only stupid people are turned off from an entire genre over one really bad song(i am not stupid).
also next time if want to purposely give some one a potently bad song don't tell them it is terrible and let them find that out for them self. by telling them that they may refuse to listen to it like i am.
i also advise if all you got to post in a metal thread a comment saying metal suck don't comment at all and ignore the thread. because it puts you on the same level of the pathetic people who complain about Justin bieber in the comments section of a Justin bieber video.
i have listen to some metal but i have yet to find one i liked. for the most part i just have a meh [http://raptorsrepublic.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/08/meh_cat.jpg] reaction to the metal i heard so far
So I just posted a plethora of the best metal I could figure. It's really either metal or jazz with me; I don't listen to much of any other type of music except for J.S.Bach.
If I have helped just one person find something they like, then my job is done.
Damnit, just stumbled on these guys right now and I like them. Must get off internet
It took me ages till I got into listening to heavy metal, and I stay well clear of most of the death metal and such. Believe it or not I got into metal from the 1st Matrix album which featured Rammstein's Du Hast. From that moment I started looking into the genre. For the most part though this lead me away from metal and towards the hard rock alternate music groups like Alice & Chains, Soundgarden/Audioslave, Garbage, Tool and such. Nowadays I keep an ear open to all musical genres even hip hop and country, all because I discovered a metal band I liked.
Anyhows some Metal Bands that I like the sound of are: Rammstein, Black Sabbath, Motorhead, Gun's & Roses, Metallica, AC/DC (However in Australia I believe we lock you up if don't like listening to akka dakka so this ones a given)and Rage against the Machine (Not sure if you could class them as heavy metal but I'll chuck 'em in anyhows).
Having seen them last night, and they were PHENOMENAL, I'm recommending Nightwish all the way. A lot of their stuff varies on each album, so my choice tracks are:
Wayfarer (Century Child)
The Siren (Once)
Dark Chest of Wonders (Once)
Gethsemane (Oceanborn)
Nemo (Once)
Storytime (Imaginaerum)
Master Passion Greed (Dark Passion Play)
Bye Bye Beautiful (Dark Passion Play)
Wish I Had An Angel (Once)
Ghost River (Imaginaerum)
Ever Dream (Century Child)
Last Ride Of The Day (Imaginaerum)
Other bands I could recommend are PAIN (Swedish Techno Metal), Chimaira (Early Deathcore, I think), As I Lay Dying (Thrash Metal with screaming) and Dethklok (Brutal as fuck Fictional Band..also, check out Metalocalypse, the series they're based on)
If you have the patience for it I have linked a full album below (The Mantle, which is stellar) if not, I would at the very least recommend 4-5 minutes to get a feel for it.
Some great melodic death metal in the form of Be'lakor, definitely worth a listen.
If the instrumental intro to this song by Ne Obliviscaris doesn't make you cream your pants then you are truly lost. The whole Portal of I is a great and different album.
Some slower (too slow for most I have gathered) metal, Nautical Funeral Doom as they call themselves. Hilarious genre title but great music. The growls aren't the easiest to get used to though.
Amazing prog metal, Dwellings is a must listen.
Dark Tranquillity, surprised it hasn't gotten a mention yet. My favorite band from the gothenburg scene and one of my favorites overall as well.
One quite interesting bit of information is that Mikael Stanne (vocalist for DT) was the vocalist for In Flames on Lunar Strain while Anders Fridén (you guessed it, vocalist for In Flames) was the vocalist for DT on Skydancer.
Dissection, definitely one of my favorite bands out of the second wave of black metal.
A newer type of black, the whole of Population Control is pretty great.
Sonata Arctica is a great place to start, was definitely my first musical love. Almost 10 years ago now but I can still take them for a spin every now and then.
Honorable mentions to many more, some already mentioned.
EDIT: Since metal often has so much sound good headphones or sound equipment is HIGHLY recommended to pick up all nuances. Otherwise it might just end up as noise.

Thank you! I was listening to this band some a while back, and thought they were awesome, but then I sort of forgot about them. Thank you for reminding me that these awesome guys exist.
I'll definitely have to check out some of those other bands you listed, too.
I meant more what do you listen to outside of metal, but okay, a lot of people have made some good suggestions, so I guess I'd just echo the sentiment that it'd be best to start you off with some more traditional/powery-ish sounding bands:
Not sure what you're what your position is on Extreme and or Progressive/Experimental Metal or harsher vocal styles, but I could make some reccomendations in that avenue as well if you want.
Surely you aren't implying what I think you are implying here.
OT: Devin Townsend! SERIOUSLY! Go check his shit out, ignore everything else. Just ANY album he's ever made, either with Strapping Young Lad or under his own name. EVERYTHING is good.
