So. Im a Scandinavian guy, who has never really like japanese animation. Therefore, I do not think i have watched any serious Anime-films in my entire life. But being a huge film-nerd, I cannot accept a fact that there could be a genre that doesn't include any movies I like. So I turn to you dear escapist.

I would Like to see a film that could change the whole way I look at japanese animated movies. So... What do you think is the movie that defines anime-movies? What is the anime equivelant of Clockwork Orange, Reservoir Dogs, Nosferatu or Vertigo? I would really like to see a meaningful and deep anime-movie.

If you like fantasy or a film that makes you think, try Princess Mononoke, something just plain weird or whimsical, go with Howl's Moving Castle, another film to try is Spirited Away. They're all Japanese animation, good movies to sit down and watch every once in awhile, also try some of the other movies by Studio Ghibli. They're a good place to start at.

EDIT: Darn, ninja'd!

Another good one that so far has not been mentioned is The Girl Who Leapt Through Time.
And if you like giant robot action, the Evangelion Rebuild films. The first one, 1.11, You Are (Not) Alone is out with an English dub. I don't believe the second is yet, at least not here >.>

While it's not a movie, you should watch Trigun.
It's got cowboys, and it's post-apocalyptic, and the main character, while he is a gunman, refuses to seriously harm another human being.

Did I mention it's really funny?
It's really funny.

Watch Cencoroll! It was animated, written, and designed all by one guy. It rocks, I've watched it twice in the same weekend and I plan to watch it again this weekend! It's a short film though, about half an hour. I still highly recommend it, one of my favorites for suuuuuuuure!!

Try "Ghost in The Shell",
Really cool and stylish science fiction, plus one of the first anime films to do well in a more mainstream (and western) audience. Plus it has some really interesting philosophical things going on too.

Let me know what you thought!

Oh, and please watch it in original VO the dub is...well...less successful.

Yeah, I have heard about that one. Actually, remember playing the game for PS1 WAAAAYYYY back... I will probably try that one, since I like sci-fi, and I have memories of Giant-robot beetles from the game? Robot insects should kick ass.

Watch some of Satoshi Kon's work; Perfect Blue, Millennium Actress, Tokyo Godfathers, and Paprika are all great.

Apparently the Studio Ghibli films are pretty good, though I've personally not watched any of their stuff to date. As for stuff I am interested in myself, I'd recommend the Melancholy Of Haruhi Suzumiya, that is to say, the animated film that takes place after the anime ends (though it's better to watch the whole anime first, then the film...). Can't remember the full title of the film, but a quick Google search should give the answer.

Also, for more Western-friendly anime films, I'd also recommend Final Fantasy VII: Advent Children, Final Fantasy: The Spirits Within, and Resident Evil: Degeneration. All good anime/CGI films, and linked to good games, and very Western-friendly... :)

Oh, and finally, as a good gateway from Western films to anime films, as a sort of 'entry-level' anime, I'd recommend the Animatrix, if you liked the main Matrix series. It expands on The Matrix really well, while also giving you a set of bitesize anime chunks that will definitely help ease you into liking anime in general... :D

Also, see if you can find the updated version too. They re-did some of the scenes in CGI, which gives the film a cool transition between CGI and regular animation. It did recieve a lot of flak from fans, but personally I like it. You can compare em' and come to your own conclusion.

Cheers!

Princess Robot Bubblegum: A classic amalgamation of every anime ever made. Ever.

It's only ten minutes long, but has components of every anime ever.

oh yeah, there's also Clannad, but I would suggest watching the series as opposed to the movie, but the series is 48 episodes so...
