Just a heads up to the OP, Broken Sword just got the humble bundle treatment, but unfortunately it's the director's cut version.
Do with this information as you will.

Broken Sword: Shadow of The Templars - Carmen San Diego meets Scooby Doo. Need I say more?. Okay, it's very colorful, has a lot of fun characters, a pretty decent storyline (maybe better than most movies on theatres right now) and the chance to travel around the world, without painful stereotypes! (well, maybe one or two...).

The Longest Journey is by far the best point and click adventure game I have ever played, and I've played a lot of them. The sequel, Dreamfall, is good too but I've never played an adventure game that can hold a candle to The Longest Journey

Because I see already some very good and classic titles that you should check out, I will say to check out something different:

This game follow the classic old text adventure gameplay, which mean you much type the actions you want to do to play the game. However even I said that, the developers [two brothers only I think] do a very solid job to put some visuals and have some background sounds to create a perfect atmophare for the game.

I had plans to play this game, because I played the old version of the second game of the series.
Is there a problem with the remake?

It doesn't seem to be fully finished yet, but there's a little Adventure game on Kickstarter by the name of "The Last Door [http://www.kickstarter.com/projects/1042570429/the-last-door-episodic-horror-adventure?ref=live]" that you can try out for free.

I can't believe Primordia hasn't been mentioned yet. Released in 2012 by Wadjet Eye Games, it's a fantastic point-and-click. In particular the art direction and music make it a standout experience, but be warned, there are multiple endings, so be thorough in your collecting and decision-making throughout the game. The puzzles are excellent, but I don't want to spoil anything for you! It's evocative of many older games like Beneath a Steel Sky.

Honestly, more people need to play this game. It's worth the $10, get it on Steam.
To be fair, I find it a little "uncolorful" and very short.
Yes, I know, it MUST be uncolorful, but at some point I get tired of the brown/grey colors and rusted areas of the game....
And even it have multiple endings, it is very easy to earn them, except maybe one if I remember right.

However, I really like the main characters, the story and something else that I don't want to spoil it.
It deserve a solid 8/10 for sure.
If you see this game with a discount, yes, you should buy it.

It seems a few of you missed OP's original request qualifications.
Well, the OP said he/she prefer, not only unserious/funny/wacky adventure games.
But yes, I miss that, sorry for that OP.

So.......I have some suggestions then:

Well...sorry for saying this Monkey Island fans..........but I prefer this game than the Monkey Island games.
I played all the Monkey Island games [except the Third game], and I believe this game is more enjoyable and funnier.
Of course this is only my opinion, but I suggest at least to try the demo.

Then,this one:

http://www.listal.com/game/-pc-71511

It is a small adventure game with the name........."^_^"

No, you didn't read wrong. The name of the game is "^_^"

That how awesome and hilarious the game is ^_^

Finally,this little unknown gem:

Dark Scavenger

Do you see this guy above me? Yes, the green one. He is one of my favourite and funniest characters I ever seen recently.
Every time you have new materials to use to create a weapon [yes, it is a little RPG as well], he have every single time something funny to say to you.

Falsen....I love you too.

While Myst and it's sequels are good game I would strongly caution against them as an introduction to the genre, they tend to just kind of dump you into this world without a clear objective from the get go and you can get confused and overwhelmed very easily just trying to find out what it is you're supposed to do, and that's not to mention actually doing it.

They tend to be very puzzle driven games that are much heavier on the exploration and problem solving than some of the others mentioned.

For Humor and Accessibility go with Secret of Monkey Island, Discworld 1 & 2, Blazing Dragons for PSX if you can find it, Broken Sword, Deponia, and Grim Fandango.

You can give the TellTale games a try but the newer ones tend to be a little shallow on the puzzle solving compared to older games.

King's Quest, Space Quest, Leisure Suit Larry, and the other Sierra titles will give you a bit more of a challenge but not quite as steep as the Cyan (Myst) games will.

Well, the thing with the remake is that they cut out all clickables that were not absolutely necessary from continuing the game. The originals had tons of these things, where you could find out about stuff that wasn't connected to solving the current puzzle. It gave the game much of it's charm hearing the protagonist's witty comments about pretty much everything. And now getting past certain points gets much quicker as there are a lot less possibilities.
So don't expect any goats talking because you have 'em lucky coal in the new versions.

I've never played any point-and-click adventure games. They're a little before my time; I didn't start "gaming" until the very late 90's/early 2000's.

Recently, I watched Leisure Suit Larry and Space Quest IV on Steam Train, and they looked like a hoot and a half. I'd like to give the genre a go, but I don't know where to begin.

So, what do you guys recommend I start with? I'd prefer something that isn't too serious, and not impossible to figure out. Bonus points if it's less than $10.
Ok, go with The Secret of Monkey Island and it's continuation Monkey Island 2: LeChuck's Revenge. They're both pirate-comedies (none of that Pirates of the Caribbean non-sense), you take role of young "Guybrush Threepwood, mighty pirate!", who's actually only a poser who desperately wants to be a pirate, but is evidently lacking of any piracy skills. Basically you end up embarking on a mission to save Governor Elaine, love of your life, and a true badass (unlike you), from the zombie-pirate LeChuck, thus proving your worth as a pirate. This is a classic of the genre by Lucas Arts and both received recent remakes, where they only added HD graphics (used to be pixels...) and dubbing but everything else, and I repeat, everything, remains the same, you can even change from one version to the other with the touch of a button (yep, you can go from HD, to the old Dos version in an instant), it's available for PC, Mac, X360, PS3, iPad, iPhone, maybe even Nintendo but I don't know.

Then I'd try to find an emulator for SCUMM or something, and play on a PC the original Sam & Max (I think the whole title was "Sam & Max cross the USA" or something); where you take the role of both private detectives, a dog and a fucking mad rabbit; hilarious gaming as well.

Following the same path, try to find The Curse of Monkey Island (Win95 I think) and Escape from Monkey Island (PC and PS2, as far as I know). More recently, you have pretty good adventures (not as good as the original ones though) from both Monkey Island and Sam & Max, THESE ONES are from TellTale Games, so you can find them in their website as well as other platforms, depending on the game.

Full Throttle is another classic, but it'll also require an SCUMM emulator or something, it's also more serious than the games I mentioned, but I'd say it's still safely inside a dark-humor genre.

Everyone keeps telling me about DIG and Day of the Tentacle, but I never got a chance to try them on, but I have a good feeling about both, so I'd give it a try as well.

If you have an iPad, they have quite a library in the genre, ranging from comedy to more serious themes, biut it's hard to pick the good ones from the plain copycats...

Edit: Telltale is focusing on point & click, from there, other than the ones I already commented, I'd say The Walking Dead was great, and The Wolf Among Us (based on Vertigo's Fables) has been wonderful so far; however they're both very serious, and have a much stronger focus on "creating your own story based on your personal decisions" rather than those puzzles of old (like a rubber chicken with a pulley in the middle lol)

The 3rd game is, IMHO, by far and away the best. they all have their charm and magic, but the 3rd game is where it all comes together the best for me. So I'd definitely suggest giving it a try.
But I have so many other games to play :(
I had plans to play it, but it is from the last games I will touch.

What have you done?!?! :p

I'll state my fave point and clicks (some of which have been stated), in order:

1) The Longest Journey * (best story, IMO)

2) The Dig * (Spielberg and Lucas teamed up on this project, and it was actually good)

3) Full Throttle (hilarious adventure story)

4) Memento Mori

5) Culpa Innata (though it is flawed)

6) Dark Eye - Chains of Satinav

Kings Quest and Shadows of Darkness were also good, but I can't go back to some of those graphics unless I am in the mood.

Last summer, I went to Target and bought a WHOLE bunch of adventure game collections for cheap. Like...20 bucks got me over 10 games. My backlog is so bad, I haven't even touched a single one, lol.

I'm tired of zombies, but I might give Telltales' "Walking Dead" a try, I definitely want to play "Wolf Among Us."
---------------

Interactive Video Puzzlers (similar to point and click)...

1) Hell: A Cyberpunk Thriller

2) Burn Cycle

3) Daedalus Encounter

Oddly enough, all of these were 3DO releases (as well as PC)

----------------

Similar in Spirit...

1) Fear Effect 1 & 2

2) any game by Quantic Dream (Indigo Prophecy, Heavy Rain, Beyond 2 Souls), except Omikron (decent open world sci-fi)

----------------

Some of the Japanese "visual novels" capture that old adventure game feel, while others are pure cheesecake (and less interesting, IMO...I know, it's sad that I demand story of such things, but there you go...).
