I have a round trip commute of 2.5 hours a day so I listen to audible books. I've listened to Game of Thrones and Saga of the Seven Suns.

I get 1 credit a month to buy ANYTHING so I look for excellent but long books. Series are especially appreciated.

So, I'm on to my next book. I love horror, fantasy, sci-fi, drama, true crime, almost anything.

What really, really long audible books do you know about and recommend?

Your advice is appreciated.

Wait for the Dungeons & Dragons novel Ice T narrated to come out. I'm sure that'll be a blast.

I would recommend the Stormlight Archives, by Brandon Sanderson. He's only got 2 books out right now, but each one is 40+ hours of audiobook goodness. And the books themselves cost like $35-$40 if you bought it directly, which means it's a pretty good deal to use your 1 credit/month on.

They are really good books, as are his Mistborn Chronicles, equally huge, but so far my favorite is the Stormlight Archives. So if you are looking for a long time investment for your commute, that should hold you for about a month I think, or pretty close.

Enjoy!

Crap. I'd like to help, but most of the books I'd pick are actually exceptionally short for audio books.

There's always the Terry Brooks Shannara series. I don't remember how good it is, but when I burned the first book for my mom it was over 24 hours long. And I remember my younger self enjoying it.

50 Shades of Grey narrated by Gilbert Gottfried. It is the /only/ (oop too used to that way from skype.) way to listen.

On that note, I hope there are a few good options tossed here so I can hunt some down!

Joe Abercrombie's First Law trilogy and subsequent stand alone sequels are fantastic audiobooks. The narrator (Steven Pacey) is top drawer, and snaps effortlessly between accents and voices, making it easy to establish who is speaking and giving the characters extra oomph. On top of that, they're just excellently entertaining books. Similar tonally to A Song of Ice and Fire (in terms of grey/grey or grey/black morality) but with a snappier pace and more liberal implementation of gallows humor. His writing improves by leaps and bounds over the course of the six books as well.

Other LONG ass audible books I've enjoyed (I, too, am an audible user, and understand why you want long books...I'm in the same boat) are...

Stephen King's The Stand and Under the Dome...both mammoth tomes
The Kingkiller Chronicles by Patrick Rothfuss
The Dresden files (short individually but there's like 700 million of them)
Harry Potter series

If you like horror...it's not a long book but I really enjoyed "14". Hard to find good horror with Lovecraftian influences.

Thanks! I will look into those. My next credit should generate shortly, though, they keep offering me a deal (3 for $40 I think?). I'll likely buy one.

Of the very few audibles I've listened to so far, "14" was one of them and I loved it! I do wish they'd really gone for broke at the end, but it was very good. That First Law Trilogy sounds great. Reviewing.

Agreed...it did end with a bit of a whimper. I just find it's near impossible to unroot tonally similar horror. For having cast such a huge shadow on the genre not very many people do "Lovecraft".

You'll *love* Abercrombie. And Pacey is second to none as a narrator.

Yo, if you have any long audiobook recommendations of your own, I'm all ears. I'm perpetually looking for new reads.

"Go The Fuck To Sleep" as narrated by Samuel L Jackson

or

"Hitchiker's Guide To The Galaxy" as narrated by Stephen Fry(if only to hear his dulcet tones <3)

Both are pretty good from what I've tried, though I've never seen Fry phone in one a performance like this ever, so idk.

I loved this, but someone tried to give it to me and it played all out of order! It is a hoot, but only 11 hours long:

In college, I loved Ursula Leguinn but listened to one of her books, and it was like listening to a hipster drone on about white walls with white mice walking down an off color egg shell carpet etc.... I'll be avoiding her works from here on out.

I agree, especially the last Potter book was awesome audible.

Ah yes, I've read Christopher Moore. Only 11 hours though! Pah!

I got my hands on Potter narrated by Stephen Fry. Is fantastic. Not sure his version is on Audible though.

The Abhorsen series by Garth Nix is narrated by Tim Curry, at least for the first three installments. Great story and great performance, it's one of my favorites :) The books in order are Sabriel, Lirael, Abhorsen, and just a month ago the latest book came out called Clariel. Clariel isn't narrated by Tim Curry, but they got another guy whose voice is about the same timbre (though his performance isn't quite so...dramatic, lol) so it isn't hard to get used to.

Also, if you haven't spent your three credits, the first book in the series is more or less standalone, the second two are all one story with a pretty intense cliffhanger at the end of the first part (I'm talking like a Catching Fire kind of cliffhanger), and the last one goes way back in time to tell a story which eventually wraps around to reconnect with the present day stories.

Thanks! Bloated Guppy suggested, among other things, something called "King Kill" I'm going to give a try. I just downloaded book 1. 2 is out there... no 3 yet!

Just about done with the 2 of 3 books out in Kingkiller, which were nothing short of spectacular!

These two Stormlight books are 45 hours! I just used 2 credits for them. Thanks for recommending. I'll be listening to them shortly.

Bossypants written and narrated by Tina Fey. It's only 5.5 hours long, but it's a great listen.

Let me know what you think. After Mistborn I'm generally of the opinion that Sanderson is a medium-talent hack, but I'm curious to know how much he's improved over the intervening decade.

The Strain Trilogy - Guillermo Del Toro, Chuck Hogan
Under the Dome - Stephen King

I'm listening to 11/22/63(stephen King) but I can't recommend it on audible the guy reading it is terrrrible.
You're the 2nd person to recommend Under the Dome. Is the TV show based upon it? If the guy is that bad... I dunno. Though, the guy that did Game of Thrones had issues but the stuff was so great it didn't matter. The narrator, when gifted, does make a huge difference though.

I did read that one, and it was terrific. Very funny. Assuming it really was Tina Fey that wrote it (and it likely was) she has can really make a terrific read. But for value, I'm looking for great, long stuff!

I'll do that. I'm really thinking of getting the others you suggested but they cost less than a credit!

ITMT, I wonder when book 3 of Kingskiller comes out. Absolutely one of the most terrific things I've ever listened to. A cross between Batman, Conan and Harry Potter. Spectacular.
