I've never played any point-and-click adventure games. They're a little before my time; I didn't start "gaming" until the very late 90's/early 2000's.
Recently, I watched Leisure Suit Larry and Space Quest IV on Steam Train, and they looked like a hoot and a half. I'd like to give the genre a go, but I don't know where to begin.
So, what do you guys recommend I start with? I'd prefer something that isn't too serious, and not impossible to figure out. Bonus points if it's less than $10.
Ok, go with The Secret of Monkey Island and it's continuation Monkey Island 2: LeChuck's Revenge. They're both pirate-comedies (none of that Pirates of the Caribbean non-sense), you take role of young "Guybrush Threepwood, mighty pirate!", who's actually only a poser who desperately wants to be a pirate, but is evidently lacking of any piracy skills. Basically you end up embarking on a mission to save Governor Elaine, love of your life, and a true badass (unlike you), from the zombie-pirate LeChuck, thus proving your worth as a pirate. This is a classic of the genre by Lucas Arts and both received recent remakes, where they only added HD graphics (used to be pixels...) and dubbing but everything else, and I repeat, everything, remains the same, you can even change from one version to the other with the touch of a button (yep, you can go from HD, to the old Dos version in an instant), it's available for PC, Mac, X360, PS3, iPad, iPhone, maybe even Nintendo but I don't know.
Then I'd try to find an emulator for SCUMM or something, and play on a PC the original Sam & Max (I think the whole title was "Sam & Max cross the USA" or something); where you take the role of both private detectives, a dog and a fucking mad rabbit; hilarious gaming as well.
Following the same path, try to find The Curse of Monkey Island (Win95 I think) and Escape from Monkey Island (PC and PS2, as far as I know). More recently, you have pretty good adventures (not as good as the original ones though) from both Monkey Island and Sam & Max, THESE ONES are from TellTale Games, so you can find them in their website as well as other platforms, depending on the game.
Full Throttle is another classic, but it'll also require an SCUMM emulator or something, it's also more serious than the games I mentioned, but I'd say it's still safely inside a dark-humor genre.
Everyone keeps telling me about DIG and Day of the Tentacle, but I never got a chance to try them on, but I have a good feeling about both, so I'd give it a try as well.
If you have an iPad, they have quite a library in the genre, ranging from comedy to more serious themes, biut it's hard to pick the good ones from the plain copycats...
Edit: Telltale is focusing on point & click, from there, other than the ones I already commented, I'd say The Walking Dead was great, and The Wolf Among Us (based on Vertigo's Fables) has been wonderful so far; however they're both very serious, and have a much stronger focus on "creating your own story based on your personal decisions" rather than those puzzles of old (like a rubber chicken with a pulley in the middle lol)
