Right, just bought the first books from the Black company, Deathgate and Wolfblade series, which sounds like £20 well spent. Feel free to keep suggesting though, I will always need more books.

Plus I would recommend the series by Trudy Canavan for a slightly more magically focussed fantasy. Still awesome, but there is alot more emphasis on particular people, and it's less harsh. She's written The Black Magician Trilogy, The Age of The Five, another book for the Black Magician universe, and the first book in another series is coming out soon where I am :)
Sooooooooo not fair! I've been dying for her next one for ages! And another lover of Night Angel here.

I hate it when people actually take my advice, I worry that I'll have gotten it completely wrong haha. Stupid I know. Just remember, it wasn't me who suggested Wolfblade.

EDIT Sorry for double post.

George R. R. Martin - A Song of Fire and Ice Serise

R. A Salvatore - The Drizzt Do'Urden books (Icewind Dale Trilogy, The Dark Elf Trilogy, etc.)
I agree with the Legend of Drizzt books, it's one of my favorite book series of all times. If you want to be kept busy for a while, at last count I believe there are about 19 books in the series. They're awesome.

The Nightside series by Simon R. Green. I own and am re-reading 10 of the 12 books out currently.
How does that compare to the Forest Kingdom of his? I absolutely adored Blue Moon Rising and Blood and Honour when I was a teenager, but I haven't read anything else of his since. I keep meaning to though.

Also more book recs:

The Watch series by Sergey Lukyanenko (Night Watch, Day Watch and two others I haven't read yet)
Total Oblivion: More or Less by Alan DeNiro

This is shocking, never seen a Brent Weeks fan before, and we have 3 in this thread!

The first in the Traitor Spy Trilogy is out May if I remember correctly... and you can preorder it :)

Harry Potter, Skulduggery Pleasant, Artemis Fowl (Definintely the last two)

I've always been a fan of Tamora Pierce's work, but it's often a marmite situation with her.

Oh, and this guy, man he's just brilliant: http://www.fictionpress.com/u/660278/MelasZepheos

Such a witty, subtle author, a master of the fantasy genre, nay, a master of fiction in his own right. Deserves easily to be counted up there amongst Tolkein, Rowling, or maybe just Meyer.

[sub]This shameless self plug is intended as a joke, though do feel free to read my stories, and I would love it if someone would review them every once in a while.[/sub]

The Circle series, by Ted Dekker. It consists of Black, Red, White, and Green, but the universe is huge, and expands into 9 or 10 other books, so If you like interconnecting plots, then you'll like it.

I highly suggest reading Kenneth Oppel's "Airborn". It's very creative, and the imagery is spectacular. Then read the sequel "Skybreaker", but avoid the third book at all costs! I can not stress that enough!

Another book that I suggest is Nothern Lights (a.k.a. Golden Compass), the first book on it's Dark Materials trilogy. The other books aren't that good. Anyway, it isn't like the film, if you saw it, it has more depth to it, and if you haven't seen the film, good for you.
I don't know, The Subtle Knife had its moments. Pullman didn't fully lose it until The Amber Spyglass, by which point the actual story had been shoved to one-side to make room for the soapboxing against all things C.S. Lewis (and in so doing managed to duplicated everything there is to dislike about Lewis' works). Speaking of which...

Well, The Magician's Nephew is in the running for worst book in the series (it's either the worst, or second to The Last Battle) plus Lion, The Witch and the Wardrobe was written first. The Horse and His Boy is better, but it has essentially nothing to do with the rest of the series so it's not like they're going to create any continuity problems by skipping it (and they are working on a budget).

I loved the Black Magician Trilogy but had forgotten who had written it so THANK YOU! I've seen mixed reviews of The Age of The Five though. How does it compare the the Black Magician books in terms of quality and characterization? I've heard it was very cliched and that saddened me, since I really liked her first trilogy.

I think you just made my night with that news. I love you.

Was I the only one who hated Elene/Doll Girl?

OT Tanith Lee. Beautiful prose, interesting characters, amazing plots. Drinking Sapphire Wine/Don't Bite the Sun are/is my favourite. They're two books usually sold as one called by either name. Not sure if it's strictly fantasy, there's a lot of sci-fi in there too.

It isn't as good as Black Magician. In my opinion anyway. The characters are kind of dull and Auraya has none of Sonea's charm. They're still worth a read but it's like she wasn't really trying.

I've seen a few recommendations for Terry Pratchett and his "Discworld" novels, but considering the guy has dozens of these it might be tricky to know where to start. I'd suggest "Guards, Guards!" because it's centered around the most normal characters in the fantasy world: street cops, and how they have to deal with unnatural events such as a dragon attack. If you like that, follow it up with "Men at Arms" which deals with the preposterous notion of someone using a gun in a fantasy world. :p

if you want a good one, that may be a little strange, check out the REDWALL series. animals instead of people, but its still pretty tight.

It's pretty similar in style of writing - with a good depth to the world and the same switching between characters. Buuuuuuut I didn't feel the characters had as much depth to them - the narration feels a bit more withdrawn. Alot of the characters she focuses on change between books so you're forced to follow mainly Auraya, and I really didn't like her.
I didn't feel it was cliched though, in fact I thought the storyline had alot more plot twists than The Black Magician trilogy, and I didn't see them coming.

Hmmm I think I'll stop here before I get too into reviewing lol. If you liked the first trilogy, I'm pretty sure you should try The Age of The Five too, though she does seem to be aiming for an older audience, and at times it felt a bit forced, since she seemed to take that to mean that the characters had to purely flawed rather than likeable.

I think she was overshadowed by the awesomeness that was Kylar.... seriously though, I didn't hate her, she irritated me alot of the time - she seemed too judgemental and a little one-dimensional in her beliefs. And actually, yes, she was overshadowed by how much I adored most of the other characters.
