as the latter is an aquired taste, however it's unlike any other whisky you'll ever try.

Sweeter ones include the likes of Glenmorangie and the benchmark that is Macallan.

Highland Park is the best all-rounder and my sommelier friend recommends Cragganmore to everyone (though I have never tried it myself, this guy seriously knows what he's talking about).

Islay single malt, if you like that earthen, tastes like the barrel kinda whiskey.
