Metal is a very diverse genre, what other sort of music do you enjoy? This will probably indicate whether you're into industrial, thrash, et cetera.

I'd recommend you start off with Metallica & Megadeth, they're two of the 'big four' of thrash metal. Their stuff isn't that far off from rock and is pretty influential.

Super badass banshee screams gooooooooooooo!

Deadly Sinnahs!

3IOB is still my favourite band ever several years on from when I first heard them. You know I like the one Cradle of Filth song that was featured in Brutal Legend, bizzarely I only like that one song only out of their entire collection.

I really like the sort of narrative intro better than the rest of the song. It helps that I watching the Higurashi anime at the time and the first verse gives me heavy Higurashi vibes.

Plus a Midnight Mare that tramples dreams sounds fucking awesome.

I know fuck all about metal cause I mainly listen to "girly" music but I'll give it my best shot...

Any of those tickle your fancy. I'm not totally sure whether Bing Bjamin is grunge or metal but I tried...

Needs moar Iron Maiden (most things do), that or Black Sabbath or Judas Priest - the definitive heavy metal bands.

Iron Maiden - Somewhere In Time Album
Judas Priest- Painkiller Album
Black Sabbath - Black Sabbath Album

Other than that, maybe the Rust in peace album by megadeth or I'm really enjoying the tales along this road album by korpiklaani

Well here's a few of my faves-
Megadeth - Take No Prisoners
Pantera - well, pretty much almost any Pantera song, one of my faves is Message In Blood

Probably less accessible-
DevilDriver - Burning Sermon

Try listening to Heidevolk, which is a Dutch folk metal band. I don't know whether you'll like it, but I think most of it sounds pretty good.

Well, I haven't seen these guys mentioned yet so...

if you're into progressive death metal, Omnium Gatherum. Their songs are very melodic, with low, growling vocals. Never was a fan of the screamers. They also use clean vocals every now & again.

Also, I second Devin Townsend. If for nothing more than the fact he went from the musical stylings of SYL to Ghost. Not many musicians could make that transition gracefully. He's great.

..and my favorite song of theirs.

If you like more melodic stuff with lyrics you can actually hear and understand then I must recommend you try listening to some symphonic/progressive/power metal.

Some suggestions:

Sonata Arctica:

My Selene:

White Pearl Black Oceans:

Nightwish:

Escapist:

Dream Theater:
On the Backs of Angels:

There's lots more I could refer you to if you like any of those, just send me a pm or reply here and I'd be glad to share more :)

Anthrax' Worship Music is currently my most listened to metal album; it can get a bit repetitive but definitely give I'm Alive or In The End a listen.

What kind of music do you usually listen to? That might help us to land something a bit more in your ballpark.
a while back i was given a guns and roees cd and liked a few songs. i synced my i touch to my laptop and they were not transferred. i barley listened to to them since.
from then on i mainly have listened miracle of sound(none of my favorites are metal but i like one or two of his metal songs). and some video game music mainly from okami and bastion.

Aside: Just quoting because I took about 15min to write this and I think it's not a bad "Intro to Metal" tutorial (if I do say so myself).

OT: You have to ease yourself into it. Start of with heavy metal, then move up in the following order until you find stuff you like. Below is a list of subgenres that provide a decent understanding of metal, ranked in order of how heavy they are. Included are some examples and their best albums.

Punk Rock & Post-hardcore (not metal but a good starting point for aggressive guitar)
Rise Against (The Sufferer and the Witness)

Experimental
Apocalyptica (Inquisition Symphony; 7th Symphony)
Van Canto (I don't know any of their albums, this one's just good for a laugh)

Heavy Metal
Iron Maiden (Number of the Beast)
AC/DC (Back in Black)
Black Sabbath (Master of Reality)

Thrash Metal
Metallica (The Black Album; Master of Puppets)
Megadeath (Risk: Japanese Edition {comes with Duke Nukem Theme})

Nu-metal & Power Metal & Symphonic Metal
Nu-metal Examples: Avenged Sevenfold (Avenged Sevenfold; The City of Evil)
Power Metal Example: Kamelot (The Fourth Legacy)
Symphonic Metal Example: Epica (Design Your Universe)

Metalcore
Trivium (Ascendancy; In Waves)
All That Remains (The Fall of Ideals)
As I Lay Dying (An Ocean Between Us)

Deathcore
Suicide Silence (The Black Crown)

Death Metal
I don't know any death metal...

I'm a big fan of Sabaton, which is odd because I'm not big on metal, but I think it is the historical nature of their music that I really enjoy.

I second Sabaton. One of my favourie bands. I have seen them 3 times including their first headlined american show. I even managed to get my dad and girlfriend into the band. They are an amazing metal band, an even more impressive live band. They are one of the hardest working bands out there and have the best appreciation for their fans. I have never seen a band care so much about giving back to their fans.

P.S. most of what the previous person posted is their new stuff. Also check out primo victoria, into the fire, metal machine, attero dominatos, etc.

Some bands I really like are Edguy, Avantasia (these two have the same singer), Sonata Arctica, Van Canto, and Nightwish.

These threads are always a little tough for me. I guess I'll just post some good stuff I've been listening to.
