Sorry this is a bit off topic but whats the difference between a manga and an anime?
Manga is a graphic novel or comic. Anime is a cartoon.
I've heard some people calling books and pictures anime though. Are they simply just using the wrong term?

It's technically the wrong term, but it's mostly a preference thing.

Mahou Sensei Negima. Sure, it starts out not too well as a harem comedy (it's not bad, per se, but if I wanted a harem series I'd read Love Hina), but by Setsuna's introduction it kicks ass, and from what I know it gets even better (I'm actually not far past chapter 100).

Also, Black Cat is one of the unsung series of Shonen Jump. I'd also vouch for Yu Yu Hakusho as I recall liking it, but I'll have to read it again to confirm.

I don't believe it's in the same tone as FMA(haven't read it), but you should read Black Lagoon anyway. Because it's awesome.

Gantz sounds deliciously awesome, I'll look into it more. As for Negima, I have decided I'm avoiding ecchi because I do not enjoy the boy love.
Shonen-ai is boy love, as is Yaoi, although Yaoi is generally the sexually explicit version of it.
Ecchi:
The term ecchi is applied to anime or manga that has vague sexual content (such as skimpy clothing, partial or full nudity), but does not show sexual intercourse, making it the manga equivalent of a PG-13 rated movie.

Read or Die/Read or Dream. It's about special agents (one is a girl working for the British Library, the others are three sisters) who have the power to create anything lethal/defensive out of paper, including a harder-than-diamond blade or some weird but funky animals and other miscellaneous weapons.

It had it's own 3 episode OVA and 26 episode anime. A real underdog swept under the currents of more popular shows

Want something a bit dark then try Bokurano.

Want vaguely WAFFy and feelgood then try Usagi Drop.

Katekyo Hitman Reborn is an entertaining Fighting/Gag manga.

btw, Alpha1089, your avatar is friggin' hypnotic; *swish*swish*swish*

If you can stomach some serious gore, I highly recommend Gantz.

Not quite like FMA, but good regardless.

Also, one goes till the ending with its original creator's vision and the other... the other goes and runs out of money mid-way, create an alternate history with a crazy ass plot and finishes it with a gainax ending.

Aye, Gantz has a really terrible filler ending in the anime.

The manga however, IIRC, is still running it's course.
