Recommendation threads promote less discussion than vs. threads, so when OP could just as easily achieve his objective of finding some music by simply doing a quick search, I'm going to say it's a bit redundant, yes.
Here's one of the last threads on the topic, it's eight days old: http://www.escapistmagazine.com/forums/read/18.268452-Need-more-music#10281676 granted this one doesn't have the same preferences as OP

Bear in mind, I didn't really initially complain that the thread has been done before. I responded to OP's claim - when confronted with the fact that these threads are almost as common as anime recommendation threads - that his tastes were unique enough that just looking through one of the other threads wouldn't produce satisfactory results.

Also, usually when I see them they are asking for indie bands, most of the time it's just flat out metal.

And one more thing, are you saying there are people with special of unique taste? Get over yourself.
Nono, I'm not saying that. That's why, unless you're looking for something obscure or specific, it is preferable to just visit one of the older threads. Particularly since people post largely the same things regardless of OP's stated preferences.
Of course, I don't blame OP. The search bar isn't even mentioned in the new forum rules.

Recommendation threads are sort of unique when it comes to repeat threads. Even though most discussions have been done before, bringing up an old topic to be discussed anew can be interesting; however, when you're just asking for people to give you a list of music, there's no reason not to just consult one of the many many lists that are already out there instead.

I'll admit though. We haven't had that many recommendation threads lately. Even anime rec. threads. It looks like we might be beginning to get rid of them.

Edit: And referring to people as "kid" isn't normally the best way to go about if you want them to be nice to you.
Sorry, I mixed you up with Novs who was being a jerk. You don't say to someone "your tastes aren't special and unique" and "it's irrelevant what you say".

Anyway, I do agree that recommendation threads hardly promote discussion but I'll tell you what. Most threads I see hardly promote discussion. Hell! I've seen threads started by the mods that ask for single word answers. So I don't really believe it is that bad.

jubjubbb isn't wasting anyones time or wasting space, this is a very inocent thread.

Eh my definition of nice is different to others.. and I like how I was called an "Internet tough guy" or something because I said "Kid" I have honestly never heard that before, must be the elite cools who use it
Don't do this, it's not worth it. Just ignore it, all you'll start is a flame war and that gets threads locked and users in trouble.

Also, please use the quote button. It's on the bottom right of the comment you want to respond to.

Personally I go for symphonic metal, a style which people my age generally don't liten to but that i got into because i like both heavy metal and classical and was just a natural progression for me. searching symphonic metal will give you a lot of bands, usually from europe, but i have found a lot to be a little bit immature, or targeted towards a emo teenage audience.

so i am going to recomment the work of a woman named Tarja. she was a founding member of nightwiswh but was kicked out a number of years ago. she is a symphonic metal and classical artist with the most amazing voice and training outside opera. everything she sings has a point, and is great when you really think about it, but is done so well that it can be enjoyed on a purely surface level as well. My favourite at the moment is "In For A Kill". Rather heavy for her but not headbanging, concussion-inducing heavy. and you can understand her. well, as much as you can for a classically trained vocalist. but classical vocals are much easier to understand than opera.
That was very interesting, thanks for sharing that. Could you please recommend anything else similiar? The combination really works for me :)

May I suggest;

And honestly, I could keep linking bands I love for ages. Different genres too, if you wish.

Dude, how could you link Electric Six without linking their weirdest coolest song yet?
Damn that song is funky, but that clip is so. freakin'. creepy. Pure nightmare fuel. So why do I have to keep watching O_O

Fred Astaire or Frank Sinatra. Because those guys just have so much class it doesn't matter what you normally listen to, they are still the kings.

Alternatively, if you want something a little more experimental, then I would suggest Poe. She's just off the wall.

Ignore the actual video and just listen to the song.
Whaaaat, no mention of Dean Martin? The man who has brought us:
Son, I am disappoint!

Unfortunately for us hon, this is TARJA. NO ONE is like her. Only an inferior copy. But that vocals.

Well, like I said, a lot of symphonic metal has that emo quality about it, so searching symph metal bands on YouTube is probably the best way to go. Finding one you like at the moment really does seem to be determined by how much angst you can tolerate.

That said, I am going to recomment Nightwish, Tarja's former band. They sound totally different since they got rid of her and some say they're worse, but I think that's just because they hadn't gotten used to poor Anette's vocal style yet. But Tumos Halopainen is a magnificent writer and is bloody huge on the Continent. The last album was a bit depressive, but Tarja's booting out wasn't an amicable split by all accounts, and his work can be metaphorical in places and require a bit of decoding; all in all though, still bloody awesome. The fact that they're accompanied by a full orchestra and choir is an essential part of their sound and definitely adds to the film score quality of their work. Plus there's a new album coming out next year. Oh, and if your really good some of their songs can be danced to. In my style. Looking at my avatar pic should tell you which one that is. Oh, and they did the cover of "Phantom of the Opera" while Tarja was still with them, which is totally my favourite because marco's vocals add a new, much needed layer of menace to the phantom character. you know what, here's the link. I know it's old, but I don't care.

The other one i have sitting in my CD collection is Visions of Atlantis, bought during a very depressing stage of my life but also the first symph metal group i liked, and one i still listen to. not as much and fewer songs, again because of the angst, but still with good writing, quality vocals (especially on Trinity, the song Return to You is so good you want to cry, especially when you find out it was written in memory of the woman's dead neice who was killed by a drunk driver), and good classical accompanyment. i wouldn't recomment trying to sing along because the woman has such a high vocal range, but that's part of the fun for me.

The only other one i can list off the top of my head at the moment is Epica, but I've never liked the lead's vocal style, and the songs do seem much more immature than tarja or nightwish, but then it's up to you.

Happy Listening!!!

Hey this is my first thread :D Been looking for some bands to listen to, any recommendations?
I tend to listen to Black Sabbath, AC/DC, Judas Priest, Megadeth, Nirvana, The Beatles, Iron Maiden. The classic rock n roll/metal kind of thing
If you're really into the classic metal vibe, I would recommend The Sword. They seem heavily influenced by Sabbath

Another classic sounding band is Witchcraft, I swear they came straight out the 70's.

Finally there's Mastodon, particularly their Crack The Skye album, because it's just an incredible blend of metal and prog.

This. Symphonic metal is my favourite form of music. As mythlover20 says, most are from Europe and many are connected in some way. Some good samples are :

Nightwish - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=N1VnZDQSNao
Epica - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UAlRf9qf9d0
Within Temptation - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PX27gXHai6U
Symphony X - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Pdk-Codp7zc
After Forever - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wY36GcCyP3s

The first ever symphonic metal band I listened to was the almighty Therion, they have been around forever. This is what they can do to an ABBA song... bloody remarkable!!

May I suggest you go suck a lemmon. Seriously, just because you think they're generic doesn't mean you can spit shit at someone with a different opinion.

You can just stop wasting everyones time and just recommend something you know.
I never spat at his opinion, i recommended 75 different classic metal bands, a genre he said he was interested in, and really, "everyone's" time? that post would at most take someone 2 minutes to read and is rather easy to just scroll past.
