Baccano:

A anime about a bunch of mafiosi and some gangsters who have aquired different forms of immortality. The characters all are a bit crazy and the show has a great sense of humor.

Gankuutsuou (The count of Monte Christo)

The old story about the count of monte christo, but set in a futuristic world and with a really unique art style.

I like Mentanei Conan, but I'm a sucker for murder mysteries.
I like that one, but its been awhile since it has advanced the main plot, and even then the main plot doesnt seem to have advanced much.
I agree and that is definately a problem.

It has been going since 1996 and is still not showing no signs of coming to a conclusion.

Can't help you dude. I have completely different tastes from you, going mostly for obscure & classics & avoiding anything that's ever been shown on cable TV outside of On-Demand & Anime Network.

All I can suggest is looking for posts of people who tell you they have similar taste, & then watch trailers of their suggestions on youtube.

What is the manga at like 700 somethin *actually checks* well fuck me 740 right on the dot.

I've noticed this is becoming a trend now *glares at One Piece*, at least Full Metal Alchemist has finally concluded right?

It really depends on what you're looking for in your Anime.

I'm a big fan of Evangelion, but my buddy doesn't really like it. I could probably get him into the new remake of the series, which has much better pacing than the original. I didn't get into Evangelion when I first saw it.

I'm a big fan of the series Martian Successor Nadesico. It's a parody of pretty much every other Giant Mecha anime. A lot of the characters are completely off the wall with the way they act, and some of their actions are completely over the top with their reasoning.

I also just finished watching the end of the Slayers series. It's a very amusing spinoff of fantasy novels and series. It has a lot of jokes(some are horrible, some are awesome), and yet still manages to tell an amazing story of how a small group of people can change the world.

Elfin Lied FTW.
Also FTW Cowboy Bebop (if you haven't seen this you can't even call yourself an anime fan) and Samurai Champloo.

You might wanna try reading the Neon Genesis: Evangelion manga. I remember that's what really got me into it, seeing it at the public library. Unfortunately they only had #1 and #2, so that's all I had until I found places to watch and buy episodes.

I recommend Higurashi no Naku Koro ni and Higurashi no Naku Koro ni Kai.
And when you're finished with those and enjoyed them, watch Umineko no Naku Koro ni.

I also recommend Hellsing if you haven't seen it (Perferably Hellsing Ultimate, but maybe you should watch the original first).

Also, yes, watch more Elfen Lied.

Ok, I'm going to recommend Elfen Lied because I personally thought it was one of the greatest things ever, and because it's short so, even if you're not really into it, you haven't just wasted hours of your life. Also, Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann was pretty great from what I remember.

And as someone who finished watching Higurashi no Naku Koro Ni like, a month ago, I'm going to say that you should watch it if you're into complete mindfuck, murder, and moments of genuine hilarity.

Uhhh...I'm trying to think of something else...Neon Genesis: Evangelion was pretty great, but it might take a bit to pick up, as a lot of the more intense stuff happens in the later episodes (as one might imagine).

FULL METAL ALCHEMIST: BROTHERHOOD
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fullmetal_Alchemist
If you liked the original anime, you will definitly like this one. It re-tells the story but follows the manga plot pretty much word for word. In the end, it feels like a much tighter and well told story than the first FMA series.
4.5 stars

THE MELANCHOLY OF HARUHI SUZUMIYA
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Haruhi_Suzumiya
This one, in one word, is amazing. Anyone who enjoys anime (and those who dont) will love this series. Mixing school life, action, adventure, aliens, narrative, and humor into a perfect 13 episode series.
If you are game, check out season 2. BUT BE PREPARED.
There is also a movie in development!!
5 stars

HIGURASHI NO NAKU KORO NI (WHEN THE HIGURASHI CRY)
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Higurashi_When_They_Cry
Higurashi is one that tells it's story in a unique episodic way. It CAN be confusing at first, but bare with it. They characters and story of this series, and ESPECIALLY its sequals are incredibly well told.
I do caution though that this one is a very mature and blood filled anime. Its themes centralise on death and murder.
4 stars

K-ON
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/K-On!
With K-On you can sit back and relax. The show has very little plot, but is well written and the characters develop well. Light hearted and full of humor. The second series is currently airing.

Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann - If your someone looking for a combination of Epic and Badass and all Action-like Anime this is for you - Its all about going beyond the impossible using your sheer willpower to the maximum. Perhaps my favorite Anime, and I don't even like Mechas that much.

Elfen Lied - Its not particularly bad. Give it a chance if you got some time to kill. Some people do play favorites with this Anime but I personally disliked it. Oh and its as bloody and sad as freaking hell.

Case Closed (Detective Conan) - If your a sucker for Detective Animes your going to like this one. Well, Probably. Personally found it to be pretty good. By the way, it has 580 episodes and its ongoing since 1996.

Death Note - I loved it. An intellectual student is given a "special power" to kill others, which he uses to do what he thinks is right, and clear the world of what he sees as wrong. He unds up fighting another mastermind

Code Geass - I loved it. An intellectual student is given a "special power" to...hold on, I saw this before somewhere...Anyway, he has a power to forcefully control others with his vision. Leading a rebellion trough his new power, his intellect and his strong leadership, he fights against a intire empire for what he believes to be right. Has a lot of Mecha in it.

Everyone else has already mentioned Everything i love so I'll try to throw you a curveball.

Detroit Metal City- It's a 15 min long per episode anime about a death metal band as it rises to popularity in Japan. It's a bit ridiculous but it's awesome in it's own way. The music's great if you like metal.

Awesome! I am a huge metal fan and I also like J-Metal (like Maximum the Hormone; of deathnote fame) so I'll definitely give that a go.
