For a long time, I couldn't really find any anime that I really liked. I don't really care for the usual cliches that you see so often in them. However, I really enjoyed the first season of Death Note and just finished Code Geass which I also liked a lot.

I guess I like the whole "ambitious guy gets unique power and uses it to try and change the world" thing. I enjoyed Code Geass more than Death Note though but that was mainly because I found the cast of characters more likeable.

So, keeping this stuff in mind, are there any other anime's you think I'd like?

Also, I would much prefer it to be English dubbed. Reading everything while still looking at what's going on kind of ruins immersion for me. It's not an absolute deal breaker but definitely a preference.

Memories! So good. I found the story about the industrial war nation much more moving than almost any other anime I've seen (admittedly, outside of the Ghibli canon, not a huge amount). There's that one scene where the train doors open, revealing the workers, crammed in, all identical. It was sort of an obvious visual metaphor, and I'm not sure whether it was just the bleak, washed-out artwork, but I found it really powerful. So, OT, I'd second that recommendation. And Trigun. It's quite an obvious choice, but I love it.

If you liked the darker side of thoes anime, then I recomend Darker than Black. But only really the 1st and 3rd season. The one in the middle gets a bit wierd.

For something lighter hearted, Fairy Tail and Gintama are both very good, although Gintama isn't dubbed.

While it doesn't exactly fit the "Suddenly Powerful Individual Tries To Change The World" model, you may enjoy the premise of Eden of the East [http://www.crunchyroll.com/library/Eden_of_the_East]. Basically, the plot is that a man wakes from amnesia to find that he is stupidly rich (around eight billion yen). However, beware; Eden of the East focuses a bit too much on what it likes to refer to as "Johnies". I'll let you imagine what those are.

Since this is a video game forum, I'll recommend some video game related shows. Sword Art Online and Accel World are quite good watches.

Unfortunately, no English dubs are available for them at this point in time.

Oh yeah go for Gurren Lagann. Even if you don't like mecha stuff it's less about the mecha and more about the manly men spirit behind the mecha. (but considering you could stand them in Code Geass it should be fine) The English dub is actually good for the most part, though I still think Japanese Kamina got the Giga Drill Breaker better. You see you don't just shout the words you have to pour all of your manly spirit into it

The English dub still nails all the badass speeches and stuff so it's good

Ah do I dare recommend Higurashi? If you like mystery and can handle a bit of gore it's awesome. It's like Groundhog Day in that these people have to relive the same month forever, all of them dying one by one to mysterious circumstances then respawning once the month ends.

Basically they have to solve why they're dying and who is doing it. But that's dealt with more in the second season. The first season is more about delicious murder

Well if you like Code Geass Code Geass Akito the Exiled on dvd just came out but I'm not sure if there are any dubs for that.

Similarly also produced by Sunrise the relatively recent Gundam 00 is quite similar in tone, also with lots of mecca action and a world changing story lining. Its 50 episodes long plus a film so it'll keep you occupied for a while.

I've always loved Wolf's Rain, particularly the final 4 episodes, which when watched in a row makes for one of the most emotional 90 minutes of anything I've ever seen.

Somewhat similar - Speed Grapher - it's somewhat like Code Geass but on a grittier, lower powered note. The main character gets an unique ability and there are also others with unique abilities. But instead of the action spanning throughout the world, it's mostly in one city and him trying to protect a girl.

Never heard of the show, but here in England, 'Johnny' is a slang word for a condom.

Is that it?

Seconded!! Oh, I see someone's already done that. Well, I place my vote all the same!

Toonami on Cartoon Network just started getting Soul Eater. The first episode just played about a week ago, but if you start from the second, you probably won't miss much. Though, they'll probably play it again soon. I thought of it as something sort of like Bleach, but with a lot more creativity and a unique artistic flare. Also, there are people who turn into giant bladed weapons to be wielded by other people, and I know you'll totally wanna check that out.

Also, if the idea of a fantasy-slice-of-life series involving a human getting stuck in a high school for monsters sounds interesting, whom tries to hide his human identity and meets some other monsters who beat the crap out of a new villain every week, perhaps you'd enjoy Rosario + Vampire. Just know that it's also a harem. Add very echi.

Baccano and Durarara!! are fantastic anime, full of excitement and suspense! I recommend it.

There is also Gurren Lagann.

Although not the everyone's preference, I can recommend some Shounen, but those go on for ages (and still are ongoing) Such as One Piece and Fairy Tail.
I second One Piece, it's super <spoiler=SUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUPEEEEEEEEEEEEER>.

I'd also recommend Bobobo-bo bo-bobo primarily because it's batshit insane. Otherwise Shaman King is pretty good even if it is a bit butchered from the manga, Naruto is okay depending on your bullshit tolerance (the most powerful character in the entire series gets killed like a *****, that kind of bullshit), Dragon Ball and the follow ups though Dragon Ball itself is probably the best.

Edit: Samurai Champloo has a very high concentration of awesome. I also recall Excel Saga being great stuff.

Edit edit: Bobobo is full english dubbed and so is Shaman King and both are cent dubs.
All of Dragon Ball except a few TV specials are dubbed in English and it's a damn fine dub. The new One Piece dub is by the same people and it's very good too I recommend it though it is in progress. Naruto dub is pretty good apart from the hero can be a bit screechy and I'd recommend finding the uncut version. Dunno about the others I mentioned being dubbed though sorry.

They've already been mentioned, but im gonna recommend Gurren Lagann as the single most epic thing I have ever seen, Baccano is essentially what would happen in Quentin Tarantino made an anime Darker than Black is what Heroes was supposed to be, Puella Magi Madoka Magica may be a bit more advanced, it is really worth the watch.

I too, recommend Darker than Black. There's three seasons? Did you count the OVA as a season?

Deadman Wonderland comes to mind as well as Akira and Baccano.

Death Note and Gurren Lagann.

Death Note is a great example of how fantastic storytelling can be in anime sometimes, with a bunch of really engrossing characters and situations.

Gurren Lagann on the other hand is an incredible representation of how to do any form of visual entertainment right. It's absolutely beautiful, one of the best-drawn animes i've ever seen. It's also MANLY AS ALL SHIT.
