Hello fellow Escapists. I've noticed my DS/3DS library is a bit lacking. All I have is Pokemon, Animal Crossing: A New Leaf, and Paper Mario: Sticker Star. So, I was wondering if you guys could recommend me some awesome games for future purchasing!

Shin Megami Tensei: Devil Survivor: Overclocked is the best game in the DS library that I've played. The combat system is great, the story is good, and the characters are likable for the most part.
Shin Megami Tensei IV takes a very old school approach to the RPG genre, but it is really good as well.

Well, Rune Factory 4 just came out (If you're in the U.S). It's basically Harvest Moon + Skyrim. It's a barrel of fun if you don't mind dungeons and turnips.

Also, Etrian Odyssey 4 and Monster Hunter 3 Ultimate.

Seconded if you're into RPGs.

---

Aliens Infestation - The best Aliens game made in years: recruit a squad of up to 20 different Marines, explore the Sulaco, dialog and plot changes depending on who dies. Extremely inexpensive too, on amazon.

Barnyard Blast - think Ghost N' Goblins only you're a pig with a whip and, pistol. Old-school side-scrolling action game

Castlevania: Dawn of Sorrow - Very similar to Symphony of the Night. You play as a non-Belmont who can collect various weapons, level up and, use the touch screen to draw symbols (thus casting spells)

Chrono Trigger DS - Port of the SNES classic JRPG

Contra 4 - It's Contra 4!

Final Fantasy IV - remake of the classic SNES game Final Fantasy II.

JUMP! Ultimate Stars - Smash Bros only with anime characters. Import only. Super Stars came before Ultimate Stars.

Legendary Starfy - It's a mostly water based platformer with a cute character. A fun game and 5th of a series that mostly stayed in Japan

Metal Slug 7 - IT'S METAL SLUG!!

Point Blank DS - Point Blank is a great light-gun game. The DS version doesn't require a light gun but is still great fun

Wario: Master of Disguise - A Wario game on the DS. Disguises that give powers, treasure hunting and, ass kicking.

Fire Emblem Awakening - Really fun if you're into strategy RPGs. If you're not into SRPGs, it's a great entry to the genre.

Kingdom Hearts 3Ds - If you're into the Kingdom Hearts series you're probably already looking for this. If not, it's a JRPG with engaging combat but a really convoluted plot.

Mario Kart 7 - It's Mario Kart. Fun game that doesn't require a big commitment to master.

Resident Evil: Revelations - While it's structured like RE4, it plays a lot more like earlier entries in the series while really emphasizing horror.

Shin Megami Tenshi IV - A really satisfying JRPG even though starting out is a little slow.

Theatrhythm: Final Fantasy - A rhythm game based on the Final Fantasy soundtracks, from the original up to Somnus from XV (then VsXIII). Easy to pick up and easy to get lost in.

I really thought I would have had more 3DS games...then again my last few weeks have been spent in Animal Crossing...I didn't mention Mario 3D Land or, New Super Mario Bros 2 because they're good but you already know if you want them or not (though I would recommend 3D Land over NSMB2).

Ghost Trick is a great game, excellent animation and a pretty good gameplay hook. You are a ghost who can possess different objects in a scene and interact with them to change events happening in the real world. Its kind of hard to say too much without giving away spoilers, but trust me its worth playing.

Hotel Dusk is another good game, it has quite a good mystery story to it and a kinda unique line drawing art style that I really enjoyed:

999, Hotel Dusk and Ghost Trick already recommended? My goodness - be still my heart.

Seriously though, I'll second all of those.

If you have any affinity for classic adventure games, Hotel Dusk will scratch that itch nicely, and has a very unique style to it as well. The story's a really interesting mystery to chew on and then resolve.

999 is at times more of a visual novel interspersed with occasional math puzzles, but the story it tells is great and the characters you meet are wonderfully written, and it has a few plot twists that will pretty much creep up on you and punch your teeth out in the best of ways.

Ghost Trick is an all-out fabulous game and, honestly, if you're faced with a choice between the above three, go for Ghost Trick. Whatever praise I could give it here wouldn't be the half of it. Unique gameplay, unique visual style, great story, fantastic soundtrack, absolutely worth playing.

I'd recommend Rhythm Thief as well. I'm a novice to the rhythm game genre, but I found it a nice blend of challenging and easy enough to grasp with rather nice music. If you like electroswing, or blends of big band with modern electronica, you'll probably find the music addictive.

Since you like Pokemon, go find a nice used copy of Pokemon Mystery Dungeon: Explorers of Sky. Nice RPG style gameplay and honestly a storyline that really impressed me. One normally doesn't expect that from Pokemon, but even compared to recent complexity of storyline in B/W one and two, it's about as jarring as leaning down to coo at a little fluffy kitten and then having said kitten drop-kick you three miles into the far distance. Except, you know, pleasant, so maybe more like getting up to hear the doorbell ring, expecting mormons there to preach at you, and instead finding your best friend has ordered you an extra large of your favourite pizza with cheesy breadsticks and your favourite soft drink, all delivered by the most comely deliveryperson the pizza place has to offer. Or maybe I am overrating it slightly because it reduced my usually stony-faced self to gross bawling tears with a plot twist, but I did have a family member dying at the time, so, you may want to take my reaction with a grain of salt given how easy to come by tears were at that point.

PMD is worth looking for, basically. You can probably find a copy for 12 bucks or so if you don't mind used. It's good. It's really good. You'll like it. (Explorers of Time and Explorers of Darkness are basically the same game, but Explorers of Sky has much more "bonus content" and a few other tweaks. Think of it like the difference between Fallout 3 and Fallout 3 GOTY Edition.)

Also worth keeping an eye out for is Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney. If you're new to the series, you'll want to start with the first game, but they all pop up used fairly often. If you can't find it for your DS but still want immediate satisfaction of playing it, the first game's been ported to a few other systems, most notably iOS.

Speaking of iOS - I believe you can try out the first chapters of Ghost Trick for free and the first case of Phoenix Wright for free by downloading said apps from Apple's store onto your iPod or iPhone, and there are sales every so often so you won't spend more than 15 on the entire game in any case. They port pretty smoothly over and it's actually how I own them. Something to keep in mind if you want something of a demo before buying for either your iPhone or your DS.

Yep. Also if you get the Ace Wright series on iOS its had a HD facelife and you get all 3 games for one price. That is a serious lot of game for the money.

DS-
Golden Sun: Dark Dawn
The World Ends With You
Hotel Dusk and Last Window
Infinite Space (must buy since it's so underrated!)
Dragon Quest 9
Phantasy Star Zero
Professor Layton series
Pokemon series

3DS- Since you already mention Animal Crossing: New Leaf, get Fire Emblem: Awakening. Yes I got nothing more to add on the 3DS because I had only bought it a month ago (I only bought it for Pokemon X) granted I will get more games later on.

Well, these are the games I really enjoy playing:

The world ends with you
Phoenix Wright: Ace attorney
Phoenix Wright: Ace attorney-Justice for all
Phoenix Wright: Ace attorney- Trials and tribulations
Miles Edgeworth: Ace attorney investigations
Resident Evil: Deadly silence
Castlevania: Portrait of ruin
Castlevania: Dawn of sorrow

3DS
Luigi's mansion 2
Resident Evil: Revelations
Resident Evil: Mercenaries
...I have just got the 3DS so I haven't got that many games for it, but I am planning to get Pokémon X, Phoenix Wright: Dual destinies, Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of time and Legend of Zelda: A link between two worlds. I an't wait to expand my 3DS library as it will be the main thing keeping me entertained during down time at work.

I'd have to echo those who suggested 999. It's the best story I've experienced in any medium. Just make sure you get the true ending. Look up how to do it if you have to.

Atelier Annie: Alchemist of Sera Island

Castlevania: Dawn of Sorrow, Order of Acclesia*, Portrait of Ruin

Dragon Quest 4, 5, and 6

Final Fantasy Tactics: A2

Ghost Trick*

Infinite Space

Kingdom Hearts 358/2 Days, and ReCoded

Luminous Arc 1+2

Magical Starsign

Shin Megami Tensei: Devil Survivor 1 Overclocked, and 2(don't remember if the rerelease on the 3DS was released outside Japan yet, but if it is, get that one)

Shin Megami Tensei: Strange Journey*

Pokempon Black/White, Black/White 2

Pokemon Conquest

Pokemon HeartGold/SoulSilver

Pokemon Mystery Dungeon: Explorers of Sky

Professor Layton and the Curious Village; and the Diabolical Box; and the Unwound Future*(Unwound Future gets an asterisk because of dem feels) Haven't played the others yet, but I'll recommend them as well: and the Last Specter; and the Miracle Mask; and the Azran Legacy

Radiant Historia*

Rune Factory 1, 2, 3, and 4.

Sands of Destruction

The Dark Spire

Asterisks are for those with extra special recommendations. Get them. Just do it.
