I love, love, love horror flicks - in any language. The best ones are the films that build suspense and use subtle scares, not jump-at-you gore-fests. I find those stick with me the longest. But I am running really low on new flicks to watch. Can anybody recommend titles? Just FYI, some of my favorites are the South Korean film A Tale of Two Sisters (Janghwa, Hongryeon), the Thai film Shutter, Ju-On, Paranormal Activity, Alien & Aliens, the 1959 version of House on Haunted Hill, and Silence of the Lambs.

Try:
"The Birds" by Alfred Hitchcock.
"The Shining" by Stanley Kubrick.

Theres others but try those first, very good movies/novels aswell.

You win, this thread is over.

OP:John Carpenter's 'The Thing' is a rare pyschological horror movie that has aliens.

How was that psychological? It was creepy, Lovecraftian, and sort of disturbing at times, but I see no psychological horror there.

I would recommend Penny Dreadful. It's the only decent slasher flick I've ever seen. The killer just spends the entire movie playing mind games with her.

But then, I'm not much of a horror movie buff, so feel free to ignore me.

My God My victory is short lived. The Thing was by far one of the biggest mind fuck movies I ever watched as a young boy. The whole no one is who the say they are theme struck me like a ton of bricks that movie had epic suspense!
And a very perplexing ending if I may say.

The whole 'Who is the Thing? Is it me? Is it you?'paranoia and the feeling of isolation in the arctic. For most of the movie you don't see much of the monster so it's based mostly on paranoia, and even when you do see the monster it's more human than creature (Excluding the ending where he goes bannanas).

Ah, ok. That makes sense, now that I think about it.

"The Last Broadcast". An independent horror film that saw a major theatrical release.
THIS is the movie that started the "Camcorder Horror" Trend (Blair Witch, REC, etc).

To date this is the only one that gets it right, IMHO. The best part? The whole thing is on YouTube! Enjoy!

Uh well theres also the "Sixth Sense" By M. Night Shamalaladingdong

Though most of his other films take a lot of flack (and often rightfully so) I would have trouble as a horror and suspense buff not recommending atleast a passing view to it.

Saw 1 and 2 in some respects. focusing that its more on the story and plot twists than just dark and screaming.

You can not go wrong with Session 9. I watch a lot of horror films (like, I have shelves full of my favorite horror films in my appartment), and this is one of the few films that I still consider scary. Check it out, because you will not regret it.

In the Mouth of Madness is an excellent one... Thinner to a lesser degree.

My suggestion isn't so much a psychological thriller as it is a mindfuck.
Neon Genesis The End of Evangelion

For me there can be no other option but Pet Sematary. As I said before this was the movie that actually traumatised me in my youth, destroyed me mentally and helped to completely eliminate my sense of fear. I'm serious it didn't just scare me, or even terrify me, it flat out destroyed me and now I can no longer feel fear.
So yeah, that's one I recommend if you think you can handle it.

Wait, was that the original or the remake? 'cos I've got the remake... I think it actually scared me when I first watched it a few years ago...

I haven't finished watching the series. but that alone is slight mind-fuck.

EDIT: Oh, and for my own suggestion, 'Event Horizon' scared the shit out of me when I first watched it.
