Elfin Leid, Gantz, Berzerk, Death Note, Psyren, D. Grey Man, 7 Seeds, +C Sword and Cornett, Blue Dragon Ral Grado, Claymore, Hunter X Hunter, Immortal Regis, Needless, Parasyte, Shamo, Soul Eater, Vagabond, Zetman, 07 Ghost, Eden, Fate-Stay Night, Ubel Blatt, and XBlade.

All of there are mana I have finished, reading, or plan on reading. Some are exelent, others are just fun. For example Immortal Regis is short, and was good enough to make me wish there was more to read...

An anime is an animated (hense the name) cartoon that relies on a certain "type" of animation to convey its own story style, it can be dark, light, wacky, serious, etc.

A manga is basicly a jappanese comic book, however they are mostly read right to left rather then left to right. And just like "western comics" they can have vastly diffrent art styles as well as stories.

Hope that helps, but the best way to learn is actually watching some REAL anime or looking at a random manga at your local book store.

Shit....sorry this was a response to a previous question

None, go read a comic book like a real man.
Reading comics makes you manly?
Of course, having 100000000000 different stories each one contradicting one another for the course of 30 years. Thats MANLY reading.
...on the other hand, Watchmen is awesome, and I've heard good things about "Invinsible" or something like it, the superman but extremely violent comic dunno how its called but i know its something like that
edit: yup, its invisible apparently http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Invincible_%28comics%29

Mwahahawikipedia. As for your actual recommendations, I'll check them out, since I'm not too phased by gore. And have you read FMA or am I just a very naive child to think that there's no way in hell that it could be considered PG?
Well, let's take a look at FMA shortly shall we? sure there's the puss spewing organ pile sin against "God" that is Al and Ed's mother, but really look at how things are handled in that series. Do you ever really see the effect that such a thing has being done instantly? if there's a homunculus that is out slaughtering people in the face is it ever actually shown?

Now, more metaphorically, what's the general maturity level of the over arching storyline? how do Ed and AL react to things over all? what situations would you say they resemble? highschool, college and real life? or more middleschool seeming like most anime?

See, I call it PG because it's not very dark, it's almost afraid to go as dark as it alludes to being. It has the stuff of greatness, but like Monster Rancher long before it, it never really DOES much with it.

BAA does a LOT with the darkness it has in it. Hell, Desty Nova one of the most competant and brilliant mad scientists ever to be in a manga does more in a single volume of Last Order than most FMA or other villians do in an entire season. In ONE volume of Last order he's completely reconstructed the main char (who was tryign to kill him, and succeeded btw . . . but he's back now too, and I won't tell how) completely tore apart a city by proving the "citizenship" process was replacing the brain with a computerchip (by cutting several people's heads open on live tv to show the chip in them) trained his assistant to take his mantle up after he would once again die, GAVE the kid the keys to the most powerful robotics manufacturing plant on the PLANET, AND THEN not only set himself up with a trio of deadly androids that almost match the main char, but sets in motion a plan that has so far not even HALF finished itself in 13 volumes despite NOTHING going how he intended it to! THAT my friend is not PG.

You don't just hear that he's done these things, you SEE him do it. Yukito Kishiro does not shy away from showing you what happens when Desty Nova decides to cut a person's head open, Kishiro-san lets you WATCH. I'd love to see FMA pull that off. Hell, I'd love to see a LOT of anime actually cross that threshold. Stop toying with us! we're mature! we deserve to see what we KNOW is happening.

(I'm looking at YOU DBZ!)

Battle Angel Alita or Battle Angel Alita: Last Order. Similar tones what with the gloomy setting and all, and rather brilliant storytelling I have to say. A good bit more gorey than the PG rated FMA though, so if you have a weak stomach, I'd recomend actually staying away from it.
This man knows of what he speaks. It's the only manga I've ever read (recommended by someone I ment here) and it was incredible. If I ever have a daughter, I will name it Alita. It's almost like I'm scared to check out another one because there's no chance in hell it will ever live up to Battle Angel.
Bio-Mega.

Not the same man, but it's BRILLIANT. Just as gorey, and just as well knowledgeable about how to handle the gore. Also another manga that's not afraid to show the results of the deadly bouts and wars that are happening.

Not to mention the 8 foot tall talking Russian Bear . . . with a sniper rifle . . . and a dark past . . . I mean come on. Talking bear . . . with rifle . . . do yourself that favor.

And I think you might be on to something with naming your daughter Alita. But might I suggest using Alita's BIRTH name as her middle name? Alita Yhoko (your family name here) nice ring to it eh?

You've probably already looked at Bleach, One Piece and Naruto but I'll recommend them all the same, Negima is good as is History's Strongest Disciple Kenichi.
The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya is interesting

Love Hina is a good Harem and KissxSis is also good if you enjoy the ecchi side of things (with a bit of humour as well)

Black Lagoon is an amazing action manga along with Hellsing

If you can stomach some serious gore, I highly recommend Gantz.

Not quite like FMA, but good regardless.
I can stomach some serious gore -evil grin-. I'll check out a synopsis of Gantz.
Seriously! Ive read quite a few manga in my day haha XD but Gantz completely destroys every other manga I have read. The character development is A-mazing! and it just takes your breath away. Im gonna cry!! damn its so awesome I highly recommend it as well. and if you can take all the blood and guts its a really great read.
WHAT?! what character development?! where?! what the fuck did I miss in the effing manga?!
Last time I read it it was something like, Main character manly, Main character loves his girlfriend over j-pop (extremely hotly drawn btw) star, Main character dead, Main character double-revived. Main character evil twin sad to be fucking j-pop star.
Oh yeah, also, there is a gantz factory in germany... WHAT OMG NOOOOOOOOOOOO... wtf?!
Plot: absurd, Characters: absurd, Drawings: actually kind of cool, Fightscenes: too repetitive? I mean ever since the mission with the guys with the BFG, all missions were the same.
What's the point in the series anymore?
Save themselves=lose all memories, more than likely, die in the hand of the vampires who hunt the ET-killers.
Continue playing forever=die eventually in the hand of aliens while kind of trying to save the world, althought not actually saving it because you seem to be the reason they keep attacking (as in, you killed my niichan, YOU'LL DIE!!!)
Really, I stopped understanding the point to this manga a LONG time ago
Whoah watch out man your giving away spoilers seriously haha.
anyways. If you paid attention to Kurono as much as I did he transcends from being a selfish SOB into someone who cares for others its really quite beautiful IMO.
We see Katou from being too caring for others turn just a little bit more to the selfish side to find a balance. Its really everywhere in the beggining of the manga.
Towards the end its not so much about development anymore (cause they are already developed to where they need to be and its focusing on the story.
If your like me then your waiting each three weeks for the newest one to come out. When we get the story so rarely instead of all at once it kinda makes the story blurry which is why ive read over six times.
If you still think the plot and story has disappeared after re-reading it then that is your opinion.

Well...I'll give this Bio-Mega a shot. Is there anywhere I can find it on the web? I read Alita at Mangafox but I'm pretty sure I got a virus from that site.

It wasn't really the gore that made me love that story so much (though I do love it. Dude had an obsession with brains, didn't he?) It was the young, sweet but deadly female tragic hero that suckered me in. I actually cried at the end, and I can't think of another book that's done that. Movies, but not print.

I dunno about using Yhoko. I'm extremely white, as is my last name so it may look odd throwing all that Asian in there. Good thing I don't plan on ever breeding! :D
Well, I don't know about online, I read Bio-Mega from the stores. Just search for the title on whatever sites you normally use, it might already be there who knows?

and Desty Nova had an obsession with FLAN, not brains, the brain deal was that he had shown Tiphares about THEIR brains. Then again, he was rather keen on taking the dead, dying, and demented brains and making them into cyborgs to run experiments in "Karmatronics"

if you actually like quality mangas (ones that aren't Naruto and the like), I highly recomend Monster and (maybe if you're ok with violent and graphic mangas) Akumetsu. Monster is absolutely phenomenal, i've read a fair share of mangas and none have compared to that one yet, and Akumetsu is humorous in it's violence
(and if anyone suggested either of those, sorry for the spam)

Mangafox is a pain in the ass like that. They have probably the largest selection around, but they take crappy care of their pages, so all the ads will bombard you with trojans. A lot of manga sites are like that. Most of the smaller ones will have syndicated stuff that the larger sites are asked not to host, but will have pages made from hate and internet herpes.

I've always had good success with onemanga. Everything by that guy I linked to is made of concentrated awesome. I linked him because I confused Biomege with Bio Meat. Onemanga does have Bio Meat though.

If you have a security system tougher than a nun's chastity belt:

http://www.mangavolume.com/
http://manga.bleachexile.com/ They host Gantz here, but unless you know what you're doing, you're gonna catch something.
