Angel Beats! is a great short anime that will make you cry like a baby. Amazing characters and just enough action. Re-watching it now with a couple friends.

Code Geass is one of the best anime shows I have ever seen. It's that rare mix of mind and action that gets it just right. The premise is Brittania has taken over the world and made Japan its "bi***" and a school kid gets the power to try to fix it. It's also one of the few that has robots that I thoroughly enjoy.

If you are looking for something longer One Piece is one of the best animes when it comes to character development. It's also very action packed and fun (just make sure you watch it in Japanese as the English 4kids dub killed the material).

If you're looking for something that will mess your head up and is a bit more gore filled- Higurashi no naku koro ni. It's a surreal experience in a town where everyone is totally crazy.

All above vary in the action, Higurashi probably being the least action-ey but it has it's moments. All are great in character development too, though Higurashi will have your brain full of f***.

Also I'd highly recommend Panty and Stocking with Garterbelt, but I'm not sure at all how to market it.
Apart from it being awesome.

I second both.

It's good, focuses heavily on character development, mostly in the form of banter. The action sequences are a bit few and far between.

MC's name is Horo.

It's one of the Gainaxiest Gainax productions ever made. I consider that a good thing, but it's not going to be everyone's cup of tea.

If you're trying to get into anime avoid stuff like Lucky star as some the references are quite hard to get unless you're an avid anime fan. as for my suggestion... I'm going to say Cromartie High school, its short, its humour is good and often takes the p*ss out of itself
and they have a small section on internet trolling :3

Well, for action and character and relationship development, I suppose Baccano! [http://www.escapistmagazine.com/articles/view/editorials/reviews/anime/6404-Anime-Review-Baccano], Kara no Kyoukai - The Garden of Sinners [http://www.animenewsnetwork.com/review/kara-no-kyoukai-the-garden-of-sinners], Puella Magi Madoka★Magica [http://www.escapistmagazine.com/forums/read/326.275533-Puella-Magi-Madoka-Magica-Review], and maybe Monster [http://www.themanime.org/viewreview.php?id=969] would be more than serviceable.

While not featuring much in the way of action, Spice & Wolf [http://www.themanime.org/viewreview.php?id=1055] and the on-going Steins;Gate [http://littleredreviewer.wordpress.com/2011/06/17/anime-review-steinsgate/] could also be worth a look.

I reccomend Soul Eater. (both the anime and the manga =) Because I'm indy. :p
Seriously though it's great fun. Lots of action, humor and story. And it's very consistent on all three counts. There are only like 3 filler episodes in a series that's 51 episodes long.

Other than that people have already reccomended most of the anime's I've seen or is going to see. Like BeBop, Clannad, Darker than black, and so on.

If you like silly humor and heartwarming fuzzyness without any bad stuff happening, I reccomend Azumanga Daioh. It's seriously that awesome.

Before you all rant at me, yes I know this thread is done to death, the reason I'm making one is I want some sugestions that are specific to the kind of shows I like.

Right so I want to get into anime but I've tried all the obvious shows (naruto, Dragon ball, etc) so I tought I would ask the anime fans we have around the site. What I want is a mix of action and character and relationship development. Sex is fine but obvious not to hentai levels. If it helps the only anime I've watched all the way though has been The last airbender (I know its not Japanese but it was awesome so shh)any help would be good really.
OK one of the best anime/manga's out there little obscure, not to much that its not easy to find. It's better as a manga since the art is mind bogglingly detailed and the anime stops about halfway since it was a short project. But warning not for the light of heart extreamly gory and doesnt hold back at all. Amazing plot huge character development with really well fleshout characters its called Berserk easily one of the best things I have ever read anybody I know who has read it agrees with me don't miss out its insanly good esspecially once you get into it.

READ IT BERSERK TRUST ME YOU WON'T REGRET IT

Broken Blade: Interesting twist on the mecha genre, in that the environment is desert punk-ish and the tech is magic fantasy. Combat is great, and character development is strong. 6 episodes, each is 45 minutes.

Seirei no Moribito: Guardian of the Spirit: Japanese high fantasy setting in which a mercenary has committed her life to saving the lives of 7 worthy individuals in penitence to the 7 friends who died because of her. She has already saved the lives of 6, and has taken the task of protecting a prince who's body is host to the egg of a water spirit that is prophesied to bring calamity to the world, from his father. Combat is animated in a strikingly realistic and plausible way (for anime). Character development is pretty much the point.

Listen to this man, for the truth falls from his mouth.

By far the best anime I've seen.

Well Sekirei has comedy and action, so you can try that

and witchblade is also good

both series do a good job in not letting the fanservice get in the way of the story.

I almost freaked when Soul Eater wasn't recommended but one of the last few people finally mentioned it.

Soul Eater, Soul Eater, Soul Eater! It has action, comedy, character relationships and development, story, everything. The anime stops following the manga after about 2/3 of the way through, and it isn't very good past that, but the manga (should you choose to continue is amazing).

I also reinforce the recommendations for Code Geass, Death Note, The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya (including the movie), and Full Metal Alchemist Brotherhood (quite possible the greatest anime ever). Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann is always entertaining as hell and someone mentioned Azumanga Daioh already (it's a mind-numbingly stupid comedy, but if that's what you want, go with it).
