Sorry, I didn't mean to contribute to any potential derailment [frownyface]

I really tried to think of something, but sci-fi series is sort of hard in the TV deptartment. Firefly is a no-brainer, but it's already been mentioned from post one. I even tried reaching back into my youth, but all I could come up with was the original Battlestar, and Buck Rogers. Everything else I've got falls into either obscure or imbecilic, like Voyages or the original V series (to be avoided at all costs!). Twilight Zone? I dunno, historically, TV sci-fi is usually really good or really terrible, and even then being good (like Firefly) doesn't necessarily mean it'll be around long. Sorry, but I'm drawing blanks here.

I don't really remember the original V series all that well, but what I have seen from the 2009 remake so far looks quite promising. Give it a try ven though it may not be the sci-fi the OP is looking for.

I wouldn't exactly recommend FarScape. It has its moments, but.. it's just a little too weird and pointless at times.

Back when I was little my parents brought me up on a lot of Doctor Who, the classic kind which was good. You want to skirt around that and considering I've seen what they've done I can't blame you. Red Dwarf and Babylon 5 were very good, and wasn't all "Humans are good and alien races are all corrupt!". I also suggest not going further then just the Babylon 5 series. The follow up to it was like a fanfic gone horribly wrong. As for Red Dwarf, it's funny, it's crazy, and entertaining. For some clearing up on Icehearted's reply, The Twilight Zone was good, trust me. It was amazingly well written compared to a lot of TV sci-fi's. Not all alien's were evil, you had to be smart to get certain ideas, and even then at times it taught you a lesson. Just steer clear of the revival Twilight Zone episodes, they are poorly written and just sad. Threshold is another good series to look into although it sadly only lasted one season. It wasn't all action and had a good bit of plot and strange creepy dreams that attempted to deliver a message to the character and the viewer. Another good one is Fringe, but that's because of it's humor more than anything else. That's about everything I can come up with, I hope that helps.

Maybe Fringe? I haven't ever watched it but it's apparently supposed to be pretty decent, you know aside from Joshua Jackson being in it and all.

From someone who didn't like any of the Stargate series' (but thought the movie was pretty good):
Babylon 5

and

Farscape. To be fair, Farscape has a weird bell curve. Season one is awesome, season two is meh, season three is kinda dumb, and then season four is good, creeping towards awesome. I didn't get a chance to watch season 5.

Red Dwarf, and Sliders if they haven't been mentioned already. A movie or two to help with being enjoyable is Gallica and Back to the Future Trilogy. 7 Days is a fun series (problem of the week fixed by going back 7 days) even though it is formulaic is entertaining like Quantum Leap is. Babylon 5 is the one my dad swears by as the great one, but then again the story becomes to combiluted for me to figure what is what. Life On Mars is one you will probably enjoy since it is the FLCL of American sci-fi.

Actually, I did, but I jumped in in the middle, and that's probably why I didn't get into it.
Also, everyone keeps telling me how AMAZING it is and that was a huge mistake - I watched Twilight 'cause I knew it would suck and be hilarious, but when someone tells me something is incredible and awesome, I doubt the veracity of their claims.

You doubt the veracity of their claims yet you do nothing to judge for yourself (jumping into the middle of a series like Galactica doesn't count, that's like throwing a baby into the deep end of the pool. You're only going to struggle and drown amidst the soup that is the storyline). Still I am not one to talk, I find no solace in Stargate despite it's many favorable reviews. It has charm but it's got no soul.

Don't worry about it!. Excluding the most obvious I get to weed out some of the buried gems.

Fringe sounds really good and I might get into it. I have watched one episode of Babylon 5 before but a box set is hard to come by, at least it is where I live. Might check on Amazon.

Thanks for all the suggestions anyway guys and gals.

I prefer this one:
Is it just me, or did this thread suddenly fill with BSG fanboys/fangirls? *pets his Cylon figurine* It's just that I have to go to work in a couple o' minutes, or else I'd watch an episode right now.

Really? If you ask me, it actually got better and better the more you got to know the characters.

It's more like, I don't want to be disappointed.

But it's been SO HYPED and my tastes are (apparently) so different from most people's, it's likely it won't live up to the hype.

Of course, if it does, then holy shit.
O we're just fanboys, don't pay too much attention to our frantic praising. Just see for yourself.

I love BSG, Firefle and Dr.Who, the others are 'meh' and I was wondering if there was any other sci-fi that I could sink my teeth into?.

Edit: and not Stargate

I know what you mean. For ages near where I lived there was this generic cafe that served bland coffee and grey coloured food. People (me included) ate there nonetheless because it was the closest to all the main businesses and had plenty of parking. However, some time back a new outlet from Portugal opened and there was all this hype about it. Great food, great service, the best coffee around...

...

it turned out to be shit when I tried it!.

Not really, just common sense when making a thread titled "Recommend some Sci-fi shows" besides, I've seen them all. No point in people telling me what I already know.

Edit- Sorry for the double post.

Anyone mentioned Cowboy Bebop yet?

It's pretty much a japanese Firefly (only that...you know, it came first)
