We're talking anime films, not the sad, sad state of modern TV anime. Don't worry, though. With the state of several modern (read; moeblob) anime being turned into anime films, this will be somewehat accurate soon enough.Krythe said:Princess Robot Bubblegum: A classic amalgamation of every anime ever made. It's only ten minutes long, but has components of every anime ever.
I shall definitelly try this, and since you ask, update later this week, about my feelings on this.AngryLawnNinja said:Vkmies said:Yeah, I have heard about that one. Actually, remember playing the game for PS1 WAAAAYYYY back... I will probably try that one, since I like sci-fi, and I have memories of Giant-robot beetles from the game? Robot insects should kick ass.AngryLawnNinja said:Vkmies said:So. Im a Scandinavian guy, who has never really like japanese animation. Therefore, I do not think i have watched any serious Anime-films in my entire life. But being a huge film-nerd, I cannot accept a fact that there could be a genre that doesn't include any movies I like. So I turn to you dear escapist.
I would Like to see a film that could change the whole way I look at japanese animated movies. So... What do you think is the movie that defines anime-movies? What is the anime equivelant of Clockwork Orange, Reservoir Dogs, Nosferatu or Vertigo? I would really like to see a meaningful and deep anime-movie.
Try "Ghost in The Shell",
Really cool and stylish science fiction, plus one of the first anime films to do well in a more mainstream (and western) audience. Plus it has some really interesting philosophical things going on too.
Let me know what you thought!
Also, see if you can find the updated version too. They re-did some of the scenes in CGI, which gives the film a cool transition between CGI and regular animation. It did recieve a lot of flak from fans, but personally I like it. You can compare em' and come to your own conclusion.
Cheers!
You sold me on that Hitchcock note. I will keep that title in mind and check it out. And if that "Spirited away" thing is your favourite movie ever, it's bound to be at least good, I guess.mireko said:Keep in mind that Anime isn't really a genre, so no specific anime can be said to "define" it beyond being animated and Japanese. That said, here are some suggestions.
Ghost in the Shell: Definitely as good as people say it is. Unlike the poster above I'd recommend you get the "unfixed" version, it looks nicer.
Perfect Blue: Not as solid as Satoshi Kon's other movies, but it's disturbing as all hell and a bit like a Hitchcock film.
5 Centimeters Per Second: A good, melancholy drama.
The Girl who Leapt through Time: A very charming movie about a girl who gains the ability to leap through time (didn't see that coming now did you?). Funny and emotionally engaging.
Studio Ghibli's movies are excellent as well. Especially Spirited Away, which happens to be my favorite movie ever. Every frame of that film is solid gold.
Hey, there's been some great anime the last couple of years. Dennou Coil, Aria, Aoi Hana, Sketchbook, Sayonara Zetsubou Sensei, Simoun to name but a few. And fuck it, I loved K-ON!, Hidamari Sketch and Marimite too. None of these have any of.. that.Mstrswrd said:We're talking anime films, not the sad, sad state of modern TV anime. Don't worry, though. lol, that's from The Ballad of Gay Tony DLC for GTA4, right? Thought i was going to wet my pants when i watched that in-game!
Anyway, everything by Miyazaki (Mononoke Hime, etc), as well as Akira (hell yeah), and Paprika, which is about Psychology and Dreams. No, it's not a rip of Inception. It came out years ago.
I just finished watching the first movie. But I must tell you that I was forced to watch the english dub, which indeed, was pretty silly in some parts, alltough the puppet master sounded pretty cool. And I didn't really mind Kusanagi's voice. They are supposed to be Cyborgs, right? Also, I had to watch it from a small computer scene, so I guess I didn't really experienced EVERYTHING the movie had to offer.AngryLawnNinja said:Let me know what you thought!

But with that said, I really, actually enjoyed it. Kinda reminded me of Blade Runner for some reason. I liked that they really didn't give away too much in terms of the universe and how all worked. The absence of music in most parts was also very enjoyable and overall it worked. Planning to watch the second part as well, some day soon.
THanks for shouting this thing out for me. It seems pretty darn interesting.
